Ok, I know the details of the MS Resolver not doing queries to the nameserver correctly...and I understand the motivation for wanting to make a cleaner healthier internet. I even accept that maintaining the root nameservers isn't necessarily (to my knowledge) directly rewarded monetarily.

When do we get to the point that the root nameservers accept their place on the internet as the starting point for looking up people. This is similar to 411 or a phone book. How many times have you looked up a phone number to find out it was an unlisted or wrong city number.

I agree with them that code should be cleaner and traffic should be cleaned up, but a lot of the reporting coming off of these articles tend to sound like whining.

I don't blame the researchers, or the root nameserver maintainers for this. It's just something to keep in mind.I have to deal with spammers and open relays most days. It's my job! I signed up for it.

Nagios is really nice. I've used it at 2 ISP's now and it is amazing how fast you can deploy it and how reliable you can make it. The plugin design makes it expandable beyond belief, and you can fine tune it to where it is much more reliable and quicker than a tech support phone call at 3 AM (...something is broke. We don't know what...but...)

Ethan has always been cool about responding to feature requests and reasonable questions about nagios from what I've seen.

For the people who mailed the mailing list and didn't get a reply though, standard mailing list rules apply:

    1. No one is required to help you. (this program is free)

    2. If you don't submit enough information to help you, the list doesn't have to ask you to clarify. (silence may be your indication)

    3. Did you read the documentation? Did you reread it? Did you understand it? If the answer to any of those is no, you might not get a reply.

    4. Are you asking something that is truely unique to your situation? Most times this means it is something you are tasked to come up with. The list isn't required to do your job for you. If the request is from out in left field and doesn't affect a mass group, your chances of getting a reply are slim.

For the last one in particular I would like to add that our job as sysadmins (even if you are not paid for it) is to come up with (read: create) solutions. Don't get frustrated if someone else doesn't hand you a solution on a silver platter. You signed up for the job.

    1. There is no substitute for a degree to get an interview. CSCI is a plus but get a degree. I always reccomend Bachelors of Business Administration or MBA if you can stomach the crap they will teach you long enough to get the paper.

  24. NV7m/SocketA good upgrade board but be ready... on Socket-A Chipset Roundup · · Score: 1

I can easily comment on this, as I just got my AthlonXP 1600+ in yesterday and dropped it in to my brand new Abit NV7m which has the built on GeForce 2 and the Nvidia motherboard chip.

A friend of mine had a kt133a chip with his athlon and he had the problems of SB Live + kt133 not working all the time. This motivated me to go out on a limb and try the nvidia route.

For anyone who has been holding off on upgrades for a while like I did though, the purchase of the NV7m with the built on Geforce 2 (running at 6x agp!! according to abit) was a nice upgrade from my withering Voodoo 3 3k. $140ish + s&h for vid card and MB isn't bad since the competition is about the same price. I'm still installing stuff to test the on board video card. I was surprised not many hardware sites reviewed it, and there's very little (in english) on Deja-Google about the nv7m good or bad.

Of special note on this, the motherboard Geforce 2 on the abit board only has Win 2k and Win XP drivers, which sucked, because I wasn't ready to abandon 98SE yet as my gaming machine. Oh well, it was time. :-)

  25. Just a thought on McOwen Case Settled · · Score: 1

Isn't it time we realize that more lawsuits are coming soon. This is how we grow a profession as a society. For example, do you think Doctors aren't sued most of the time? A lot of the quirks medical professionals have to go through are to prevent legal action against them. I can already hear the "but they deal with lives" arguement, but it's a developed profession. I think we could all learn to chill on how many lawsuits we file. Be prepared for system administration to turn into a bunch of red tape saying exactly what we are allowed to do and how we are to do it. This is a good thing in some ways. It means our field is maturing even more.

    I'll shut up now. :-)
