    It's not supply and demand, because high-end cooling units probably get used as much with graphics as CPUs, at least in expensive desktops.

    Maybe the just reckon that that sort of gamer has more money to blow on overpriced stuff to allow the graphics go faster?

    The OP suggested that it's a record for calculating Pi, not just for clock speed. That's not for computers in general, obviously, and probably not for single processors either unless you set restrictions on what counts as one processor (one x86 processor with no multi-core technology?).

    The bottleneck would be the graphics card, not the processor, of course.

    What is dmix and how does it work?

    It's not an just an issue with 2 sounds at once, it can be difficult to get quake running even with nothing else doing sound.

    Anti-cheat. Haha.

    It's crap at that, but it's very good at stopping people using duplicate CD keys. Which is a shame, because I see nothing morally wrong with two people on a LAN using the same copy to play on a server.

    I hope this release helps kill off punkbuster usage on Quake 3 servers.

    I know this is not tech support forum, but this is obviously going to take time to fix, so for now:
    Has anyone got a good way to work around the problems with ALSA? The only success I've had has been with artsdsp, but with that the sound lags 2 secs behind gameplay, which is too distracting. Anyone know a way to make arts react a bit faster?

    Seriosly, though, maybe someone will fix ALSA support a little bit, maybe use SDL for the sound like many Doom and Quake derived engines do and allow a good choice of sound drivers. Maybe even a proper aRts driver, so you can listen to music and get the Q3 sound effects (don't talk to me about artsdsp; hearing the sound 2 seconds late is worse than nothing).

    Are you sure? Check how restrictive licences can be. Have you never installed something on two of your own computers when the licence doesn't permit it, for example?

    You must have done something. Have you never copied a tape or taped some radio, back when everyone did?

    That's why good FPSs simulate bullet spread, i.e. the bullets randomly fall slightly off from where they're aimed at. That way the "AI" doesn't have to be programmed to aim badly, which is also boring. The same limits can be imposed on humans and AI. This is done by degrees of the angle, not total distance, so I suppose you still need to stop them behaving like an aimbot at close range.
    Maybe it's better to limit the reaction time somehow? Maybe a limit on the speed they can rotate their point of view would be good. After all, a major issue for human player is how fast they can turn the mouse.

    Have you heard of Klik?
    It's aim is to eventually allow all packages in Debian's ATP repository (that's a lot of software) to be installed and run just by clicking a link in the web browser.

    Not something I know much about, but what if you had a special receiver which could attach to/wrap around an Ethernet cable? It could have shielding built-in so the only big source of RF would be the cable.
    Wouldn't work at range, but at least it wouldn't show up as a physical connection to the network...

    Even in safe mode, you get some unmovable files (i.e. files which are open).

    What about nuclear weapons?

    The US military could have kept that a secret, waiting for when they really need it. But they used them unnecessarily in a war they had already won, and other nations copied it.

    If they had some amazing technology that would win all wars for them, they would probably make sure everyone knew about it so that they wouldn't even have to use it.

    This is clearly very important data which it would be criminal to just throw away. It's taken 30 years and god knows how much money to gather it all. So why doesn't NASA care about it? Is it putting all it's money into manned exploration (shuttle replacement, Mars, etc.)?

    You're just grepping the memory.

    "Llama" first got loaded into RAM by your browser when you loaded my sig; then again when you executed the command.

    In my case, there were also some weird ones. All sorts of stuff is in your computer's memory, stuff that would never go on the disks. If you have any P2P software, you will get usernames and filenames from other users. I tried it again just now, and the first result:
    WTF?! I get the same Llama message by grepping mem. What causes that?m
    Later on, I see the HTML source of that /. page, then the plain text that's clearly been through the HTML parser, then some old posts I made on another site weeks ago (why are they in memory? Presumably to do with Konqueror's autocompletion, but I haven't been to that site this session...).

    It's all weird. There's enough stuff there that even a word like "Llama" will come up somewhere.

    BTW, if you want to avoid getting modded down, don't use your karma bonus on offtopic posts. It makes the mods more likely to notice.

    In some areas the aerial photographs seem to be black and white, with park areas tinted green.

    See this example (of the same area mentioned above with fucked up building layouts).

    Especially if you don't have a perfectly configured distribution, and some of these config files are in the system directories, while others are in the user/app directories...
    Er, you do realise that the files are supposed to be split between system and user dirs, don't you?

    The user should be allowed to change their wallpaper, but shouldn't be able to change (read: break) network settings or daemon settings.

    Presumably they added a really big fuel tank.
    It should be amusing if this thing crashes badly. There's a reason manned vehicles should have small tanks...

    (Incidentally, I once saw an LPG converted Land Rover on ebay with a huge bottle on the roof. It had ~200 miles range. LPG's not going to blow up in quite the same way though.)

    I've been in a dust devil too, in the hot, dry parts in the south-east of Yemen, though it passed over me; I didn't walk into it on purpose.

    It should be pointed out to /.ers who've never seen one that earth ones are nothing like as powerful as the Martian variety, and that all you need to do for safety is to wear sunglasses or something over your eyes and a cloth over your mouth and nose so you don't inhale dust/sand.
