The write-up says that surveys say the UK public supports extending copyrights. But then he says in reference to the MPs refusing to extend copyrights: "Looks like the government is realizing that the public are the ones that vote 'em in or out."
It is a positive development. (Although I am no fan of
Ubuntu - because I am no fan of Gnome - or even of Kubuntu,
which I tried.)
I have a fantasy in which OpenSuse collapses and the Novell
BOD comes to its senses, fires Hovsepian, and repudiates
the deal with MS. I would love to see something like this
because I like Suse a lot.
Novell is feeling the backlash of their decision to cozy up to Microsoft, but this is just spin, it means nothing. The business arrangements that Novell made with Microsoft are what counts, and they still stand. It's time to deal Novell out of the Open Source pie, we must not allow them to taint Linux with "Microsoft IP".
It really bugs me that a lot of these hackers call themselves "security researchers". For the most part, they simply are not. Hacking into someone's network uninvited and posting some silly "hacked by" page is not security research. Illegal and annoying activities like this should not be classified as legitimate "security research". If I don't invite you to hack my network, you're nothing but a criminal, often a destructive one.
"Add"? Well, yes, in a way a Slashdot submission is an "add". Some wish that many of the Slashdot "adds" where actually "subtractions". It's a matter of taste.
Looks like the PS3's actual value is about $1.50 in plastic and metal. Nicely done.
People always bring this sort of thing up, but the value of the raw materials is almost never closely related to the actual production cost OR the retail cost. There is, for example design and manufacturing costs involved.
And, to some people "profit" is not a dirty word...
The company maintains dozens of Windows 98 desktops to support legacy software that cannot be easily replaced
It's really time to consider that while it may not be easy, it's time to hire some programmers and write that replacement. Really. Win98 support is going to get more and more difficult, to the point where it is no longer reasonable to support it at all. Will it be too late for your company when that time comes?
If Kumar was white, he would've walked. Instead, he gets thrown under the bus.
WorldCom's Bernie Ebbers isn't white? Ken Lay (Take off your tin foil hat, he's dead.) et al are not white? Former Tyoc CFO Mark Swartz isn't white? He's doing 8 and a half. Going way, way back, Robert Vesco is sort of white-ish. Terrence D. Chalk of CEO of Compulinx (see the Slashdot story yesterday) is white... Read the papers, and listen to the evening news, lot's of white guys are going to jail.
Ken Lay's family is drinking champagne and eating caviar, probably with Ken himself (anyone who believes he's really dead is an idiot)
This type of thinking assumes that *everyone* is plugged into their computers and the Interweb. But this just isn't so. There are and will always be large numbers of people that use the computer very little or not at all.
Also, if I had been doing something illegal and he found it, it would have been inadmissible since he was working on my laptop directly, not an imaged copy of my hard drive.
You think so, eh? In this day and age of warrentless searches and guilt by profile, you think that would make any difference at all? Why not manufacture some "documents" and give it a try?
The judge denied e360insight's motion to suspend the Spamhaus domain, but that doesn't mean the original ruling against Spamhaus was vacated. As far as I can tell, that still stands.
The Department of Defense has been issueing these "smart cards" for several years now. The various branches of the military have used them exclusivly for a few years.
Microsoft didn't "cave" to Universal. To "cave" implies resistance. Microsoft and Universal have always been on the same page.
Eliminating the dollar would simply provide an excuse to raise prices.
So, which is it?
Factoid: Microsoft owns the domains www. anti zune.com / net / org. But they do not own www.zune.com.

This is because the rich and famous seem to think everyone makes sex tapes...
What's next? EV1Servers announces a deal with Novell?
Remember nMap and SCO? SCOcrap doesn't come with nMap anymore.

For what it's worth (not much), both blackbox1.org and blackboxvoting.org are hosted at Rackspace...

Come on. Total bullshit. There is allmost certainly a ton of paperwork that goes along with every confiscation.
