    I'm not sure I understand your reply, but I think the GP was making the point that speakers won't help someone who is both deaf and blind.

    Think of the situation where there's more than one person with an account on the machine. As it stands the worst a viral 'rm -rf /' (or whatever) can do is trash my files. My wife's files are safe. If I run that same code as root, I lose my files, the OS's files and all conjugal privileges!

    Unfortunately Christianity has lowered the demand for evidence to believe in God to zero.

    Actually, no. Christianity as it's taught by a loud minority says this, but there's more to it than that.

    For example, Paul says in one of the letters to the Corinthians that our faith won't be perfected until we have seen God. In other words, perfect faith can't be attained without perfect evidence. The Bible also has a lot to say about questioning everything that you are told.

    It's just easier to tell people that your position is better because they don't have to think about it. Of course, it's also a lot creepier.

    Or animals threatening your livestock or property. Or livestock that is injured.

    Please, there are plenty of reasons to use a gun that don't involve killing people.

    some consider suicide to be an unforgivable sin (esp. when there's no time to repent for the sin of suicide).

    Assuming we're talking Christianity here, there's no biblical reason to believe that suicide is an automatic hell penalty. Nothing. Nada. Zilch.

    Of course, some feel they've got to threaten those who would like to shortcut life, but there's no biblical way to justify it.

    I could get into the theology of this, but hey, this is /. and I'm already an ignorant blowhole for daring to say I'm a Christian.

    I haven't RTFA yet, but this isn't exactly news Down Here--Cane toads have been pests for years, at least in the tropical north.

    The big news is that they are {evolving|being noodly appendaged} to be able to travel further (they're spreading at a rate of up to 60 km/year as opposed to 10 km/yr when they were introduced) and they are adapting to colder climates.

    Apart from their utility in practicing my golf swing, this is quite scary stuff for those of us here in the south.

    Actually, I remember thinking the same thing. Of course, asking whether or not an observation fits with the currently accepted theory is tantamount to heresy, and anyone who wants to be considered half intelligent would do well to accept this fact.

    Since when does somebody have to have an alternative to ask how the prevailing paradigm accounts for a phenomenon? Isn't that a reasonable first step in formulating an hypothesis?
