Kind of like all those users who practice "safe browsing" while connected to the Internet, and stop what they're doing when they realize they're in over their heads?
..yeah, it should. Alas, common sense and the common man oft conflict in the strangest ways.

I have a cousin who seemingly does this who forgot to renew his domain. So when e-mails start bouncing because my mother can't send mail to her relatives, who gets called in? Me. To summarize: do it right (ie, have a backup plan), or not at all.
I have to agree with you. Perhaps they need to include a little loop in the unit itself, as well as the stylus, so it can be attached by chain or string. Especially useful for children.:)
People who care about their own rights are going to not care about the rights of others, or a company, in this case?
I don't believe it. If they're going to pirate it, they're going to pirate it, but if they want to boycott it as a message to Blizzard that their rights mean something, they're not going to touch the thing with a 10 foot stick-- err, MB pipe.
Anyone using this as an excuse for copyright infringement obviously has no regard for rights to begin with.
We are mailing to inform you of an unfortunate incident that has occurred recently. Your friend, CowboyNeal, has been incarcerated for IP Infringement and/or Copyright Violations. Don't worry, though, he/she will be back out in 10-20 years.

Okay, so now we can have a pretty GUI FTP client from Firefox. Why?
There are plenty of good, free FTP clients to choose from. Would not an extention that's a frontend to existing FTP clients be better? Have different preset configurations so that it will work with different clients through their commandline switches? You could effectively "integrate" existing clients into Firefox this way, all without reinventing the wheel.
Then again, I haven't tried it yet. Don't really see the point. Add SFTP support and I might just have to give it a shot.
A few days ago my father told me he wanted a "jump drive". Had no clue what he was talking about, but it turns out to be a certain brand name for 'em. He then proceeded to start calling them "flash drives". Go figure.
In my mind, flash is Compact Flash; Memory stick is Sony. USB/thumb/keychain drive? Makes sense. An actual reference to something unique (more or less) about the device itself! Pen/memory drive? I can't see it catching on.
Until he actually bought the thing, I had no clue what he meant. Then again, he rarely knows, himself.;P
In a completely unrelated, yet somehow similar manner, I have an issue with Flash (under Linux). Specifically, because of the lack of Windows' fonts, I oft lack text from Flash content (effectively breaking many sites). Case and point? Macromedia's very own site. The top navigation menu, as well as the drop-downs from that, are lacking all text.
I hear that you can install the MSFT web fonts pack and have better luck. Perhaps I've done it improperly, but I'm still having such issues.
The moral of the story? We need some Free^2, good, cross-platform fonts specifically designed for the web. Especially useful is bundled with our OS, or browser, or something.
Yes, even proprietary web technologies needs to be accessable by anyone and everyone, regardless of browser/OS/available fonts.
And no, I'm not implying we should have ActiveX ported to Linux. Honestly, ActiveX is fine, but it needs to stay off the web entirely for the general good.
Indeed, the good ol' days of random bots DCCing you hot_britney_pr0n.mpeg.lots-o-goats.vbs and the like. The issue with that was the same that they had with e-mail attachments-- the user actually has to run it, unless they're really insane and set up their client to auto-launch files[1].
The new method is spamming links to images, usually jpegs, with embeded binary code[2]. http://www.foo.bar/jennifer_likes_it_hard.jpg would, say, leave an.exe in C:\ that would find its way into running when you reboot, which would generally turn your box into a spam bot.

Or they were monitoring packets. Most ISPs still don't offer secure logins. It should be fairly trivial to catch his password from their end, or even to find out what accounts he's using, for that matter.
Just set up a simple auto-responder in your mail client. The message you need is very basic, and will provide your clients/users with enough information to trouble shoot their problem! Ohh, and it's only four characters.;-)
"RTFM"
Bonus points if you actually include a link to the manual, but no need to go overboard...!
Okay, so that's just what I would do. Why, yes, I am still looking for a job.. why do you ask?
You can pick up a Dreamcast for about $15 USD at your local EB, and you can get it to run BSD or Linux. The only issue is you'll need the Boardband Adapter, and that will set you back a pretty penny. They go for about a hundred on Ebay, but if you can find a friend who is willing to donate one, you're all set for a small, low power server.:) You'll also need a DC keyboard, or a PS/2 -> DC adapter, which run about $15.
Is the average Windows user knowledgable/concerned enough to secure his insecure (yes, even with SP2) home or otherwise box, or at least give security a second thought?
No.
Oh, if anyone cares, I installed SP2 on my dad's home box right after it hit Windows Update. Turned on the firewall, and left Zone Alarm on. Walked in to use the said box a few days back and found both firewalls disabled and Kazaa running. He had also managed to pick up Gator -- whatever they're calling it now, and a few other things I care not to mention.
So I did what any sane geek would do. Turn the monitor off and safely retreat to my room, pretending I didn't see a thing!;P
What I ended up with a system that had no vi (or similar), no inetd, no finger, no telnet - none of the many tools that make Unix systems just the fine place one wants t live at.
That's actually the entire point. No clutter, unless it's your clutter.
And worst of all it came with an editor that broke lines of/etc/fstab without mentioning - lots of fun for novice users trying to find out why their fstab is busted.
Nano? Did you read the documentation (or man page, for that matter)? It specifically mentions you need to use the -w switch, or it will break (wrap) lines.
It's init.d.;) And there's some fine documentation that goes along about how to use it.
And here I thought the BSD crowd was the "RTFM" one.:O Then again, anyone still using telnet.... x.X
On the food aspect, whenever I run into coding problems, I go bake cookies. Helps if you have a near by oven and supply of dough, of course, but it gives you a good 30 minutes to stop and focus on something else. I usually end up pacing around while they bake, looking out the windows, looking around the kitchen, and more oft than not have a viable solution in addition to some fresh cookies when I go back to coding.
I've heard that there were some changes in 2.6.8 to disallow non-root users access to recorders (something related to firmware, was it?).
Could someone comment on this, and has the behavior been changed in 2.6.9?

New map shows that Canada really is part of the United States!
:)
Okay, off to RTFA now, eh?
XFCE 4.2 Beta 1 was released a week ago. It still has some quirks, but overall quite nice. A great improvement over 4.0.6 (stable)!
Worth a look if you like GTK, but don't like the bloat of GNOME. Or if you like Fluxbox, but want something with more eyecandy.
I'll let the zealots take over from here... ;~)
Lose the flash. Lose the white on light-blue. Lose the red submit button. Lose the JavaScript.
And then Ramen noodles for lunch. Yum!
