Read the original BF quote and you'll see you are very liberally applying it's meaning. When you add "essential" and "temporary" back in the quote it makes sense and doesn't apply.
I've seen this lame excuse for a reply on a similar rant of mine. Here's the problem with your insult/reply.
Every developer thinks their computer is the most important computer on the network. The management expects me to make sure your little driver coding or whatever other crap you are working on in VB doesn't F*** up the accounting dept or the sales group...etc.
Work our side for a while, and you'll see how flawed that comment is.
When I have to let someone do stupid things on a machine we put this big barrier all the way around the machine sort of like the anti-virus people do when testing a virus's capabilities. You are the type that would probably bitch about that wall too, but as the person you are replying to said, when the network gets F***ed up because you HAD TO HAVE YOUR ADMIN PRIVS and the accounting/sales/other depts can't do their work, it's MY ass.
Actually for computers you get 1 year and then get applecare. It's well worth it though. Applecare doesn't screw around with you and they speak proper English.
The funny part of this one for me is when you have a V.P of your company that has your product and needs help and you don't have anyone with a Clue to help them. Watch your manager squirm then.
If anyone is in this position, suggest to your upper management to call the support line and try to get help with something.
Having just read 1984 again since it is bandied about so dang often, I'd have to agree the Orwellian aspect of the situation isn't there.
Don't just use the phrase and assume you know what it means. (I'm not referring to Cpt Albert, but the Orwell comment) Read the book Michael.
Tech Support managers that emphasize low call volume is where any industry should go to research bad examples of "Management"
Take a subjective topic like anything someone would call for technical support and try to apply "METRICS" to it to be able to grade employees. So it's my fault if the customer is a moron and I still want/try to help them? No thanks.
My mother asked me about the new iTunes service, and whether she could get songs and put them on an MP3 player to use when working out, instead of her old tape player. She played with iTunes and found all sorts of music she liked on their store. When I had to explain that she would have to get an iPod because you can't download real MP3s, only Apple's own format from iTunes, she asked "Why not?" I explained that the files are protected against "copying" with restrictions that make it difficult to get MP3s from them, so you have to burn the songs to CD, then rip the MP3s
Why don't you tell your mom the truth?
1. The.99c goes to the music company, the internet company, and a small small piece to pay some apple staff. 2. The only profit Apple makes is off the iPods. Tell mom buying an iPod is how to thank Apple for going out on a limb for us. Downloading.99c music is just feeding the music pigs.
Being a sysadmin, I believe his goal with that comment is:
I am evaluated on how well the system performs, not how well or fast you develop code.
It doesn't make sense to make management evaluate me based on how fast you deliver code.
Good sysadmins know that they are responsible to the users and keep that in mind, but management wants me to keep the system running well and evaluates me from that perspective.
Hope that helps, since I agree with the parent on all the rest.
We don't want to lose you as windows customers, so boot Linux and play all you want. We know that Linux is difficult to do simple tasks for the Average Joe.
Now, try and install Virtual PC on a Mac to run windows. Different story. Or Linux on 10.x or... or.
They won't hurt the ability to play with operating systems from the safety of the windows environment. It was a safe haven for Mac users to run some windows apps though.
TiPB with VPC6 purchased the day microsoft announced the buy out.
I am a sysadmin for an ISP in NYC and I know one other ISP's sysadmin up here has a Mac laptop as well.
It's hard to beat built in FreeBSD on a 15" display that is so thin.
The display for the price sold me on my laptop. You couldn't buy a PC laptop with 15" display and DVD/CD-R capability for what I paid for this refreshed (apple's term for refurbished) laptop.
They also threw in a gig of ram which makes a world of difference in OS X.
I stopped using my desktop and totally switched to my Mac at work. Most of my work is in terminal though.
For those that have to connect to a windows network, the built in samba is hard to beat.
I bought mine at the apple store but Smalldog is has a good refurb selection if you don't have an apple store near you. Dealmac is where I found smalldog and has a lot of other good links as well.
The military is not a democracy. It protects a democracy. Imagine if your PHB made all the decisions without input from you. Imagine if your CEO/COO made all of the software purchases in a large company. The people who run and maintain servers in the military, report to people who report to people...who finally decide what software to buy. The overpriced hammer is a result of the managment model required for them to be able to do some of the things they are asked to do.
Someone made a joke about RTFM. You apparently have never been involved with the military.:-) They have more than any company I have ever seen has in the way of FM's.
They say don't require GPL. I think for free software to get in there allowing GPL is the start. Requiring GPL is just as unfair as requiring Microsoft products.
I know I'm posting this late. Either the article changed, or you guys missed it:
Nothing in the article says the Dell printers will be the Lexmark printers that require Lexmark only carts. They say Dell will prompt you to go to their web page to order, but specifically say:
" The Dell printers are not based on any of the Lexmark models that are part of that lawsuit, a Dell spokesperson said."
Read the article again, and try to find where they say the Dell printers are these cartridge discriminators.
1) Because carrying two computers is impractical if you have a laptop, and PC work is impossible without VPC if you are a mobile Mac. Granted.
2) Because transferring data between Macs and PCs, despite Mac OS X, can still be a pain. VPC makes it easy to read files without great pains if you have the software. OS 10.2 has full smb support. Apple is even keeping it up to date when security issues come out. I mounted my windows machine on the mac and the mac on the windows machine yesterday. Piece of cake.
3) Because some people need an environment where they can test matters without forking over additional cash. As the article you are replying to pointed out you can normally get a cheap windows box for less than the $200+ price tag of VPC 6. If you are pirating VPC 6 then that is a different matter altogether.
4) Cables suck. KVMs work, but suck. Multiple keyboards suck. Multiple anything with computers generally suck. Use digital KVM's instead of analog. You can buy used monitors for less than most KVM's if space is not an issue. Most KVM's do suck though.:-)
5) VPC is a true clone. Every single copy is identical. It's a perfect environment for general testing. You can't get that from any store-bought or homebrew PC. Each will have slightly different parts. Having a second machine for about the same cost as VPC is the real thing. Why pay for a clone when you can have the real thing at your disposal. (...and I don't even like windows.)
6) VPC is the best way to connect to Windows resources and applications that are steadfastly Windows-only. As opposed to say a windows machine?
7) Respectfully speaking, most people that use VPC don't do the same things you do. Extending the same respect, Clones are never exactly the real thing. Use a tip from the WINE group: When you need a windows machine to do something only allowed in windows, get a windows machine.
