Sorry, but you're wrong. "Anything that remotely involves creativity or innovation is not going anywhere" ??? That's quite similar to what was said last time outsourcing surged - only blue-collar jobs are ever going to get moved, no need to worry if your job is a white collar, highly-educated, bla bla bla... There is NO potential limit to outsourcing jobs. The ONLY jobs that can't get outsourced are the ones that require a person to physically be there - like car washing, etc.
And it DOES present a strategic long term concern for the US. When more and more of these jobs go outside of our borders, doesn't that strike anyone as a little bit of a threat to our security? If all of our technology is being worked on by non-Americans, if the jobs that require government clearance now will move elsewhere, don't you think that will be a "bad thing" for the security?
And the biggest problem with outsourcing of intellectual jobs is, there is no incentive to study your ass off and choose a profession that requires a lot of knowledge. America will slowly become a nation of 99% truck drivers and 1% CEO's.
While this may not bea good implementation of the idea, the idea itself is awesome!!!! I would LOVE to have a gadget like that, done right, with me on the train to work, so I could play Heroes of Might and Magic 2, Fallout, Day of the Tentacle, Betrayal at Krondor, Doom, etc etc...
My guess would be the grad student didn't see one cent from that $200K. IIRC, Marc Andreesen developed Netscape while in grad school, working in a lab for $6.85/hour.
I'm one of the few people that didn't like the hack-n-slash gameplay of Neverwinter Nights and felt that it was a dissapointment after the brilliance of Baldur's Gate I and II.
Maybe I'm having my expectations too high, but I am absolutely psyched about this game. Please, Bioware, not too much fighting, more memorable characters (I think Minsc (+ Boo) was a greatest character in history of games), and more great storyline twists!
LOGO was awesome! One of the best programming languages ever created. Oh, the stuff I used to do with that turtle... I think I even wrote a Raptor-type game where the turtle is flying through a narrow tunnel, shooting at obstacles and trying not to hit anything.
Those were the days.
Oh, and this post is on-topic because it was in Russian (as far as I can remember)
.. and I second the recommendation for Timothy Budd's "C++ for Java Programmers" (ISBN 0201612462)... great book!
Also, this tutorial is full of useful information. However, you have to ignore the occasional bitter remarks about Java from the author, such as these gems:
Unlike Java, C++ is a fast, powerful, and flexible programming language.
Java was built as a simple-to-learn subset of C++ for set-top boxes and drooling AOL users. Now, it's time to play in the big leagues.
Am I the only one that thinks NYT just done IRC a great service by printing such a great advertisement for IRC? Watch how those 500,000 people soon turn into *pinkie to lip* BILLIONS of users!
You'd be surprised how much the industry is sick of Java programmers, and on the lookout for good low-level engineers, or people who can do Forth or COBOL.
Hahaha! Obviously you know nothing of the COBOL programmers situation right now... They are lucky to get ANY job at all, for a fraction of what they were making 'back in the day'. A friend of my family has lost his job due to 9/11 and hasn't found one since... he's currently volunteering and looking for a job. He's a very smart guy, he's got a PhD and is a great programmer.. but he doesn't have experience in anything other than COBOL.
So um, yeah, good luck staying with C and assembler all your career, while the 'young fools' are running around with their Java, C#, and XML.

For example, if Java supported BitTorrent, it could look like this:
BitTorrent torrent = new BitTorrent(); torrent.get("Star Wars Episode 3.avi");...
If you let your kid play violent videogames, watch violent movies, etc. it is YOUR responsibility to make sure your kid 100% understands that it is just a game, and it is WRONG to go out on the street and kill passerbys.
If your kid does do that, you as a parent should be held responsible, because you failed to bring up your child in such a way that he would understand that.
Of course, a line needs to be drawn at some age, where it is assumed a kid can think for himself. But before that, it is a responsibility of a parent.
... hundreds of thousands of Hotmail users complain about getting too much spam. Then Microsoft introduces cool new feature - switch to pay-version of Hotmail and stop getting spam! Of course, once you switch, you'll still be getting spam, but Bill Gates will swear, foaming at the mouth, that the only spam pay users get is the one that somehow gets through the filter, and is illegal.. What can I say, Bill Gates is a genius.
Seems like such an important fact, that age and sex of the programmer in question just HAD to be mentioned in the story summary ....
Finally, they're learning their lesson from the original Mac vs PC battle for market share =)

.. that seems to be the pattern for the day anyway, but if there's one game Slashdot crowd doesn't really care about, it's The Sims.
From what I understand, Larry Lovage is Larry Laffer's nephew, thus the different last name.
Yes!!! Leisure Suit Larry with full nudity! I've been waiting for this since 1988, when I was 7.
What's Scott Richter's latest and most accurate phone # and e-mail? We need to post it here and mod the post up, so he'll be opting in REAL BIG.
...Mac....
Does anyone know where system requierments might be found / when they will be announced?
The only requirement I can think of is getting a real computer.
