Think of all the copies of OpenOffice.org and GNU Linux that are drifting around the world!!

Microsoft cannot sue OpenOffice, because that's where they originally STOLE the source for MS Office. Back in the early 1990's there was a little German compay that created Star Office and released it as Open Source. MS took that code and created Office. So if anyone needs to get sued here, it's Microsoft.
  2. Vista not ready for prime time on Mom Blasts Ballmer Over Kid's Vista Experience · · Score: 1

My son just bought a new HP Notebook which, of course, came with Vista installed. It looks "pretty" and yes there is a lot you can potentially do with it. However, the main reason he bought the HP high end notebook was so he could install Call Of Duty and some other FPS games. COD worked for a couple of hours and then he installed the WinTV that came with the system - BOOM! COD stopped working. Uninstalling WinTV didn't work (we had to call HP Support to even figure out how to uninstall WinTV) because by then the damage had been done. Re-installing COD didn't work either.

We tried installing XP, but none of the drivers HP told us to download worked with the new hardware. So, we are back to restoring Vista. It really sucks.

If you want an GUI that looks "pretty", then by all means get Vista. If you want a gaming computer that will actually work for you, stick with XP or Windows Server 2K3.

  6. Re:Created by Microsoft on WGA Meltdown Blamed On Human Error · · Score: 1

I'm a fairly honest person and when WGA came out, I said, sure, I'll install this on my systems because they are all legitimate. Well, it broke the first one so seriously that I had to re-install Windows. After that, NO WGA FOR ME! Sorry, Micro$oft, I'll play your silly games as long as it doesn't interfere with my abilities to get work done.

I have used cracks for legitimate software primarily as a means of protecting the CD. Otherwise, if something happens to the CD I can't use the software any more. I'm sure the software vendor will be more than happy to send me a new copy of the CD immediately so I can continue to work... Oops, wrong utopian world.

Here's an idea! In the gaming world, you need to enter the CD key to get the game to install. Once it is installed, you need a valid key to play online. Now, keys can be generated that work, but let's take it one step farther. After installing the key, you register it with the vendor (no personal information, just the key). If you upgrade your hardware, you'll need to re-register, but that can easily be done without re-installing the software, which you would probably do anyway if you are upgrading the entire platform. Again, no big deal.

If you try to register a cracked key, the vendor will know that it is no good because it isn't the database of keys that were shipped. A pop-up window appears: There will be a knock on your door short while. Please have your computer and software ready for confiscation. Busted. If, as in gaming, they want to have the key verified online every time you use it, no problem, I can live with that.

Actually if you study the bible very closely the earth as created by God has been around just over 12,000 years. A day is 1,000 years to God, so the first 7 days in Genesis is really 7,000 years. We have a little over 5,000 years of recorded history, so 7000 + 5000 = 12,000.

Many scams and doubtful business methods (including, btw. many insurances) only work because the general public is frighteningly uneducated in math, for example, and can't do even simple statistics. Buy this maintenance plan for your home heating system and we'll come out twice a year to check, clean and repair any damage. It only costs you $500 a year - great bargin.

If you have an older system, it might make sense, but do the math first:

    • $90/visit * 2 = $180.00
    • Difference = $500 - $180 = $320
    • Put that $320 in a special savings account and in 10 years you can buy a new unit or as maintenance costs go up, use that account to pay for the parts and labor AND get a little interest along the way and still have money left over.

I had the Lazik+ surgery about 3 years ago and it was absolutely the best thing I have ever done. I understand it isn't for everyone and some people have apprehensions about what is being done to the cornea, but the benefits certain out weighted those concerns in my case. I also had a mild form of astigmatism which can be eliminated though the use of laser surgery. Even the best eye glasses in the world couldn't completely correct it. And contacts were not doing a good job either. My eye sight was pretty bad and even the lightest plastic lenses were heavy and by the end of the day were starting to cause some discomfort. I wore contacts since 1966 and towards the end they were becoming a pain to use too.

Getting up in the morning and being able to see the clock across the room is great! I don't get involved in a lot of sports, but not having to wear glasses or contacts when playing sports is a definite plus.

It is a surgical procedure and there can be consequences. If you have concerns then the best approach would be to have one eye done at a time with a 3 month gap in between. If you are absolutely paranoid, then it's probably best that you don't have the procedure.
