  1. Re:I agree on Vista Vs. Gutsy Gibbon · · Score: 1

When my girlfriend got a new computer I went through the whole reinstalling XP from scratch process on her old computer so we could give it to a friend (so they had a completely clean installation). It wasn't difficult per se, but there were several issues. The main issue was that we have a WPA wireless network in our house and, after reinstalling XP, we couldn't connect to the network (since it wasn't until SP2 that XP supported WPA). This meant having to disable encryption on our router, downloading all the XP patches, and then re-enabling WPA.

Cluster them and use the MATLAB Distributed Computing Toolkit. It parallelizes many of the underlying linear algebra algorithms used in matlab (using SCALAPACK) to take advantage of as many cores as you let it. Its not perfect by any means (and if you try and use it in a multi-user environment like a computational grid it is an absolute pain in the ass) but it does significantly speed up many types of matlab computation. Check it out here.

Whilst this may be true in the US it is certainly not true in the UK. I have a massive choice of broadband providers (both ADSL and Cable) and, since the advent of Local Loop Unbundling, the different providers have a lot of autonomy over their services (they have their own network equipment in the telephone exchanges).

It already has though. My dad wanted to put one of Dido's albums on his ipod, but couldn't because of the drm (until we circumvented it - holding down the shift key or something).

Bet ya he wont check the cds he buys to make sure they're drm free from now on though. I think the real breaker for drm will be when the current generation of computers expires and people find out that suddenly their iTunes/Napster/Whatever_DRM_music_store tracks no longer play. Even then, assuming the stores make it (relatively) easy to retrieve purchased tracks i dont think your average consumer will care.

In the UK we have a monopolistic telco - BT. We also have a government watch-dog - ofcom - which has mandated that BT must offer the local loop to competitors such as bulldog, etc.

Whilst this initially progressed quite slowly it is now at the point where you can get cheap broadband with up to 16Meg connections with the added bonus of being able to choose alternative phone line suppliers too. In fact you can now get 24Meg connections (dependant on distance from the exchange and quality of the wire).

  13. MOD PARENT UP on What Should One Know to be Truly Computer Literate? · · Score: 1
Being able to program isn't something you need to be computer literate. The dictionary definition of literate is:
    1 a : EDUCATED, CULTURED b : able to read and write
2 a : versed in literature or creative writing : LITERARY b : LUCID, POLISHED c : having knowledge or competence
The main requirement (in my opinion) is that you should be able to sit down in front of a program/OS that you've never used before and work out how to use it at a basic level - save, create new file, change the desktop, or whatever. I would say that if you have that sort of knowledge that you can transfer from one situation to the next you can consider yourself computer literate.
