Partly, but they never could match Intel on process technology which meant Intel always had a cost advantage, even when their CPU designs were inferior.
But, mostly because Intel had anti-competitive agreements with major OEM's shutting out AMD.
Concur. I originally was going to post the word "this" in all caps with a bunch of exclamation marks. The filter told me that was like yelling. Well, yeah...
As an employer, do you think it's be easier to work around people who might have technology questions, or those who don't have a good grasp on basic math and English skills?
I find it amusing that so many people on Slashdot refer to others as "dumb" or "idiots" without bothering to get even a modicum of information regarding the specific story being discussed.
If only such foolishness were limited to Slashdot...
3D acceleration works, video playback works, I do not use audio over HDMI, and it is 64-bit Kubuntu that I am running.
I used to be an Nvidia bigot where Linux was concerned. My last couple builds have used ATI/AMD cards and I would say they work about as well as Nvidia these days, at least in my experience. I haven't done benchmarks to compare performance under Windows versus Linux. But, subjectively, 3D acceleration (the main reason I buy the cards) works fine under Linux, and my 5770 drives three monitors beautifully. YMMV...
I have a 5770 driving three monitors on Kubuntu and everything works as you would expect. Of course, I did have to pay an extra $100 for the active DisplayPort-to-DVI adapter...
As to Microsoft's documentation, I actually bought the Windows 95 Resource Kit, way back when. I remember how excited I was when I had a client with an issue that was specifically covered by it. You know what the Resource Kit told me to do? Uninstall and reinstall the printer. That's what I paid all that money for, to be told to "screw with it until it starts working."
Not at all. I thought I saw an opening to be funny and went for it. ;-)
I for one do not use social media, because it is a huge waste of time.
He said on /. ;-)
Well, have they tried producing security updates anywhere else besides a timely manor? Maybe they'd have better luck...

In Brewer's defense, she hasn't signed it, yet. Of course, I have no defense for what the legislature did in putting this thing on her desk...
I'd mod you up, if I could.
When you have a hardware problem on Windows, the hardware vendor(s) will usually work to help you. On Linux, you're usually on your own.
1) Discount previous post because of generalizations.

2) Make your own generalization.

How did you not get modded through the floor? The moderators must be AFK...
You won't get that on a stovetop.
You haven't seen my stovetop!

And, there is the core of the issue.
What did they hack???

This comment makes me wish I had mod points...
They weren't designed for use in the bathroom? Why else was the term "craptop" coined?
You wouldn't try to shit in an overflowing toilet, would you?
Depends on how bad I had to go...

You make an excellent point, sir. I'm surprised you weren't modded into oblivion for not towing the party line...
To those modding parent as flamebait: just because you disagree doesn't make it flamebait.

Google "full-wave bridge rectifier" if you didn't get it.
Oh, and of course, to post this, I have to type extra paragraphs because /. has a "lameness filter."
Doesn't look like it works, your post got through.
I KID, I KID! ;-)
