All should be open source. Source should never be hidden. It violates all ethos, it violates all truth, it violates my first GPL right to see the code!
I'm in the same situation: electronics retailer; with epic fail for vista being the common thread. I do wonder though if a lot of it was microsoft shooting itself in the foot. When vista was first released in january, most of the (Cheap/affordable) laptops we sold were running vista basic, and running it poorly on 512 ram, and a crappy video card. People got the impression that vista was crappy, and slow from those laptops. Certainly, its changed now, but that first impression has soured a lot of people, people who then talk to their brother, cousin, sister, (hopefully not all the same person:P). Perhaps vista would be more of a success if had been delayed and released now, on hardware that could allow people to appreciate it.
Flash fails worse than the blink tag. It feels like a system hacked on top of a system of broken systems. It's the single most frustrating "feature" to hit the web since the blink tag. To me, flash can be used in one of three ways, in decreasing amounts of popularity:
1) It provides a mechanism for young impressionable web designers to splatter their so called design spunk all over my screen in one gigantic wank-off-fest. Usually, resulting in pages that are so unusably bad, I can't begin to fathom how they were even passed by a blind retarded monkey, which should have said "FUCK OFF, you dumb twat, get a new pair of eyeballs!'
2) It provides a mechanism for young impressionable web programmers to splatter their so called programming spunk all over my processor in a gigantic waste of cycles, providing a service that's been done before, and done better by other plugins, by other desktop apps, by other non-retards.
3) It provides a mechanism for a few savants to create brilliant web pages, and applications by a minimal, or appropriate application of flash, in a way that is visually appealing, technologically sound, and generally couldn't be done better by something else, popularly available.
I see the first all the time. I'm forced to endure the second often, whenever a "COOL VIDEO" comes from friends, on youtube, and the third, I rarely notice.... because good design with flash fades into the background.
Of course, I'm not going to lie: I'm biased, because flash sucks gigantic testicles on the Mac.
Longer to index, or longer to search. Because I have to say, despite a few bugs (yes, I have had bugs), i'm staying with leopard for the blinding speed of leopard's spotlight index.
I suppose that's true enough; When I said native, I was thinking more along the lines of seeing games written in OpenGL or SDL, with the mac as a planned target, rather than a tacked on target. Now, I have no clue as to the quality of experience given by the games under Cider, but if it's good, I'm not adverse to the idea. I just haven't had the greatest of successes with wine, darwine etc. In general, right now, with gaming on the mac, i'd rather dual boot (of course.... that'd require new hardware. Don't think i'll be doing a ton of gaming on my macbook's GMA 950)
I suppose the real question is: HOw does it run. I'm really disappointed though that it keeps getting bandied about as a native port, when it clearly says it's not.
I do wonder if this is why the American attitude (In a gross... disgustingly gross exaggeration) seems relatively insular compared to many other countries. Too much naval gazing because you're already the centre of the universe.
I agree it was his best since Bowling, and I also agree about the gloss. I live under the Canadian health care system, and it sure as hell has it's problems. I think this movie's best point is going to be for the Americans who watch to realize that there are alternatives, and that "socialized health care" is not demonic.
I didnt think of that, being a student, but that's actually quite perfect. The Foleo is not without a niche, but they're going to have to work to sell it.
Education is the only market I see for this thing. It's too expensive for me as a general consumer, but it looks like it could possibly be a sweet note-taking machine, and I could see it running wild through universities and high schools (especially high schools if the districts invest).
As just a sampler of seeing NIN live, Open Source Resistance has a copy of a mini-concert that NIN put on as part of this year zero ARG. (You'll need to watch the raw footage though; the cut one doesn't have the whole concert) And I Agree with you; Impressive to see. I had a chance to see them when they came around a year or two ago, but ended up not going for a variety of reasons. I really regret that now. Here's hoping for a North American tour in late '07 or '08.
Surprisingly, they do. I see a large number of people (mainly in arts classes), who come in, whip out their palms and collapsable keyboards and start typing. I think if they keyboard was of sufficient quality, and the synching solution good, it might even be worth it too. I have to say, taking my laptop pretty much rules out me bringing a text without back problems.
I've learnt oodles about all OSs by breaking them. Delete something. see how it changes the behaviour of the system. If it was somethign really important, you'll learn about system recovery, otherwise, trouble shooting.
Month early much? Oi.
Pretty much what I was aiming for :P

Disclaimer: I use a mac.

... like etc. (DAMN HTML ENTITIES)
See. Now that's a tag syntax HTML 5 needs, none of this silly stuff.
It's always nice to have someone like that.
Jeeze. 5 pounds for my portable desk, plus five for my laptop. Might as well just find a freaking real desk.

Sure, so long as you don't want to actually do anything. (Other than solve a wonderful mystery in the future).
Only on the river Saskatchewan.

We care why? They're consolidating their badges, and increasing the type size on some. Whoopity fuck.
The article says nobody will say WHICH Chinese tech company wants to buy.

It's just too much for my little macbook, and the stuff I run regularly... Poor thing. Have to wait for the iMac to arrive.

I'm serious.
God rejects Sony.
Why have karma if you don't blow it sometimes.
