Well, it's a fact, the most influencial eastern country is China, by it's size, economical power, political structure and army size. it is the most powerfull Asian nation, culturally very different than from say Japan but as much as Swedish people are very different from american, the USA is still the most influencial country in their side of the planet (appart from their own of course).
For my job I install studios and shows, I work in AV, I am an audio consultant, a senior tech in video, I've been a teacher in a sound design school. I know technology very much its my life and I love my job. I know about audio, video, lightning, computer, networking and so on, and you know what I didn't answer his rant to point him out he was implying stuff that wasn't true. When I install a studio or live rig, it works, smoothly and securely, when I built a studio it doesn't have bugs and idiotic configuration are not part of it, it's a LOT of work but one I'm proud of. My philosophy; why computers can't be the same, why do we agree that it's good enough when it's not, I want people who built computers to be as picky as me when I build a studio, it has nothing to do with inexperience. It was no use telling him all I've done in my life, the poor win fan boy got hurt and had to retaliate, posing me as some dimwited newser, when that happens don't bother answering the flamebait.
I use several OS (Win, MacOSX, Linux knoppix, freeBSD-on its own-) and my experience with the switch is as stated above, some people won't like the truth they never will, don't bother explaining it to them...
It will be their own, it always is, they are very protective of their market and culture. It might start with Linux or something else but several things are sure:
1-China doesn't care for internationnal standards when it has too 2-China doesn't want to depend on the US for crucial technologies 3-China likes to develop it's own thing made for its own people 4-Their semantic and use of language and symbols is very different from ours, the OS interface should therefore, to be optimal, be very different then what we are used to.
So I think Asia (Asia is mostly influenced by China, it will need to be compatible with it...) will end up with some sort of OS we don't know of yet, something that fits them. It might be Linux based or something entirely different but even if it's Linux based, in the end it probably won't even be compatible with our Linux here.
I switched to a PC to play more games in a better way, I sadly believed the people telling me there weren't any significant difference between Mac and PCs as far as plug and play, stability and speed was concerned nowadays.
A little hint to all those saying this like parrots: it's not true, at all. Pcs crash a lot more, fail more often, cost more for the same power (SAME, not number wise but real-life wise) are constantly being attacked (my anti-virus keep finding stuff about every day, adaware doesn't even remove all of the spyware I get...) and need protection software constantly monitoring the computer for malware, which in turn seriously slow it down and interfere with your normal operations (and YES I use firefox before some fuckin Linux asshole point his wisdom to me). The OS is still clunky as hell, you still have to press start to stop the OS and the interface is built around the concept that you want to work with the computer not on your creations.
In short I deeply regret my switch, I play games on my PC but have switched back to my old iBook dualUSB 500MHz for everything else, this little fellow let me do more stuf in a much more stable way than my 3.4GHz 1GB ram monster PC which cost me 4230$Canadian, monitor included.
"Do the same number of people work as hard for as long to produce a movie? "
Yes, they do, it's constant and since we (most of us) understand the reality of the business we work in, we don't go whining on bulletin board so people pity us. Because we know better, we know they don't, they never will. They steal our work day in , day out, justify themselves with some fucking dimwitted comment (they unlawfully protected their work against thieves! How unjustified, we will crack their encryption make it availlable to the public so that ANYONE can steal them, see, it's called justice... or my favorite: they fuckin make millions it doesn't mather; I don't, you don't, no one does except the producer which isn't a person but a company filled with person which are paid a salary, the fact that their stealing cost me some job they don't give a flying fuck about, I could fucking die of hunger they wouldn't care, in their mind, they have the right to steal...) and absolutely don't give a fuck about you.
So public whinning lead you to nothing. If you can't take the reality of a market just leave it. As for me, I worked for television, in studio and I now work in live, I've been installer, consultant, operator, editor and supervisor, in all case the same reality repeated itself: the show is thuesday 8H00, not friday, you can't call millions of people to tell them "sorry I'm late" deadlines in television do mean something, if you can't accept that leave the field. That is what separate the big boys from the cable pullers, some can take it and be good at it, others can't. Most of the time those others who fail are the same one that will steal and justify themselves with the sort of dimwitted comment you can read above...
Reality check, it hurts but its true.
If your hapiness can cost them 1cent you could die they wouldn't care, except on bulletin board.
BTW, have you even wondered how many people, the ones who wrote back to you telling you that they are on your side and so on, have, not even 5min. after writting this, went on supernova.org to pirate a game...
hint, a lot, and your husband long hours are the result of the cost cut necessary to sell them the game to the acceptable price of 40-60$, which they find too high anyway...
those polls of most influencial, most revered, most efficient, most appreciated, most whatever, are only there to draw eyeballs to the magazines that makes them, they wanted more Linux type in their readership, juts name Linus Torvald influencial (sorry for the coke poppping out of my nose...) and a drove of Linuxheadz will go to your site, plus you will probably get the approval of such influencial site as Slashdot, Ars Technica or any Linux mag/website, which will greatly augment the number of clicks to your site, which will augment the number of visit per day, which will augment the amount you ask for publicity (which is sold by the eyeball...), plus, if those geek are on your side you do get some geek-cred and more subscribtions...
I actually have bought the game, what a blast it is, I dig this thing a lot. However, my geek mind wasn't able to deal with the copy protection scheme, not in the sense that I didn't like it but in the sense that I was wondering what was sent to Valve, how, when, why does it need to connect everytime I play and so on. Since pirates usually figure that out before me I downloaded a crack version so I could check which file were changed and how, and maybe get a few hints on how the Valve authentication system works.
Pure curiosity since I already have bought the game. I downloaded, didn't find anything interesting since it was the actual source code that has been stolen which I needed to compile and so on. I was very disapointed but since I also have a life I stoped my investigation there, disapointed by the unfruitfull long wait of the download.
Thank God! I could be cut off today...

Because you fucking morons just don't want to work or actually try to this is what we have to deal with!
Tag your child, watching them is too hard for us. At least if they were tagged a machine would do it, it would be far more usefull than us actually watching them! Pfff, like I have to work or somethin'!
Moron utter moron, freedom is not a luxury or something you bypass to ease the job of some lazy fuckwit.
One can hardly run a studio with only one software, I'll agree that the main required software has finally been made for Linux but there is a host of other software you need to actually run a studio. Librarians/editors, machine control for your automated consolle, track and cue sheet software, archival software (which surely exist on Linux), countless number of utilities; BPM to delay calculators, pitch to loop lenght calculators, you know, little utilities you just can't live without in the end when you get use to their function. You will also need, pitch detectors and a lot of pluggins, from noise reduction to convolution-based reverb and so on.
What I'm trying to say is that, this Wired software looks fun and potentially great but as of now it looks like it's not even on par with Cakewalk (or Sonar if you prefer) which in turn, aren't on par with anything they are the lowest grade wares you might find in a studio (I say might because I never have seen a studio running on Cakewalk or Sonar).
I sincerly hope some LinuxHeadz will be jumping at this and bring us back the good ol' days on the Mac, when the entire audio community was working on one platform making better and better by the day, now the devellopement effort are spread a lot less new wares and a lot more me-too wares are being made, Wired has the potential to change that. The Linux community has the necessary structure to bring this back and make this software evolve and get complete with an incredible assortment of companion wares.
So a first step it might be but it's a great one and the future will tell us if it was a leap... go Linux!

Nevermind that I read more on politics than most politic figure I must be wrong cause I'm a programmer not a politician, here is the diploma that proves it, thank you for showing me I was just another delusional kid, I'll vote republican next elections."
Where stealing technologies from big commercial company is good(tm), and company that protect their assets are bad(tm). Company stealing from open source is Bad(tm) and open source that protect their asset(!!!???) is good(tm).
Actually how the F*ck do you guys expect to protect something that is freely (as in free beer) availlable on the world wide web with no serious copyright of any kind? How can you guys consider it ledgit to publish cracked security keys, hacks to encryption algorythms, à la Itune AAC key, the DVD key and so on, but not ledgit to repackage open-source technologies I mean if you are against repackaging how come you support the idea of millions of distros of Linux?
You asked for it remember? The last elections... doesn't ring a bell, you guys chose the man who thinks freedom is a barrier to freedom, the man who thinks your security is so important that locking you in a cage is for your own good (of course you'll have the right to have your AK-47, don't worry, they will respect you constitution given right to kill people, we know how important violence is to you so...).
Anyways one little word of wisdom to all americans BLUE and RED. That won't work this time, Bush hasn't stolen the election he won them, wether by your actions or inactions, I know that all american travelling outside will tell us that THEY voted Kerry and they have nothing to do with it, actually all americans to which we will speak will try that bullshit but welcome to the very nature of democracy: YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE. You are your government, you chose the guy who is bent on the destruction of every living soul that do not bow before you. LIVE WITH YOUR CHOICE, next asshole who plunge into your buildings won't make us cry, you expressedly asked for it, you cannot menace the entire planet and expect to get friends. So starting for this day on, you guys might want to believe Echelon and Carnivore aren't real, you might convince yourself that you are free, you might try to pose as guardians of morality I don't give a shit and about anyone I know either, YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR EVERYTHING THAT WILL HAPPEN NEXT, you are as good of a target then any governement member or military personnel, because you are your governement, this my friends is called democracy, live with it, and in the meantime try to get some education cause according to your own Ben Franklin, democracy is impossible without eductation, result: Bush, and it's your fault.
As for this other episode of your liberties get corrupted get use to it and stop crying cause crying doesn't solve problems, actions do. Plus, you asked for it...
Actually I feel the intense need to correct a mistake I made. I work everyday in many technical field, this is the nature of my work where I am from. No tech here is just a soundman or just a video tech or just a lightning technician and so on. Since I usually am the soundman and video engineer, I made the assumption I was doing that there and I realized after that I was there for the audience response system...
Lion king wasn't made for IMAX, it has been ported to it, like Ghost in the shell: innocence, however GITS:innocence has been recomposited and remastered especially for IMAX, not just reprinted on 70mm...
I was the soundman/video engineer on an GSTA (giant screen theatre of america) event about 1-2 month ago where they were presenting, to giant screen theatre owners from around the world, various work in devellopement and work in progress. Several flick caught my attention (the 70mm IMAX version of Ghost In The Shell: Innocence being one!:) ) and Polar Express was part of those.
Polar Express is not only the first to be entirely made with digitized actors it is also the first feature lenght IMAX animation movie, the first feature lenght movie in IMAX 3D and the first movie funded by Tom Hanks himself. Tom Hanks was described as an avid Imax 3D supporter, he wants to push the technology and was actually the one who suggested Polar Express as a project, he was deeply involved in the process. The result does not look like a tech showdown at all, it looks like an incredibly good animation that plays with and use the 3D technology to enhance messages, emotion and aprehensions, not to showcase it. Nowhere in the extract they showed to the crowd did I had the impression they were just showing tech, actually as soon as the extract started I kinda forgot I was watching 3D, it just felt natural.
Canadian dollars not US dollars, 3 virri has EVERYTHING to do with the PC, as much as there are more game on the PC there are more virii on the PC, in all my Mac year I never caught one. So correction, the PC part has everything to do with the virus side of things, whatever the reason of the why or the how, this is the case. NO control over the OS, try osX once and you'll understand, everything is customizable, the look, the behavior, everything. In windows a lot is predetermined and unchangeable. Check your facts.
BTW, I have been buildings studios for the past 7 years, I built PC I configured Macs (lots of 'em). If I bought a 4000$CAN PC it's because this is what I needed, NO 1000$ PC can do or sustain the amount of work I give this baby, sorry for your shattered dreams but 1000$ PCs are only good for forum bragging, I have some real work to do...
All my professionnal life I was happy with only Mac at homes, dealing with PC on my job was enough for me so that I wanted some working piece of gear when going home. Years have pass and I started telling myself that the only reason the PC looked horrible to me is because I didn't own one, so I bought something that could handle my work and play games very decently, as it turns out, I was wrong, even by the time I'll know all the details I ignored while simply working professionnaly with them (my personnal computers get pushed far more than my pro ones, I can test all I want on them) I'll still think they are a lesser form of computers. People don't mind instability and unreliability, I do. I get a lot less of those with my Mac (but still enough so I thought I wouldn't see the change by getting a PC, boy I was wrong).
Simply put, I just bought a 4230$ PC to play game, I got it a month ago. Very powerfull but not as much as I thought, some games I can't even play at the highest settings, considering the specs it's rather disapointing (X800XT, P4 3.4GHz, 1GBDDRII, 800MHz bus...). I optimized it the most I can but still. I played Doom3, Warcraft3, Ghost Recon, a load of demos. One game that just got released, Men of Valor (demo), has problem playing at 1024x768 (I get 24-30 FPS)!!!
The video card fan is already defective, I had to reformat and loose a bit of stuff just to move my OS to another drive, and the bottom case fan makes some weird noise. The FIRST week I caught 3 virii.
I should have gone with a Mac, sincerly, I thought I would have an orgy of games on the PC side and yes, I played them early and there are more but its more of the same so... I'm quite disapointed, Windows isn't on par with osX at all (like some say), it is a very frustrating OS, I feel I have control over nothing.
But I know I will get use to it, as soon as the defective parts are changed and I spend 1hour per day on maintenance (adware cleaning, virus scan...) it might get fun...
The market share of Linux is NOT measurable in any way since it mostly isn't sold but downloaded and who knows how many time each user downloaded their distros for various reasons (I know I downloaded parts of many flavors of Linux, I don't use them at all, I tried them and haven't stick with it). Someone downloading Linux doesn't mean he is going to use it, he might just want to do this, try it, that doesn't mean he will use. So, NO way of measuring the market share of Linux, plus Linux comes in a myriad of flavors called distros most of which contain stuff that will only run on their packages, Linux isn't even compatible with Linux most of the time. So which distro has the market share over the Mac? None, Linux the kernel might be popular but it's hardly a system. Even if you consider it a system we go back to point number 1; its market share CANNOT be measured.
So speculate as much as you whish give yourself any amount of pat in the back but reality check: Linux is a patchwork of bordelic code made by some incredibly self-centered devellopper that won't take a iota of criticism and truly live in an alternate reality, I know its hard to take but this is how me and every person I work with view this. It doesn't have any significant market share and if truly more than 5% of the world use this tell me why I have seen only 3 Linux box in the past years (last year actually) in internationnal conventions on subject ranging from science to politics to education to unions to IBM conventions and so on. This is my job I am an AV technician and I do mostly internationnal conventions of all type, people come there from all over the world to speak on a myriad of subjects, I have seen WAY more Macs than I have seen Linux boxes, their number is even groing to the point where my boss actually wants to BUY some Macs for the company because they are now inevitable. PC data me as you whish this is where we are at. And I am writting this on my personnal PC a 4230$ machine that runs windows, I am no mac freak in any sense of the term, this is pure observation. BTW even when doing a convention on its Linux services, IBM asked us to use windows machine for their convention and not even 1% of the attendants were using Linux.
Have you ever thought that the MS "war" on Linux is merely a way to divert your attention from the Mac by making another system suposedly the center of attention, a system that has, as of now, no chance to compete with anyone outside of the server market?
Now since I said that on Slashdot I find it sad that most won't read this (this reality check has been in need for a long while and has been formulated by MANY in hope that one day, instead of whinning, the Linux community actually accepts it and do something about it so it can become the great stuff it should be), I'll be modded down first thing following the post...
Free speech protects content not containers, a website registration doesn't constitute free speech since it's not even speech, it's what you do with the website that's free speech. Cybersquating it is, free speech has nothing to do with it...
This whole multi boot system thing is very nice really but I believe osX introduced (to my world actually, don't know about reality) a feature far more impressive no one has truly exploited yet as far as multi-system is concerned.
Classic and X11 are both environment, various systems coexisting and sharing osX ressources at the same time, this is not emulation or virtual machines it goes beyond, letting apps access hardware directly amongst other.
Put that in the PC world, so as far as we are dreaming here anyway, here is my what if:
What if Windows could be made into an environment, and linux, and plan9 and so on? What if Windows implemented the environment concept and osX be made in an environment? Forget multiple boot, welcome multiple concurent systems, it is possible, it would be awesome.
I think you fail to understand the view your government (and mine for that matter) has on you. It obviously isn't there to get us, like you said, but we merely are the asset of one big organisation and this organisation must do anything in it's power so that we continue to consumme and obey. Hidding truth, propaganda, social measures all have this purpose in mind.
We live in a model, like every society, the values we decided we would cherish are the boundaries of this model, once it's running, if we stop it, the people operating it will fall. This is why everything must be approched with those values in mind, a change in values (not in polarity but in substance) will deffinitely trouble the leaders of our society, the day people got aware of the environmental problems and decided to fight for it has brought enormous changes in our society, it cost a lot, structures need to be changed and the leaders will do all they can to still hold power and until they have found a way to integrate this value in a way that doesn't change the chain of command and their power level ecological thinking will be a rebel thing they will invoke to look good in public speeches. I take the whole clothing industry as an example, eco-friendly design on environmentaly harmfull synthetic fabric (some synthetic fabric aren't harmfull btw...) is very common. The best way to hold power is to feed the opposition, give them clothes, music and movies that show their opinions and they will buy it and be proud of it and participate in the grand model you setted up, the biggest consummers are the rebels, this has been a great victory.
Keep that in mind, the governement isn't there to get us, they have nothing against us but they need to use us and gear our mindsets if we are to form a good base for their society. They've become very proficient in this art.
You're believing Michael Moore about this, aren't you? This is one of his many lies. Witnesses on the spot have a different story.
Do you mean the cameras? Cause the guy has been filmed, no need to believe anyone, just look at the video feed and you'll see him in all it's glory.
Problem is most republican swore to never see this movie AND judge it by "speaking the truth" and "expose it's lie" so they found countless explanation for stuff they don't even know jack about.
Except Titanic isn't a documentary it's a fiction. Giving credits to the infos in a documentary that indeed makes his point is a good way to get infos on political issues, believing every wars american fought did indeed happened like in the various (one would say countless) holywood war movies in quite moronic, even then, the second happens more often the the first. To compare a documentary to Titanic by giving them the same factual value is, best case scenario, dupe.

The Linux community has the necessary structure to bring this back and make this software evolve and get complete with an incredible assortment of companion wares.
So a first step it might be but it's a great one and the future will tell us if it was a leap...
go Linux!
By ridiculing everyone who sees conspiracy (wether it exist or not) the conspirators found the best tool to shut the enlightened up.
"Oh finaly a book that tells me I'm just a delusional moron, I'm so happy to now know that every observation my very technical, analytical, organized and rationnal mind made on politics turns out to be illusions made by my defective brain, I should have guess that all those capacity my brain possess can only be applied to my everyday job and not the rest of the world.
The last elections... doesn't ring a bell, you guys chose the man who thinks freedom is a barrier to freedom, the man who thinks your security is so important that locking you in a cage is for your own good (of course you'll have the right to have your AK-47, don't worry, they will respect you constitution given right to kill people, we know how important violence is to you so...).
;)) )
/rant over
Anyways one little word of wisdom to all americans BLUE and RED.
Feel safer?
(man I can feel my karma burning already!
you know what? That felt good..
Actually I feel the intense need to correct a mistake I made. I work everyday in many technical field, this is the nature of my work where I am from. No tech here is just a soundman or just a video tech or just a lightning technician and so on. Since I usually am the soundman and video engineer, I made the assumption I was doing that there and I realized after that I was there for the audience response system...
;)
you don't give a shit but I do
Lion king wasn't made for IMAX, it has been ported to it, like Ghost in the shell: innocence, however GITS:innocence has been recomposited and remastered especially for IMAX, not just reprinted on 70mm...
I was the soundman/video engineer on an GSTA (giant screen theatre of america) event about 1-2 month ago where they were presenting, to giant screen theatre owners from around the world, various work in devellopement and work in progress. Several flick caught my attention (the 70mm IMAX version of Ghost In The Shell: Innocence being one! :) ) and Polar Express was part of those.
I'm really looking forward to the full release.
So speculate as much as you whish give yourself any amount of pat in the back but reality check:
Linux is a patchwork of bordelic code made by some incredibly self-centered devellopper that won't take a iota of criticism and truly live in an alternate reality, I know its hard to take but this is how me and every person I work with view this.
Compared to being a Peep Show cabins cleaner...
