While I am a major fan of all the amazing work Google has done and relesed for the web. I can't help feel that this ruling is correct. I understand that it could have serious impact on Google and their bottomline but it seems like its the right thing.
Trademarks are in place to protect the consumer. Not the trademark holder. They prevent some fly-by-night company from stamping their stuff with a brandname and selling it. Levi's jeans are a brandname and cheap knockoffs can not carry the Levi's name. This is a good thing for consumers.
In this case Google is selling the trademark to a competitor for ads. This does not serve the public well. If you search for Louis Vuiton (and I know/.'ers do) you should have every expectation that the ads are associated with that brand. This is not the case when Google sells the ad to a competitor.
I disappointed that Google is getting the set back but I really think its justified.
Not really true. The deal struck by Albright in 2000 was that the NK nuclear weapon program would be shut down and the US would build a nuclear power generating station. Then the US welched on the deal and did not build a plant (under direction from the new administration in the White House; Bush. They also took a much more hardline stance on NK. So the North Koreans resumed their actions.
The general belief (or the last I read, about a month ago) was that his mistriss (or wife, its not clear) passed away due to cancer and he is a serious funk and has refused public appearances. Nothing sinister, just an upset old man.
Interesting that your American (or at least Western) view is that the President is, of course, telling the truth and the Asian is a lunatic. This despite documented evidence of blatant and persistent lies from the president and his senior officials. The Asian dictator is routinely portrayed as a lunatic in th western media but they offer little in the way of evidence. It is almost always stated as a fait accompli.

Mapping Google Maps

· Score: 4, Interesting
Remember that Google purchased Keyhole a while back. They are a satellite imaging firm. I wonder (or hope) that somehow this technology could be merged with the excellent Google maps. Imagine a "See Photo" button once you have found the location of whatever it was you were looking for. Now that would be cool.
Remeber that Google bought Keyhole which is a sat imaging firm, IIRC. Maybe the next version will have a 'see photo' button. That would blow my socks off.
The Google guys are some clever. Its like they think through their work and make it work before releasing it. Once again a Google beta is better than the cometitions live app.
The coolest feature on the maps is the "Link to this page" button. While you can do similar things with Mapquest, the Google guys have realised linking to maps is very important. Just another piece of evidence of their forethought.
Overall, this is one of the cooler web apps I've seen in a while. Knowing that Google want to organise the 'world's info' they are sure to roll out maps for Europe, Asia and the rest of the world soon.
I wonder if somefday this will be linked up with the data thet got when they bought Keyhole. That was a sat imaging firm, IIRC. It would be pretty bitchin' if they had a "see photo" button on a subsequent release of this app.
While I was also surprised about FFXI, I think the charts are misleading without WoW and EQ2 numbers. In fact I would say they are near useless. there are estimates of over 750k worldwide subscribers for WoW.
As I cruise through some of the commens the bias here on/. seems to be negative towards this ruling. And I, for one, do not understand it.
Imagine a scenario where Google sells an AdWord subscription to Microsoft. The keywork they sell is "Linux". Thus, everytime someone does a search on Linux the top link will take them to a page extolling Windows and explaining how the TCO for Windows is considerably less than that of Linux. This is clearly not an acceptable practice. Google needs to use some discretion on who they sell this Adword subscriptions too. A generic noun (like handbag or Operating System) is fair game to anyone. But a trademark needs to be carefully considered.
Also, it seems to me that the comments with this story are tainted with ridiculous Anti-French/Anti-American polarization which is insane. This is a product of silly US Media punditry and should be held in check. Let's keep it to discussing the nature of Google's Adword program and its effects of Trademarks.
they think that the difference between Linux, Windows, and OSX are just GUI changes
You are 100% on target. I remember my Dad thought that the IT department got screwed with WinNT4 since it was clearly the same as Win95 which was way cheaper. It took me over an hour to explain it to him. He learned weel though and now he runs Firefox and OOo (albeit on a Win ME box, but that's because he's too cheap to buy another, when he does I''m going to try and make it a Mac)
So where are the Open Source Games Projects? Really, the OSS community has tackled massive projects like new kernels and a fantastic browswer. Why are there now OSS game prjects that could set up Linux games. Perhaps even make the 'Killer App' to promote migration.
I though that Google's algoritms were designed to prevent this type of crap. I know Google isn't the only search engine, but I believe it is the most used (isn't it?). Thus, these SEOs ought to have limited effect of ranking, should they not.
That part of the TFA about Eastwood seems a little weak to me. They said they refurbished their website and then began to get more sales. They attribute tht to search engines. Could it not also be because the new design was more conducive to customers needs and thereby increasing sales?
Somebody is clicking the ads. Cuz Google has made a shitload of money through that program.

Ignore the man behind the curtain!
What have they done that they are good again?
They released World of Warcraft.

Inadequate? Where else can you control the affections of scores of lesbians?

You're = you are. Look into it.
You're retarded.

As long as the ads are clearly marked as being adds for somebody else (as they are on Google)
Bullshit. Those ads are selling knock-off crap.
They don't charge Coke a fee to be in the store. They buy the Coke and sell it.
Technically it would be: Louis Vuiton (TM)
It's a trademark, not a copyright.
Let me guess....You're American.
Because they are making money of a trademark they don't own.
It's not complicated.
If Windows was like a car ....
Oh forget it. I tired too.......
Why should hopping on the 'Net and operating a computer be any different?
Because it can be. Easily. However there is no market pressure to do it. And that is retarded.
