My wife has a prescription for an ADD medication that helps keep her awake. She has to take a drug test to make sure she is actually using it, can't have those addicts being productive now can we. Imagine a cocktail of these, probably something like dividing by zero.
I recently had a meal at a popular buffet in Orland. I did notice the plates were much smaller than in years past. That didn't stop to couple at the table next to me from making a third trip and then leavening their plates full of food when they left. People who have multi terabyte drives full of downloaded movies they never watch are the same way.

She didn't get any better so either it was ineffective or she was getting the placebo. For participating in the study she was given prescription to an already approved drug.
For her this drug is almost perfect. She can stick to her diet and has lost 50 lbs. She no longer spaces out, has more energy and can study for hours at a time, (she is preparing to enter nursing school). Maybe many people can't use this drug or the patent is expiring. My wife is 47 and until this trial no doctor would help her so we were helped anyway.
It is good for the oil and gas industry, and those who work in them. My nephew with his new EE degree just started with a pipeline company in San Antonio, $90000 a year with a housing allowance.

One man with a truck can deliver a twenty ton load almost anywhere in the nation in less than a week. Imaging the logistics for shipping half a boxcar away from the main line.

In the nineteenth century towns and farms by necessity grew near the tracks but the our system of interstates and state highways has allowed the population to spread out and still have all our necessitates delivered to our door. Of course I have my own loading dock on my farm, I may be prejudice. Growing a perishable crop, no way could I depend on a monolithic rail system to safely delivery my produce. One call to a truck broker and I can have ten trucks in my lot at five AM willing to go anywhere in the county and guarantee safe delivery.
For myself I am building props for an event ninety miles away. I can rent a truck and delivery them myself in two hours. Hide in a subway if you want, I'll take the open road.
Many things are not economic if they are not subsidized in some way. Our country has it's own society. What helps one part of society helps us all (yes, socialism). My community helps me; libraries, law enforcement and open emergency rooms are just a few things provided my my community ( COMMUNISM !!!). My truckload of Omaha beef is subsidized by vegetarians who pay road taxes. Their load of tofu is subsidized by me, it equalized out.

Now with small room units and extra insulation in my white painted roof I still use 1800. Best I do in the cool months is 1300. Five people in the house and some of them love long, hot showers.

Imports already cost more the domestic cars but by making imports more expensive the moderatly well off would have bought from Detroit because a Ford or Dodge would have been more affordable. If you want to call increased sales a subsidy OK but all those $trillions sent to Japan and now Korea would have done a lot of good in UAW members pockets. Then we have most other American workers subsidized because of HB-1 visas limit the number of tech workers that are allowed in (imported).
Why do most people love cheap (or higher perceived quality) imported goods but balk at having the foreign workers themselves imported.
Actually, yes, during the severe electrical storm yesterday my lights only flickered a couple of times. All the tree trimming and lighting arrestors Florida Power and Light has installed since the 05 hurricanes has helped a lot. Even with these cost and the retiring of one of their nuclear plants my cost per kWh has only gone up a few percent to $.10. Improving service without raising cost does generate good will. Next time they need a rate increase they wont have much getting one.
You have to sure only citizens are eligible. Super sealed borders will be necessary because who wants to look at all those sad faced immigrants who aren't getting free stuff. Many jobs will only be fill by coercion, cleaning septic tanks is not very challenging, I do know that. Now putting them in an area with a high water table is very challenging. Digging the hole big enough and getting the tank dropped in before hole fills with water and the sides start collapsing is intense.

Actually stopping climate change means going back to an 1800's lifestyle for 99% of the worlds population. The few who live that now desperately want out and the rest of aren't going back unless we have to.
Even people who sincerely believe their lifestyle is killing the planet only make token changes. Only a world wide authoritarian government with firing squads for those who resist has any chance of working. Better make a lot of pop corn, it's going to be quite a show.
