improvisation is a whole different ballgame, and well worth respect when done well. (and a simple framework gives the performer a lot more freedom to express) But good improvisation does something interesting with that simple framework.
A simple framework can produce complex or interesting music traditionally as well. Look at Ravel's Bolero. It's the same phrase repeated over and over again, but what makes it interesting is how he uses different instrumentations and voicings for each repetition.
Is it possible to write good music using simple harmony/chord structures? Sure. Is some 'guitarist' jamming whole note open fifths (sorry, "power chords") with lots of distortion for 3 minutes good music? No.
Most pop music is artistically equivalent to "See Spot Run". Using the most basic vocabulary and structure because anything deeper would be lost on the listener.
When was the last time you heard a song on the radio that wasn't in four with 16 count phrases throughout? How about something with counter-melody or counterpoint? Perhaps some tonality more complex than the I IV V progression we've had since the Renaissance?
You're forgetting the fact that the majority of Americans are so musically ignorant, that they wouldn't know a good song if it jumped up and humped their face. They buy 3-chord songs because they can't wrap their heads around anything more complicated.
I did the same thing in Eve. Massive spreadsheets. I think MMO's lead to this behavior because their methematical basis is pretty obvious.
I always thought it would be neat to take the typical fantasy MMO idea, and completely mask the numbers from the player. Make all the progression notifiers indirect via roleplay elements. I think it would be cool, but I'm sure most MMO players would hate it, and prefer using a spreadsheet and DB to min/max their characters.
Likewise, they wouldn't want to have any real talent:)
Work ethic is worth a hell of a lot more than talent. Just about anyone can play an instrumet or sing, or dance, or whatever. Some people have talent and start out a little more proficient than others. That head start is worthless if they don't have the work ethic to do anything with it.
I hate to burst your bubble, but memorization is the way to play that game on the harder levels. You think a player doing Through the Fire and Flame on expert is actually reacting to what's coming down the fretboard? Hell no, they've worked on it enough that they already have all the patterns down to muscle memory.
From the perspective of 'real' musicians, memorization is very common. Just about anything I played in a concert was memorized. Sheet music was up for reference only. You're watching a conductor 90% of the time. Some instruments pretty much require it. Piano, for example.
I'm a classically trained Horn player. I also play Guitar Hero. I'm waiting for your head to explode at the concept that the two are not mutually exclusive.
How do you as a citizen know if some action is illegal. Most people manage to act lawfully without constant advice from lawyers. I'm sure soldiers are capable of the same thing.
Umm no. The speed isn't the issue, it's the accelleration. As long as that is kept within acceptable ranges for normal people, the top end doesn't matter.
Personally, I was going to sign up so I can set up a boot camp partition legitimately on my MacBook Pro. Use it every once in a while to see how a webpage loads in IE or something. Let them monitor that usage. Repeat for 3 months, then uninstall their monitoring software.
Interestingly, Apple doesn't seem to have the same qualms about $0.99 songs.
If you only purchase a song or two, Apple will hold billing for a few days, hoping you purchase more. I've had transactions sit for a week before processing.
Blizzard codes games from the ground up for cross platform. CCP didn't. I prefer Blizzards methodology, but even I can understand that CCP CANNOT do the same thing without a fundamental rewrite of their graphics engine. They chose to use DirectX. Because of this, they are completely reliant on a 3rd party reverse-engineering DirectX to get it on other platforms. Until Transgaming figures it out, there isn't a damn thing CCP can do about it.
It's their fault for choosing DX in the first place though.
Yeah, but there are far fewer pilots than there are drivers. I can't imagine if my daily commute was airborne...
Hah! I had that game back in 1997 I think. Lost it tho...
My only gripe with SMG? I still hate underwater levels. For some reason I turn into a retarded child trying to control mario underwater.
The various side-scrolling elements they worked in were absolutely brilliant, however.
I IV V works as a basis for a piece. But you use more than that to transition between them. When that's all there is, it gets old really fast.

And I'd totally agree with that. But it doesn't happen often enough nowadays.

Just as long as it isn't buxom models with beanbags...
It's a copy/paste troll. You'll see that post in just about every story here.

I havn't played E2 yet, but it sounds like they pulled another Xen.

The fact that you needed to pull out something so trivial simply reinforces my point. Thank you.
You are also not trained as soldiers are. Your point?

Insightful my ass...

I have yet to work at an office running anything other than IE6. I bet that impacts the metric quite a bit.

As has been stated before, the 8-3 workday and 3 months vacation is bullshit.
My middle and high school band directors pulled 11-12 hour days constantly. 6-5 or 6-6 usually.
