Heh, social engineering is a technique that essentially all humans are vulnerable to. Also, phone companies are actually one of the top targets of social engineering. That combination makes for a pretty high likelihood of peoples' phone-line-related data to be effectively public domain...
There isn't really much way to be "secure" against social engineering because it exploits the one system you can't secure - the human mind. I know people who do this sort of stuff (I don't mean theft though heh) for fun on a fairly regular basis and they can all screw with pretty much any person. It's really amazing how easily you can manipulate someone of any personality type, actually. heh.
The only people who I've found to be highly resistant to any sort of social engineering are the type of people who know how to do it as well. It requires a certain mindset to be able to catch on to when a person might be trying to manipulate you. Unfortunately that sort of mindset usually involves always having a certain amount of suspicion towards peoples' statements all the time...
"You could delete all the data from your laptop [to avoid being caught by police/authorities with this stuff on your system], but that's not good for you because the more data you have, the bigger your possibilities [are for breaking into various vehicles]"
It runs pretty crappily. The System Folder has a huge amount of files in it (at least compared to the usual amount in a typical Sys 7.5 or OS 8 System folder - now that I think of it it reminded me of a typical C:\WINDOWS directory).
One Copland release required two machines, one to run as a "server" and the end-user machine to run as a client, IIRC.
I was astonished that [the version I had] was ever released to anyone because it was so bug-ridden and painfully unstable.
However the OS 8 that was released was essentially identical in appearance, but far far better in terms of stability and minimal bugs.:)
It's a huge economy actually, and I'm pretty surprised you haven't heard about that before. There was quite a lot of news coverage about Chinese "gold farmers" in WoW not too long ago.
Games aren't always about escaping reality - in fact, they are often about experiencing some OTHER reality, which may very well have some very definite similarities to "our" reality.:)
They probably have some kind of exclusive deal with AT&T or whatever... which might make sense money wise, but I think we all know that Blizzard is just rolling in the dough so I'm not sure why they would do something like that..
From TFA: "Does OS X really offer any applications that would entice me to purchase a new Mac and put up with the tedium of Boot Camp? I doubt it."
This guy is just straight up trolling. Either that, or he's really short-sighted, or willfully ignorant or something.
People don't use Mac OS X because it has some kind of crazy-ass applications that somehow make it 5000x better than everything else. They use it because it works, it's intuitive, it's reliable, it's easy to use, and it looks damn good in the process!
Yeah, what "God" is going to want to sit around and come up with all these weird ass creatures all day long? Why not "write" a procedural "program" to design all that for you? Actually, this is starting to sound like that upcoming game Spore...
Or maybe I was just going by what the parent poster was saying... Sorry for assuming his description even remotely reflects reality in some manner or another.
Firefox is like a condom for the internet. If you're surfing around without, you're just asking to catch something.
Ouch dude, using my PC as it arrived from the store is "asking to catch something"?
I actually don't even know what kind of comment to make in response to that. I know you're right, but just the fact that I could go out and buy a new Windows machine right now, start using it, and get malicious software magically installed on my machine... it's unbelievable. It's pathetic, really. It is just amazing to me that the supposedly largest & most rich software company in the world can get away with that. It's amazing to me that such a company can be taken seriously when you can't even realistically use their product off the shelf.

Until all those 40-something white-collar workers retire and their kids who like Macs become the ones making the purchasing decisions.... :)
"Would have been smart to invest in anti-virus software on the system level before you did this Apple."
They did - it's called UNIX.
They are referring to Boot Camp: http://www.apple.com/macosx/bootcamp/
Yes, tons of people do this. Take a look at the following sites for some examples:
Ultima Online - http://www.uoemporium.com/
Anarchy Online, DaoC, EVE Online, EQ, FFXI, SWG, WoW etc - http://www.ige.com/

idunno, it strikes me somewhat as "selling out", but I'm not sure what the full story is.... heh
Oh, hey they'll probably get DEVO 2.0 to do it... Take a look: http://disney.go.com/disneyrecords/Song-Albums/dev o20/

Yup, here's a thread of the guy saying he was interviewed by CNN:

"Ambidextrous"? Whatever happened to "cross platform"? ...

Actually, it's interesting that they require sufficient "proof" that the theory is "correct".
Why?
A theory is, by definition, unproven. "An assumption based on limited information or knowledge; a conjecture."
Perhaps it would more accurately be called a humorous coincidence? Albeit fairly disappointing...
Was that on "The Current" with Anna-Maria Tremonti? heh... missed it this morning.....
Just bought the "F the RIAA" t-shirt, and a sticker with the same thing on it (which will make a very decent bumper sticker)! heheh... :)
Man, those Slashdot editors sure do let a lot of dupes through, eh? ;) hehehe...
