It seems so far Microsoft isn't really worrying over a fine of 1.5 million/day, this makes me wonder what amount of money is needed to make it an issue they want to comply with. Any ideas?
This would work: 1.5 million lines of Windows source code per day will be uncopyrighted (is that a word?) and effectively made Open Source in Europe each day until they comply.
I bet it would take them about 2 days to get all the documentation written under those conditions.
just imagine what such an action would do to their credit rating
Ohhh I never thought of that. It will be a really huge problem for Microsoft if they ever need to purchase some new company cars but the bank won't loan them the money...
Then don't. Clothes turn people into lower mamals. Though we don't have the insight right now, I bet in 50 years, we'll figured out why God didn't want you to wear clothes. All life exists for us to look at, and in some species will havve fur, or occasionally produce a viable hairy offsprring. Given life's penchant for procreation, the fact that god has said NO to people wearing clothes should be taken as an extremely stong hint that it just shouldn't be done.
Become nudist. There are tons of guys waiting for women who actually want to show off their body.
Just because we can, doesn't mean its right. Or smart.
I would wager that at some point, as BitTorrent, Inc. tries to clean up its image, that it will probably try to keep other file-sharing systems from using it's name and trademark
I'm not 100% sure of trademark law but I don't think you can take a word that is already in common usage and trademark it unless your trademark doesn't overlap with the existing usage of the word. In other words, you can't trademark the word 'Chair' if you are using it to sell chairs. If they want to trademark 'BitTorrent' it has to be in relation to a different product from the BitTorrent protocol.
It would have been OK if they had enforced the trademark from the start. It's too late now though. They will probably try it anyway in the hope that people will settle out of court rather than pay legal expenses.
If you are worried about losing data, you should wait until Firefox tells you that it is time to update, rather than risking a beta release candidate for which there is no support.
filled out 2 this morning I so hope other retailers follow this.
If you keep buying products because of the rebates, companies will keep offering them. If you want companies to stop buying rebates, you have to stop buying products with rebates, even if it means paying more. Companies don't read your comments on Slashdot, they look at their profits. The only way that companies will take notice is if their profit falls.
What's that you say? You don't want to have to pay more? You'd rather get it at the cheaper price even if it means filling out rebate forms? Then stop complaining about them and do the extra work involved. You don't get free stuff for nothing.
I am currently in the market for a new computer. I was going to buy a new computer back in January, but I waited for a price drop for the AMD X2 chip that I wanted. Then I learned that there was going to be a completely new socket AM2 coming out that will use DDR2 RAM. So I held off a little longer. Its six months later, and now I hear that there is another AMD chipset coming out in January with 4 cores, and a new Intel chip coming out in a month that trounces anything AMD has.
No matter how long you wait, as soon as you buy a computer it will begin its journey down from top-of-the-range to below entry-level.
Given that you know that this is going to happen, why bother waiting? Just get a computer that fulfills your needs now. If in 2 years time that PC is no longer good enough for you, then get it upgraded.
Who cares whether it is top-of-the-range or next best, as long as it is good enough for what you need?
Noone needs a cellphone. Humanity survived before we even invented them. We don't need cars either. We survived without cars. You're missing the point though.
Creating technology is a good thing and why we shouldn't we take advantage of it? It can be useful, fun or just interesting. If people want cellphones for whatever reason, why not? I can think of many reasons why having a cellphone is better than not having one. I don't see why people should have to justify it though. If someone else wants a cellphone they should be allowed to ahve one as long as they aren't breaking any laws, or in this case, school rules (such as turning them off during the classes).
The real question is are school administrators allowed to reading their pupils diaries? What if their diary is stored on their cellphone? Should we give up all our privacy for the 'thinkofthechildren' and 'terrorism' projects?
I say no. It's annoying that we are forced to use encryption to protect ourselves from our own authorities, but if that is what is required, so be it.
He has a farmhouse in the town of Kipling, Sask.? So...? Why stop now? If he could trade that for two red paperclips, doubling his original investment, I'd be impressed.
In what may be the crucial competitive stroke, Microsoft will also allow you to download from its store any song that you've purchased from Apple, unlocking users from iPod's vendor lock-in."
I thought most European governments were already working towards forcing Apple to open up its formats? Let's see who gets there first:
* Europe with the speed of democratic decision making or...
* Microsoft with err... whatever they've got.
Yeah obviously in 20 years time people are going to want to buy new players to play their *.drm files since by then it will be a legal requirement that all audio files use the *.drm format which iPods cannot play.
But I hardly think that iPod is going to disappear by Christmas time, which is what the title suggests!
(Sorry if I am misunderstanding something, I haven't read the summary yet.)

How will they cope?

Really? Try this program:

Warning: Don't try this if you don't want to risk your computer becoming completely unusable.
(The above program may contain an error...)
I bet $1 that online gambling will not be banned.

"They are going to need to do better than this"
Yes, it's called Firefox 3.0.
"What features would you like in your next generation browser?"
Extensions!
"Does Firefox 2.0 meet your needs?"
Yes!
"What would you like to see improved?"
Opera.
I've yet to see an end-user-directed advert for Linux in any medium.
Get Ubuntu for your desktop!
Ubuntu Linux - Linux for Human Beings.
There ya go, one Linux advert targetted specifically for you! I'm not expected a very high click-through rate thogh.
I'm bored already and I haven't even read the article yet. :(

What about "Think of the corporations. :(" ? Haven't you been brainwashed yet? It looks like they missed you out. Don't you have a TV?

Anonymous Coward has excellent karma? He must have hacked the system.
I would have voted for Vista...
:)
But now it looks like we will have to wait until 2007.
Yeah, yeah mod me Troll, I don't care this time!

I thought everybody knew this by now.
Viruses, Infections, Spyware, Trojans and Adware.
Nah, but faqir works.

Just to confirm my theory i decided to Google for "Windows is here to stay." and found this post at +5 insightful.
I assume that my comment was modded as flamebait because:
a) It's true (for at least a few years).
b) It's not pro-Microsoft.
If someone said 'Windows is here to stay' would that be flamebait too? Oh no wait, that only violates one of the two rules, so it's OK.
