I'm speaking on a gui level, means that my Music directory is on my mac, my Movies directory is on my PC, my address book and calendar on Mac but my gaming is on PC. Using DAVE I make it so when I save into my Music directory it goes on the harddrive of my Mac in the Music directory and so on, the Home of one machine is the same then the other, actually some parts reside on one machine other parts on the other machine but wheter I'm on my PC or Mac it all look the same to me. Using VNC I have my Mac trough my PC and vice-versa so that I always have access to both machine software from any of them, excluding games of course.
Nothing big or unusual just something that requires a few reboot while configuring...
It is funny and somewhat interesting in its funnyness but this value is totally irrelevant, your Linux, configured the same way as my Linux won't have the same result because the user is different and a lot of the reboots one experiences is directly linked to the usage he makes of his computer. I like to fiddle in my machine, I'm learning trough curiosity, I have a lot more chance to crash, hang or whatever and have to reboot than someone who's running the same server day in day out.
My last Mac on osX has been maybe rebooted 4-5 time because of something else than upgrades in its 5 years usage. However, since I'm now trying to make it an extension of my PC by integrating both computer togheter via networking stuff like VNC, DAVE et al. so they look like one machine to me, I've been rebooting it alot...
Same machine, same OS, same user, different results...
So I guess what I'm asking is don't MOD someone up just because he pulls a half decent joke about Windows unstability and Linux stability, what he said simply is irrevelant.
I came to realize in life that there aren't any real Apple zealot, there are mostly people constantly feeling the need to defend themselves against anti-mac zealots, people who will say the wrongest of all thing covered in insult and assumption at the very mention of Apple or Mac. The mac basher crowd is so active one can become paranoid and start defending his choice anytime something could be said against the platform because they fear the basher and they love other consummers. Seeing that those consummers might end up with an inferior platform because they believed the anti-mac zealot claim the mac defender roam online publication in search of people like the parent of this post who probably got himself a huge rash when he read the word Apple on Slashdot, another news about Apple?? Insult immediatly followed: "It's true, Slashdot has turned into another Apple rumour site" hopping that by his comment Slashdot editors will cut back on Apple news, in fear of being labeled as Mac lovers, the communist equivalent of the web, Slashdot wouldn't want that he thinks.
Actually my friend just got a Mac, his first, and he actually likes the mac bashers. Thanks to them he is forced to learn about his computer because they constantly want him to look like a sub-tech with his Mac by asking rethorical questions and passing comments like the one in the parent, because he wants to answer those questions, because he wants to know if what they told him is true and he actually has been had and bought the wrong machine. Each and every time he comes back and laugh at all the bullshit he is told and feels good about himself, he finally understands computers...
Do you think those menus and song list, and reaction of the player to the button play being pressed is the inherent result of the look of your device (anything that has a triangle on it will make anything its stuck on "play"). Dude, your microwave has an OS, it's not Windows or Linux but it is an OS.
"and Quebec always voting in francophone Prime ministers"
Duh! We are francophone, and in case you forgot we have been forced into the country, don't you remember your history, the "Nuit des longs couteau" (night of long knives, litteraly)? Where Prime Minister Lévesques got tricked into the constitution, all the other province Prime Ministers after going to bed, waited a bit, got up and signed the constitution without m. Lévesque being there, since they managed to include in the constitution that only the majority had to sign, not everyone, Quebec was now part of Canada.
Keep that in mind when you wanna curse on us, we never have asked to be part of Canada, not this way anyway, but since our conditions were irirtating the Canadian racist fiber (a french culture??? Who want to deal with its cultural life by itself??? God forbid that, we will assimilate them!) we have been forced into it. In case you haven't noticed we are french speaking and if we are to be stuck in Canada we'd rather vote for our point of views. Read this carefully: We Will Never Be Assimilated. You guys want our money but not our culture, bad choice, as you will see. As of now we will create so much trouble in this country next time we try to get out you'll actually encourage us.
No sincerly, it is too much, cut a few frame from each animation and it become usable but as of now each single animation is too long, just watching the video was stressing me out. The wobble is neat, very neat, but realize you'll have to watch this animation each time you will manipulate the window or menu. Animation should be short, used for introduction or removal of an object, if you animation has a 1.5 sec. duration this is what it cuts on productivity and patience, I use an OS to work not to be impressed by the guy who wrote it. MacOSX animation for example are very short, the longest one is the Genie effect and it barely reach a second, the wobble in the video I just saw had a 2-3 sec duration, it was very annoying.
then again if my only complaint is with the animation duration it means those guys did a very good job!:))
well actually, I have another complaint: doesn't linux or BSD or anything that was used in the video has any screen capture tool cause the guy holding the camera was, I think, trying to be artsy and "cool" but I just wanted to punch him to unconsciousness.
Actually, call me nuts, but i DO notice a speed increase it's subtle but it's there, enough for me to have noticed it was faster before I read your post... again not by much it just feels snapier

And I would still be using winXP? How is the next level just a few tweaks? If I'm that good shouldn't you teach me really advanced stuff like how to use the serial interface to monitor my computer or access my hardware firmwares to modify them... shouldn't you teach me how to boot several system in one computer, depending on which "startup button" I have pressed (imagine an external keypad, each button labeled with a different OS it boots when pressed). I mean, what if I'm beyond swap file relocation, what if I'm truly advanced but don't have the money to learn computer engineering?
I mean, I have tried MIT online electrical engineering courses but I was lacking a tutor or someone to explain to me some of the concept shown there without explanation...
anyway you get it, this is just another winXP tweak guide, gazillion of them are on the net, none of them actually does something truly usefull..
Remember the old times when MS and Symantec et al. were spitting FUD and bullshit on the Mac so they could standardize on the OS that needed constant upgrading and that was so bad you knew there was business to be done there... the Mac market share are going up again, here they are, implying lies and BS again as ever.
We wanna look like the good guys so we'll tell you that Symantec has started releasing virii, ooops I meant someone is wrtting malware for the Mac, and that only the small number of you protected you, and we'll imply you switched because of style not functionnality, even if its the other way around.

America is changing, a lot and not for the best. At first I was mad at americans for letting their country and values drift like that, I was mad when I saw them use left to promote right, how many evil in this country are being perpetuated because of some holy or pseudo-moral reasons, I was mad at seeing them call who's good and who's evil on the planet when no country on earth come even close to them on bodycount.
But then I started to pity them cause I realized they just, as an average, don't have the right level of education and willpower to actually fight those abuse so all they can do is witness them and rant on them but they are forbid to act and actually just don't feel the need for it.
This is another step toward an accepted and democratized dictatorship, think of it, soon the US will be the only place on earth where people will elect their dictator... isn't democracy great!
There is a way we could attain democracy in communication, where every node is every home, but so that rich men stay rich, some will invoke the thousands of job losts that would happen if the industry would collapse. So as to preserve a few thousands job around the country we will make million pay every month of their life between 30-100$ per month, depending on their communication needs and means.
Business opportunity would arise and political democracy would reach a new level, I guess that is why we need those regulations...
this is not a flame but a real comment, all videos I watched of this gave me nausea, the idea that the background move when my mouse does is very disturbing and not a good idea to locate items on the screen since everything moves not just the foreground or background. Each graphical element is way too big and actually nulify the idea, if you wanted more space out of this realize you don't because every object on the screen is now bigger, turning them aside doesn't provide much more space than windowshading does (the ability on the mac to collapse a window into its title bar), actually it provide less space because of the drop shadow and extra thickness, plus, now, you have too read from up to down instead of left to right, basically it is less usefull and more clunky than windowshade, but since it is a feature of a software that runs on Linux people will go nuts over it and call it usefull 3D even if its nothing but glitz and wizzbang...
Actually, Looking glass is like when you give Windows a resolution the display can't handle, it just shows you part of your desktop and now you have to scroll the desktop to go to each corner, imagine this concept in 3D, you have Looking Glass...
How much work can you do on said platform in a given amount of time, period. If you are a writter, how many projects can produce on your computer in one day (3 pages of an essay, 5 of a fiction, one publicity, 10...). Do this on all platform, now you just measured productivity on each platform, all of them being unequal some type of work will make one platform seems more productive than the other.
My case is simple, MacOsX (I'm writting this off a PC, my PC, I don't do computer religion sry) is the most productive environment for me, all fields confounded. MacOsX is thought as an os you work with, not something that tries to please everyone, and it doesnt please everyone, and thats why its a productive environment, it cather to a crowd and do it very well. In terms of market share, as far as the consummer is concerned, less is more. Why do I own a PC then? Games... not really about productivity...
Example: even though there are countless amount of me too audio wares on the PC none of them is decent to my liking. After 3 hours in Wavelab (one of the only pro audio editors on the PC, Sony Sound Forge not being what it once was... yep its not Sonic Foundry anymore...)trying to separate a long audio file into several tracks I gave up, I had to select the exact part I wanted, copy it and paste it in a new document (nevermind that to do an good selection you have to be zoomed in your waveform and can't see the start and the end at the same time, so you start and select a huge chunk, then zoom in, scroll to the begin or end, move the start/end point to the right place wishing real hard that you don't inadvertently click elsewhere and deselect...), then I had to save it as a.wav and then compress it (do not compress right away if you need to make change you have to start the whole process again). A huge job, huge, it would have taken me hours to complete. I tried doing this professionnally, like I do in studio with real audio software and processors, means, make regions, move end and start point at will without risking a deselect, and export region as whatever format you wish... couldn't, all audio software on the PC do regions (regions is a standard in audio, several file format supports it...)but none actually is programmed to handle them intelligently, none, and I know a lot of audio wares. Entirely fed up with my experience I went back on my old G3 500MHz iBook Mac, a feeble beast compared to my 3.4GHz P4, 1GB ram, raptor hard drive PC, well, one hour later it was over... It might not be a speedy beast but the os let me do lots of stuff much more intelligently and fluently than Windows, so I opened the file in Peak, created regions and exported the regions as.mp3 in a folder (one menu selection and a save dialog), burned the file contained in said folder, one hour, I was at my third one on the PC...
Microsoft do not have any form of dominance in the digital media market hence this thing can't affect it...
It's not because you use Windows that you employ MS technologies, Windows Media Player plays all sort of stuff even some not invented or owned by MS. Windows media isn't really popular you know, a few porn site, some crappy news site profiting from a deal with MS and the library of the people too simple minded to change settings in WMP, so they end up with Windows Media Audio and ask you to come to their place because their mp3 won't burn on an mp3 cd...
Consider the screen size, for a rather small 15x45 screen the pixels will be 1/4inch x 1/6inch tall. It might seem little but its not, you see the pixels if you start looking at the picture quality, plus you need one very powerfull projector (6000 lumens and up) to get decent contrast. Using systems like Watchout, Blend Pro or whatever else you choose you can have resolution 4 time higher as source, make each projector project 1/16 of the source at native resolution of 1280x1024 (to date no projector have a native resolution of 2048x1080), 16 relatively cheap projector of 1500 lumens later you end up with a projected resolution of 5120x4096 in which you may fit as many lower resolutions as you wish, each pixel is damn small and you have a very well spread 9000 lumens projection. Cheaper and better...
It sometimes seems like everybody feel the need to bash Clinton just to "be fair" and show that they in fact have no bias, so their comment be read as objective.
fact: Clinton was far better in any way than Bush is, I'm not sayin he was a good man but the two simply aren't comparable.
What did he do so wrong? Lie about a blowjob so his wife wouldn't find out? She should have blown him in the first place and that wouldn't have happened. If you are a girl and reading this keep that in mind: if you don't get the wanted attention and amount of compliment you dump the guy because he doesn't seem to love you as much as you want, well, if we men don't get the sex we want we tend to feel you don't love us enough, truly, we feel you have no desire to please us and that sex is a chore to you, even if isnt in reality. make your husband bored and he'll react in the same way you would if he gets you bored... hence my comment.
Appart from that blowjob, what did the guy do that would compared to killing 100 000 civilian irakee for no reason other than economic interest, cut on welfare, education, elderly, put his country in the most enormous debt of its history, why? To kill even more people (went into "defense", defense... lol). Bush is not slowing the destruction of our planet he is accellarating it, not only he doesn't pass any law in favor of the preservation of the environment he actually fights against law and treaty that would preserve the environment, this man is the embodiement of evil in every sense of the word, but since he pats his dog and have nicely combed hair people just can't see that, image is everything in the US. The only difference between Bush america and Mordor is that Mordor looks evil because its destroying its own country first, the US administration beats Sauron at that, they destroy the rest of the world and keep their land beautifull, this way the image is clean and the american public will believe anything their administration says...
All of this to say: cut it with the "I'm objective" bullshit, there is nothing objective in comparing Clinton and Bush, or even logical...
And if you plan on using it in a permanent installation why don't you just don't use keystone correction since it screws up the image big time (the correction is done in processing, pixels are removed, the LCD matrix, or DMD matrix or led matrix, doesnt change shape and deform to adapt).
just place your projector correctly, if you really need to offset your projector, then get lens shifting...
At the end of the NewScientist piece you can read that this is just speculative and no experiment have been done...
Can you just patent anything that goes in your mind? I thought you had to present a prototype or plans or some form of research...

And if you plan on using it in a permanent installation why don't you just don't use keystone correction since it screws up the image big time (the correction is done in processing, pixels are removed, the LCD matrix, or DMD matrix or led matrix, doesnt change shape and deform to adapt).
just place your projector correctly, if you really need to offset your projector, then get lens shifting...
try way before what the articles or even some answer here suggest...
And this I would be ready to fight for... we already did, and won!
Nah I'd go with the EU anytime, that would be really nice, independance trough cooperation I like it...
