    An interesting note on how McAfee was busted:

    To promote its exclusive access, VICE published a smartphone picture of McAfee with reporter Rocco Castoro. That was a big mistake.

    Digitally embedded in the photo was the location where it was taken, and it placed McAfee in Guatemala -- just across the border from Belize. Now the world knew where John McAfee was hiding.

    Our customers use Linux and Solaris, and that's what I develop for. I have to do it from a crippled VM inside Windows 7 though, because our corporate policy is Windows Uber Alles. Every day I die a little on the inside.

    I think that's great, but the fact is, corporate culture is more invested in Microsoft than ever. Your corner of the world is an exception, not the trend. It's sad, but true.

    Sure, Linux / Solaris / BSD is big in Intertube servers, but that's a small fraction of what Big Bizz uses computing wise.

    Imagine "The Punisher" if all he did all day was talk to imaginary people, smoke meth, and collect jars of his own urine.

    If you're growing weed outside, saving your pee, letting it "age" a bit and then spreading it around keeps the deer and other weed-eating critters away from the plants.

    On the upside, maybe this sad state of affairs will finally get companies to stop treating McAfee's crapware as the be-all-end-all of computer security in the workplace (at the last place I worked, it was their ENTIRE security plan--just put McAfee on all the computers and that will handle all security issues).

    It's been quite a few years since McAfee sold his company, it's a good possibility that what we know now as McAfee Crapwear is not the same as the Original McAfee Crapwear...

    The problem here (and indeed the reason that most of /. passionately hates Facebook) is that the Neck Beards that frequent this Web site simply DON'T "socialize" and really have zero concept about this thing called "socializing" and what happens when you "socialize". The simple fact is that to most of the Neck Beards here, "socializing" means at most some Web cam action at some depraved "pr0n" site, preferably one that doesn't need a credit card - because Neck Beards are cheap.

    People have this strange idea that most Federal workers are making "bank" and that just isn't so. I also work my ass of to support the mission of the agency I work for (the Air Force) for the benefit of all Americans. When you work for the government, you work for the People.

    About my vacation. I said 5 weeks, but I started out with less than that. All the same, the United States is one of the FEW civilized countries in the world where most worker bees get so little vacation time, an almost INHUMAN 2 weeks?

    Seriously, what can you do in 2 fucking weeks?

    Yes, I know that all the right-wing Tea Baggers thing government workers should be happy with $10 an hour and 2 weeks a year, but you know what? They're "Tea Baggers" which mean they are also morons.

    15 years ago, I worked for a well known integrated chip manufacturer in Redmond Washington. They make very expensive power conditioning components for aerospace. It was my "dream job".

    I started work there as a Database Admin at a salary of well into the 80's with a teaser to move into the 90's, I thought that after years of grunt IT work, I'd hit it. I was 35 at the time.

    Well, of course there is a "and then it happened.." I got laid off.

    Long story short, at 35, and the "peak" of my "career", I found that employers wanted 20 to 25 year olds because they would do the same job, except at 60 hours a week, and for less money.

    So I went back to my military connections, and got a Civil Service job. I make less, but guess what? I have DECENT HEALTH CARE, and - here's the kicker - I GET 5 FUCKING WEEKS OF VACATION A YEAR.

    The biggest benefit is that some 20-something puke is not going to take my job.

    Sure, it's a lot of "crapwear". BUT, this is an OEM issue, not a MS / Win8 issue.

    Secondly, is this news? Not really, it's been this way for a LONG TIME.

    If you buy a system for which you don't intend on wiping and building up from zero, then you'll need to uninstall a lot of this crap. It's been this way for YEARS.

    And if you DO intend on running windows, ditch the factory install and cripple-wear reinstall CD that comes with it, and buy Win8 Pro so you have the actual full CD.

    None of this is news for OEM Windows systems.
