First, AC3 decoding already exist on many computer audio hardware, AC3 can ONLY be "done on the fly" and their surround positioning example picture made me choke, surround speakers must be behind, roughly each midway between center and side front speakers, not in front midway between your chair and tv!...
This article is irrevelant and you shouldn't buy stuff according to what you find in it.
For a computer this generation it is quite underpowered for the actual needs, don't expect to see big games on the Mac for a long time, there is not much motivation in producing games that will only run on the PowerMacs... there isn't much motivation for games on all mac anyway but this won't help much. I just got myself one big PC to get over my gaming needs, as much as my Mac does everything else (email, net, audio, budget and so on) it wasn't fit for gaming at all and I wasn't seeing decent gaming hardware coming on the Mac for a while, turns out I was right.
And BTW, being multiplatform is the best thing I could do to my computing experience...

The sole purpose of this is to have a legitimate reason to blow the sh*t out of any emerging country that tries to develop nuclear power on its own. By doing this they will monopolize the emerging country energy market by saying said country has no reason to devellop on it's own since perfectly viable solution are out there (obviously they will mean their own tech).
This way they can invade the country, get reconstruction contracts (once you understand that in capitalism the industry rules the government, it's easy to understand that even if the army is gone the country is now controlled by the reconstructors, the country which invaded the land) and they get to sell their crap tech high price or get the new government to make their business a legal monopoly, to the same people that can't feed their population.
And about nuclear proliferation, I would like to remind you that the only country which has been moronic enough to use the nuclear weapon is the US of A, twice!
Thing is I personnaly encourage any country to get into nuclear for the same reason the US got into nuclear in the first place, dissuasion. Cause right now the number one enemy in the world, the most evil and reviled nation in the world is the US, and for the last four years they have been menacing lots of countries and calling people evil and identifying them as your enemy isn't the best way to make friend, it's actually pretty legitimate for any country to devellop nuclear weapons, because if the US has the right to "defend itself" those countries also have this right and when your self-declared enemy is the US you better be doing better then knives!
Have they even ever have thought about being friendly and not cocky, pretentious and self-declared god, just, you know, friendly, not posting themselves as the world savior just being nice, that's simple no? nice. Seems to be working real well up here in Canada, I mean no one is jealous of our freedom yet... except the US governement who calls us terrorist and is afraid that if we legalize weed their population might come here to smoke, so we have to take responsibility for the total lack of respect of their own law by their own citizen, great, they now block OUR freedoms...
according to them, if the CPU's are trully to ever reach such temperature we'll need some serious termal isolation in our casing, not for the CPUs, for us.
"With all of these new recording format options made available to the public, how can any consumer intelligently know which one to buy into?"
Simple, don't go for compatibility, go with whatever you need ost between speed or capacity.
Optical media are awfull when it comes to compatibility, at this point it is even a lost cause, there are already too much format. Each OS dealing with each format somewhat differently (ex.: session made ISO9660 after a session made HFS won't show in Windows) make the compatibility problem even worse.
For compatibility I go thumbdrive, USB key, however you wanna call them, these are marvelous, they work cross-platform and very well.
In the line of bad translation or cultural mistakes done by big company there's this one from here in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. When they released the movie "The Cell" featuring J.Lo in DVD and video, all you could see in the rental clubs were walls covered with J.Lo's face bearing the title "La Cellule".
Thing is, Cellule is the name we give dumb girl around here, all in the look none in the brain, damn they translated it alright!
The amount of money you have has nothing to do with your philosophies. If you were born poor and lived poor a huge part of your life then you'll remember the frustrations and motives that made you do your best so that you aren't poor anymore. You'll probably want to fight against what was pissing you off. That's why lotery is somewhat dangerous, you always have the chance that a very conservative institution gives a huge amount of it's own weapon to a leftist. I have no problem with the leftist using the money, that doesn't make him less leftist...
Those guys might not have anything in common with you and me now but contrary to GWB and co they once had everything to do with you and me, that's why they don't need to own media channels or control them to get their message accross, a simple movie and people will go to it instead of it going to the public...
Yesterday, big mistake, I brought forth constructive criticism about the Linux distro wolrd...
ouch
karma bonus droped right away and in no time my flamebait moderation had to be to good to me cause it got rated overrated, I mean... I was THAT close to be banned;))
it seems to me the Linux community is bound to canibalize itself with this whole distro thing. If some distro publisher/devellopper actually wants to make money out of it they clearly invite criticism an anymosity from other in the Linux community, they instantly become a target of choice, limiting further growth.
However it seems to me that without capital investment the Linux evolution will suffer, not in quality but pace. I'd be surprised that Linux ever become better than Windows or MacOSX if no "burst of developement" is made possible by managing to get developers to work day in-day out on a project. Appart from a lucky few not many people in our days manage to get lots of free time to program. People also need to pay the rent so I don't see many option here, someone has to find a way to make money out of this if it's to evolve at a decent pace.
however, by focusing on their product (proprietary) and not the entire community, those develloppers slow the whole Linux evolution and defy it's purpose.
So what's left? If the community would agree to all work on one distro (or a very few flavors; embeded, desktop, server, etc.) develloppement would be fast and simplicity would finaly be truly part of the equation, interoperability would be a lot easier to deal with too so would be security, interface coherence and uniformity, and about every part of devellopement.
As long as everyone will try to be the one Linux, the one people will choose over the others, Linux is bound to be eaten by it's own community.
At this point people like you are paradoxicaly so disconnected from reality. I mean you are surrounded by people but speak to someone that's not there with you in the crowd, then use your cell to watch TV on it just to make sure you forget you surroundings (the day I'll see a moron driving while watching TV on his cell isn't far then, how sad...), it's like travelling with your house on your back, your "personnal bubble" cannot be bursted. At this point you shouldn't get out of your home; use delivery services, get cable and satelite, do business with escort services and it seems you'll be in paradise... fake land unlimited awaits you.
The biggest problem with people like this is that while they manage to forget their surroundings, their surrounding cannot forget them, they bump into people, slow dows traffic, cause car crashes, are systematicaly in the way; one has to think about those people who stop doing anything when answering their cell phones, like walking while being in a doorway for example. Some people just cannot walk and answer the phone at the same time. Imagine the person watching sports and stopping everytime the game becomes intense because he/she doesn't want to miss anything. They make noise, talk loud, make gestures to bodily explain what they are saying even though the listener doesn't see them (now imagine the sport fan getting emotionnal in the restaurant with his earphones on...), actually, they make their godamn best to disturb the shit out of you, but they do not realize it so they feel good about it and think they piss you off just because you are jealous of them...
When you bought the router you made the bandwith availlable, bandwith isn't an item it's a measure. If everyone (almost) is somehow connected via WI-FI the only bandwith you use is the one provided by those router, which you paid for and made availlable, like the others.
If you are refering to downloading file, again this isn't communication per se but it doesn't matter since you download file from someone else on the network created by the interconnection of many WI-FI routers.
If you download of a site that isn't on the network but on some web page or foreign ftp server or whatever then yes, someone is paying for this connection.
Interesting point however be aware that I wasn't talking about entertainment but communication, using iChat doesn't leech anything, no bill to pay here.
Cable is another thing, you'll need more bandwith than what WI-FI provide you with anyways (as of now).
All those talks on network security sometimes bugs me. All those leftist trying as hard as they can to make the right wing extremist's job easy.
The lack of security over WI-FI is a good thing. Ever thought about the democratization of communications, WI-FI can bring you that, unsecure WI-FI WILL bring you that. With file encrytion files are safe (mostly) anyways, that's what we need to promote. Leaving your network open will just make it accessible by other people which, if they get the hardware themselves will make this network availlable to more and more people and so on.
In a few years when you wanna call someone you basically open iChat, MSN messenger, whatever, turn on rendez-vous or equivalent find your contact name and double-click. Get it?
Security isn't always a good thing, making everything locked just make sthe world harder to travel, some doors need to be opened.
In the very unllikely event that I win a huge amount of cash, dream number one is to get several WI-FI routers and configure them to enable a neibourhood network, hoping to change it into a city network and so on. I dream of the day communication will be democratized, free, for everyone.
Instead, as of now, the technology exist, it's there for everyone to grab, but they all stare at it, telling themselves: "too complicated and the router is around 200$CAN, it's expensive, I'd rather pay 30$ a month plus long distance and service fees for the rest of my life"...
In the "fact sheet" section you will learn that: How does Deep Lake Water Cooling Work?
Enwave's three intake pipes draw water (4C) from Lake Ontario 5km off shore at a depth of 83 meters below the surface. Naturally cold water makes its way to the City's John Street Pumping Station. There, heat exchangers facilitate the energy transfer between the icy cold lake water and the Enwave closed chilled water supply loop.
The water drawn from the lake continues on its regular route through the John Street Pumping Station for normal distribution into the City potable water supply.
Enwave uses only the coldness from the lake water not the actual water to provide the alternative to conventional air-conditioning.
What are the Environmental benefits?
Compared to conventional chillers, Deep Lake Water Cooling reduces energy usage by 75%. This frees more than 59 megawatts from the Ontario's electrical grid.
Harmful ozone depleting refrigerants, CFC's and HCFC's are reduced.
40,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide are removed from the air -- equivalent to taking 8000 cars off the road.
To be clear, no water is exchanged and the cold water from the bottom of the lake isn't sent back there after the heat exchange (chill exchange) it continues to it's way to the pumping station and into the city.
This is actually a brilliant idea that should be used as an inspiration to think multisources when thinking energy. Why always oil or electrical? Heat, cold and motion can be generated in a lot of ways...
I actually had the same feeling, plus the chopter is hovering in front of a blue screen, the easiest surface over which to place anything pasted from alsewhere and the chopter cast no shadow on the screen (which could be possible depending on lighting). I don't see any reason why someone would edit the lift-off and landing out especially since they are the critical part of a chopter flight.
Looks fake, even if there are no reason to fake this, I mean this is not the invention to fame (cancer cure or some'), it,s just a nice toy, weird...
I happen to work in AV and this tool could be of a great help to us.
We just purchased several Dataton Watchout stations and this thing could complement it wonderfully.
the link has been sent to the appropriate persons where I work, let's hope testing will prove it stable and powerfull enough. It looks good on the website, reality might differ, it often does.
I'm not talking about the kind where the (and by far) biggest producers and consummers of porn in the world suddenly feel pure when seeing a metal covered tit during the superbowl and take "measures" so that it doesn't happen again.
I'm talking about the one where only US athlete will be shown, when they win or could and before the dope test, so as to again falsely give the impression to the american population that they are the best. Hell on forums troughout the net most americans will tell you they've been the most cheered country during the countries announcement when, actually, they were boo'ed. This is not a coincidence, some stuff is happening before it gets on their TV. How many time in the past did world athlete did exceptionnal stuf and it wasn't even covered in american medias, all that was covered is their guy loosing, they just can't stand not being the center of attention. The country which is the least aware of the world is the one that judge it the most, how sad, one wonders why?
when racism affects your judgement of an article it's the equivalent of having no judgement in the first place. Racism is the single most evocative measure of a person lack of judgement or mental abstraction capabilities.
It's funny, as I was reading the article I couldn't shake off my head the idea that the strategy employed by Microsoft here is somewhat the same that Apple use against them; "it's complicated", "it's unfinished"... and Apple lost the consummer market...
Plus, Apple coulnd't compete with "cheap" and Microsoft will loose to "free"...
on a side note:
Ease of use is a very bad argument, it doesn't seem to attract people for a very simple reason, if it's complicated or buggy it gives them a socialy acceptable reason "not to" (finnish a report, complete a homework, do something). The entire IT industry is based around this concept, without bad products ITs wouldn't be that many (conspiracies aside this is still a fact). Apple want to succedd they should start making their OS buggy, virus prone and badly designed, IT's would switch in droves...
**Sorry for what is a second post, first one was done without me logged-in**
I actually was in the process of building me a good PC for Stanton Final Scratch and serious gaming. The thing is that the only way I could get an X800 XT was to import it from the US, pay the customs, shipping and canadian taxes. It won't be availlable here before mid-october and that's according to an ATI representative over email. If I would have decided on AMD in about 2 years I'd be totally f*cked, no chipset support PCI-E yet and AMD are planing serious change to their processor line in 2005 and I doubt the next upgrade I would have done would have been on the same socket. Nvidia? They need special power supplies and except for Doom3 they are mostly inferior in performance.
So here I was kinda stuck with Intel because of PCI-E (and the novelty of socket 775 makes me feel safe for future upgrade) and with no way to get a decently priced X800 XT. I wen't to Dell site and I could configure me an XPS with exactly what I needed including a video card I couldn't get otherwise in Canada, for 4000$CAN I got what would have cost me 3800$CAN otherwise, without mentionning lack of availlability (I build several concept over the web on frontierpc.com, tigerdirect.ca, local mom and pop shop and large surface retailler, I did my research). That 200$ actually gets me a waranty for my entire machine, not one per part it's made of.
All in all I believe I made a very good choice. Now, I don't live in the US or elsewhere where pricing might be quite different...
If there are more people speaking one language in some place it's just normal that it become the de facto language. Most speak portuguese then portuguese it is, second to most is english then english should be considered the second language of choice. Democracy, majority rules, isn't that what americans promote?
I've been working in audio for the past 7 years (I also went to school to study sound design and audio engineering), I have a very good hearing. I've worked in studio, post-production, school as a teacher and technical supervisor in sound design and now in AV for coorporate event, I also am an audio consultant for musicians and studios.
the difference between about any piece of gear can be heard quite easily. The thing is that every piece of equipment somewhat "colors" the sound; it's frequency response, dynamics, induced artifacts and reaction over time (audio gear specifications change depending on how long the unit has been powered) will be different than the others, even between different units of the same models (the main reason why matched pair of mics or speakers cost a lot).
but as of now, if I would compare audio to video, I'd say people are listening non-compressed HD1080i video on televisions from the 80s with 100% more brightness and contrast with a 57 degree sub-carrier offset. No joke no exageration. This all comes from the louder is better concept, louder sells more than better. The reason is that when you listen to speakers with a very flat frequency response you don't need a high amplitude, everything is there, on consummer speakers the frequency response is bad so to compensate one has to raise the volume so as to hear the frequency which could not be reproduced correctly (usually the bass or high frequencies). Since the difference between louder is therefore more obvious than the difference between better, louder is considered better.
So, all of this to say that with a good monitoring system, like the ones you find in a studio, differences can be heard because you watch HD1080i video on an HD1080i native-resolution screen. Since every converters aren't made the same, they sound differently and you hear it. Plus the experience and listening practices do help...
Now, for distortion, if the audio goes over 0dBfs it will distort, for sure, but, signal-to-noise ratios on good converter can reach around 116-119dB (24 bits converters), it's a lot, so self-generated broadband noise is indeed very low and not even peceivable but distortion will always be. If you meant THD distortion, again most good converters display a level of THD distortion which isn't perceivable by even very good hears. the difference between how each piece of gear sounds is still there though because a lot more than distortion and S/N ratios give the tonal caracteristics of some equipment.
There is a very simple reason why tube are said to sound better. When a tube overloads, it induces 3rd harmonic distortion (odd order) whereas transistors output 2nd harmonic distortion.
The later is harsher on the ear, more edgy. The reason is that when a transistor overloads it actually "cut" the peak of each wave cycle overloading, effectively transforming the round wave into a square wave. Tube distortion is said to be warm because it's steady and fuzzy, when it distort it "squashes" the peak of each cycle oveloading instead of "cutting" it. Tube also have a better headroom than transistors (amount, in dB, a signal can overload before the distortion is actually perceivable).
Transistor are more clinical, which isn't bad at all and is something you'll often want, actually in recording mics and preamps and about anything are more like brushes to an artist than simple tools. Each piece of gear has its sound, each sound has its place. tubes aren't better than transistors, they're just different. When each of them starts to misbehave the tube is gentler though.
Well just reading your answer, the email you sent him, prove the Washington Post guy points. Reread yourself, it's awfull the stuff you consider normal and easy, and by the way, "almost" is not enough.
going on chats to install stuff or find it is totally counter-intuitive, even more when you need info. Hell, IRC is counter-intuitive! I never have done IRC more than 20 min. in a row, too much commands, specifications, preferences, abreviation, assholes... if you have to go trough this "simple" step to understand how to install a software, you're doomed. And I'm not a noob or something I just consider knowing the equivalent of a dictionnary to use a software stupid, I'm the type of geek that prefers productivity, simplicity and getting the work done, not marveling in front of my supa skillz mastering the chat commands and understanding every acronyms in existenz!
looking at the mod description its hard not to think frustrated americans modded me, what I'm saying is perfectly valid, if you can't handle the truth there is no need to mod it down so that it dissapear, oh wait, this technique actually works, too sad for me...
