    Like everyone else I went ahead and used third party code and libraries to accelerate the development of my various sites. Everything went as well as possible I guess, until one of my sites was defaced one day. Not because of my code (though by no means I'm pretending my code is perfect, far from it), but because one of these libraries had a security vulnerability and they didn't even have a security mailing list. That vulnerability was big enough that it would show in about every single site that would use this particular library, and was of course exploited very quickly by all the script kiddies in the world (I still see it being scanned automatically from time to time, years later).
    Lesson learned, I don't ever use any 3rd party code unless there is a announcement security mailing list anywhere on their site, and even then I'd rather do the code myself if possible. Not because it will be perfect, but because at least my site won't be vulnerable to an automated attack targeting a 3rd party thing I put in their and totally forgot about.

    And of course, don't get me started on phpBB and stuff like that, using such apps a few years ago was either having open doors for hackers, or a nightmare of patching.

    It depends on who will issue the certificate. Serious companies like Network Solution, Thawte or even Godaddy will send a validation email to the owner of the domain (if it's listed in the whois data) or require you to create a new file on the web site or a DNS CNAME to prove that you have admin right on the domain. It's a bit of a pain in the ass when you are registering SSL certs for a third party partner, but it's rather safe.
    Some SSL companies though will simply ask you to provide an email for that domain and send a validation link to that email. So you could create ssladmin@hotmail.com and they would happily create you a perfectly valid SSL certificate for hotmail.com you could use for man in the middle attacks.

    There is actually an effort to port Android 2.01 to the Touch Pro 2 (and most other Windows Mobile 6.X devices from HTC). Wifi, GPS and other niceties like this are lower priority, but since they already work on other HTC phones it's only a matter of days or at worse weeks.
    It's really exciting to see this maturing, even though the latest homebrew roms running Winmobile 6.5.3 and the latest HTC Sense interface are surprisingly fast, stable and usable.

    I of course first tried the open source solutions, and boy was that a nightmare. First Xen, on a DRBD+OCFS2+Heartbeat environment. Never managed to get it to be stable, got either kernel panic from OCFS after some time, or the servers would hang when doing live migrations. Also tried the iSCSI way, and still no way to stabilize the thing.
    Then since I though the issue was with the only officially supported Xen kernel (2.6.18) I tried KVM since it's integrated into the mainline kernel. Well surprise, I got more or less the exact same result. Kernel panic when trying the migrate a VM...
    So I gave ESX a try, not really believing it would be any better. Well, it actually works, but while it was easier to set up than KVM/Xen for HA and stuff like that, it sure wasn't trivial either. I spent a lot of time on google researching the various issues I was having (who would think that you HAVE to use the names of the machines and not their IPs when setting up the HA stuff?), but at least I got it to work. This certainly seems to be a very nice software, but the main issue with using webcams as input devices is the latency. You can even see the latency in their video at around 1:30 when they have the players and the PC screen in the same frame.
    Nice for simple games I guess, but for serious gaming it would require special cameras with low latency.

  16. I've got some experience in this (quite a lot) on Streaming MP3 For Linux Server Guide · · Score: 2

    Ok guys, I'm the webmaster of a french webradio (http://www.bide-et-musique.com). Since the last 6 months I've been batteling with all the programs I found to make a good webradio under linux.

    This was really really hard getting something good.

    First I tried icecast, as an open source believer this was my first choice. Believe me I've tried everything, but this is a lot of trouble if you want to stream the name of the song too. The main problem is that if the listener gets out of sync, he won't be able to reconnect correctly automatically. This is VERY VERY annoying and makes icecast practically unusable on my setup. Perhaps I did something wrong, but I never had an answer to my pledges for help to the authors.

    So I'm stuck using shoutcasts server, and believe me this is really sad for me, because some of icecast features where relly nice for me, like multiple streams in the same server.

    Ok after the server you'll want to have some interactivity with the listener, this is where the stream program shows. I was not satisfied with what I found on the net (and I tried everything). So I ended up using libshout, which is GREAT, really. You've got like 5 functions, and it works incredibly good. My streams are up now since 3 weeks, with no problems, no mem leaks, no nothing.

    So for me a good setup for interactive streaming is : shoutcast (unless icecast is fixed, then icecast is 100% the best choice), libshout and some little programming skill, a database for the streaming program to get the files from and of course a nice web site. Those understanding french will see that my site is really interactive.

    Of course you'll have to pay RIAA/ SACEM (france)/ whatever hellish company if your country, but that's another story 8(

  17. First look on Corel Linux on New Mozilla, Corel, and Napster Releases · · Score: 5

    I installed corel linux from the iso yesterday evening (european time).

    The installation is quite good. It automatically detected all my hardware (ok I've got a simple machine : voodoo banshee, ne2000 pci clone ide hd). Then the graphical installer asked me for a user login name, good point. After that I had to choose between some premade configurations, like destop/server/custom). I choosed custom. With this option I had the possibility to choose to install any package of the distribution. I choosed almost all of them and went to the next step.

    Now I had to choose on what partition I wanted to install, an ext2 one or a windows/dos partion. Good choice for beginners. Of course I installed on an ext2 one. The graphical fdisk is good and easy to use, but it seemed a little buggy for the free space calculation (eg it said 125 meg free but I could only create a 110 meg swap partition).

    After that is the rather long and boring package installation. No problem with it except the mouse cursor was rather slow and jumpy during this process , not good for a first timer thinking linux is a true multitasking os (I know it is, it must be because the installation is using the framebuffer I think).

    Then I was asked to reboot, no question asked about the boot loader or anything else, bad point here.

    After the reboot, quite a shock, the OS loader is not LILO but a rather nice graphical (320x200) menu with an animated disk on the lower right corner. I can choose between corel linux and some expert/safe mode. I can also choose windows and dos. This is good for non linux users, but I have 4 different linux installs at home for testing and of course none were found so I had to reinstall lilo (I'm pretty sure I could have changed the configuration of the boot manager but I had no time for it).

    The first time I choosed corel linux, and this was quite a shock : No boot messages ! The OS loader stays "on top" of the text and I did not find the way to get rid of it (of course choosing expert mode won't show this screen). This is very windowish and a rather bad point for any serious linux user. A rather strange thing is that the first time it booted, it fscked the partition so it took a loooong time and I had no idea what was happening (the loader writes some text like loading linux/check partitions and so on).

    then kdm was launched. A rather standard kdm, ala NT. I was able to choose between root and the user I had created. I logged in as a normal user to get on a almost standard KDE screen, with some new icons.

    There are of course some great novelties, like the file manager, windows share browsers and other great program but everything looks so muck like windows that it made me want to puke. I know KDE is really windows like, but with the corel extensions they took this idea to the extreme. You can even share a directoy by clicking on properties in the context menu, exactly like NT !

    Of course it's rather impressive and nice for a former windows user but I think some originality would have been a good idea.

    Here is the worst point : I did not find a way to configure my french keyboard "globally" for the console and X. The only way I found was to choose an international keyboard for each user I created. Really bad point here corel.
    One other thing to note is that there is no translation in the things corel added to kde so it's one other bad point. It's really strange to get windows half in franch half in english. They should have killed all other langages so no one would have complained.

    So even if corel did an incredible job developping some excellent tools and programs, I think the distribution is way too windows like and not for non english people. Too bad, hopefully this will be corrected in 1.1 !

    In conclusion if you are already a linux user, this is not for you. But for a windows user this may be a good way to start using linux.

    Btw a friend of mine was not even able to start the installation, it simply rebooted at the hardware check.

  18. PHP4 is simply great ! on Future of PHP Revealed · · Score: 4

    I'm a long time PHP developper (since early PHP2) and I simply love this language since the beginning. Like they said in the interview, the syntax is really clear and simple so it's really easy for anyone to read someone else's code and start modifying it. Anybody tried reading the (outdated) slashdot source code lately ?

    I really like perl for some of it's strenghts but unless you have a LOT of experience with it it's really hard to modify a big project written with it (from my own experience).

    The C like syntax of PHP is really neat, well thought and emacs (vim also) works like a charm with it.

    One of the biggest improvement of PHP4 is the speed, it's really impressive. I'm working on a rather complex site, and a single page took .4 seconds to generate with PHP3, and now only .17 seconds with PHP4. It will be even better when we will be able to preprocess the files (ala java). See http://www.zend.com for some benchmarks.

    Lately a java module for PHP4 has landed in the cvs. At first I wondered why they did such a thing, but take a look at this code :

    $InetAddress = new Java("java.net.InetAddress");
    $localhost = $InetAddress->getByName("www.yahoo.com");
    $addr = $localhost->hostAddress;

    Basically it does a simple nslookup on www.yahoo.com, but uses a java class to do it. Isn't it amazingly easy to use ? Think about what you will be able to do with this extension ! And of course it can use a lot of JVM (Kaffe, IBM JDK 1.1.8 for linux, sun JDK 1.2.2 for NT and others).

    Any serious web developper should give PHP4 beta2 or the soon to be released beta3 and experiment a bit with it. I can understand someone not liking it, but I certainly can't understand someone not liking it without at least trying to use it !

    For example with PHP you can generate on-the-fly gifs, but also on-the-fly pdf files ! With database integration think about all the possibilities you have. I'm working (among other things) on a FULL template system which not only allow you to change the HTML of a page, but also all the images/buttons, without having to recreate them all. You can use true type and postscript type 1 fonts in you gifs. The only problem with the generated gifs is that they are RLE compressed so I pipe them to gifsicle and I get a maximum compressed file.

    Btw do not compare IIS with PHP. IIS is a web server, PHP a scripting langage for apache (and CGI). If you want to compare, go with ASP. There are many pages comparing ASP/Perl/PHP. I hate ASP so I won't speak about it. I'm a C developper so for me PHP with its C syntax is a dream (no mallocs !). Perl is not structured enough for my liking.
