  1. Me too on Microsoft To Announce Jerry Seinfeld Ads Cancelled · · Score: 4, Funny

I saw them too and I enjoyed them. Now give me some karma as well.

  2. Sounds like something I did on Software Backs Up Human Memory · · Score: 5, Funny

So if you're going to get the code just to look at it, I suggest using your mom's house or an internet cafe! Or if you know an avid Eve Online player that you don't really like, you could hack into their wireless connection and download it that way. Not that I would condone it...
  4. More sales? Are you sure? on Ballmer Suggests Linux Distros Will Soon Have to Pay Up · · Score: 1

    > So XP is definitely on the way out, and [...] Vista is coming in. That means more sales for MS

Not really. Every time they sell a copy Vista pre-loaded it means they are selling one less copy of XP. If my calculations are correct they should end up with the same number of sales overall.

  5. Running out of bandwidth on Firefox 3 Antiphishing Sends Your URLs To Google · · Score: 1

    > Also saves your bandwidth.

Ah yes, good point. The 1MB of URLs per month that will be sent to Google will really eat into my unlimited bandwidth. I'd better download the "small" file of known phishing sites instead. I can't imagine that there could be that many URLs on it. 640 scam sites should be enough for anyone.

  6. Privacy while at work? on New York Taxi Drivers To Strike Over GPS · · Score: 4, Insightful

I know when I work that the system administrators are watching what I am doing: checking which ports I have open, which websites I visit and maybe even sometimes reading my mail. It seems like this is normal these days. Good luck with the strike, but I doubt it will change anything.

That's been one thing that really bugs me about Linux. I'm fed up of having to use horrible outdated editors like emacs and vi. Now finally I can use a decent editor without having to dual-boot.

  9. We must be tough on all forms of piracy on How Pirated Software Impacts Free Software · · Score: 4, Funny

How should those people be handled? Is Piracy still piracy if it's the same version as what was there before?

    Yes, it's absolutely piracy.

We need to be more tough on pirates and terrorists. In the music industry we use fines of $100,000 per 5MB of illegal pirated contraband. This should be increased to $500,000 per 5MB for Windows because it is such an important piece of software. Since Windows is about 1 GB in size that means we should be fining them about a gajillion dollars per theft. If you have multiple pirated copies then we must treat it as a commercial operation, and then clearly we are talking about *much* larger numbers.

Once the fine has been paid the pirates should then be sentenced to death by hanging. This is a good way to prevent re-offending.

I know that some of you think this is a little harsh but we must remember what the world was like when we were too gentle with pirates and terrorists. Do you want events like 9/11 to become a regular occurrence?

  11. Wrong on $1.5B Fine Overturned For Microsoft · · Score: 1

    > Because they would have passed the cost on to consumers.

No, they wouldn't. Business aim to charge the most money that the customers are prepared to pay. If Microsoft are able to raise the price of their product and still sell it they would have done it already and made more money.

The extra cost from the fines would have cut into their profits and so it is the shareholders that would be harmed, not the end users.
