Yes. It's fairly prevalent in University of Texas. I use the software to post grades to my students (not by my choice). It's such a pain to upload grades. There's a feature to upload grades from a file, but it requires doing it line by line and requires too many page loads. It's not terrible software; just not that good.

Now this nuclear safety officer is just being silly. If high energy particles could really create black holes which would swallow up the Earth, wouldn't it have happened already? We are constantly being bombarded by high energy particles. The fact that we are still here makes it hard to believe any little experiments we do here will destroy the Earth or more.

In the future, we may not need keyboards, since some better input system will be developed. You could envision a touch chord system which doesn't require location accuracy. Better voice recognition or brain recognition. Letters could be formed by a variety of gestures. Typing doesn't have to be an up-down motion of the fingers; it could be various finger gestures which don't require pressing down a button. There's no reason why a new system would be slower than traditional typing.

The low pressure sodium vapor lamps that are ubiquitous in streets of USA are already pretty efficient (80-180 lm/W according to @everything2 and up to 200lm/W according to wikipedia). 12. IAAPhysicist, 70% efficiency is bullshit on MSI Develops a Heat-Driven Cooler · · Score: 1

It's not that clear from the article how they are defining efficiency, but if they are claiming that they are converting 70% of heat energy into air flow energy, simple thermodynamics can tell you that that is bullshit. If you assume an ambient temperature of 300K, then you need a temperature of 1000K MINIMUM to achieve 70% energy conversion. The Carnot efficiency is 1-Tc/Th, which is the best efficiency possible for a heat engine. Typical heat engines are a fraction of that efficiency.

  13. unruh effect on Laser Light Re-creates 'Black Holes' in the Lab · · Score: 1

According to Einstein's equivalence principle, the local physics of a constant accelerating frame of reference is the same as the physics of a uniform gravitational field. This equivalence is so powerful that if you accelerate for long enough, the physics are like if you were stationary in space near a black hole. You expend fuel to accelerate in empty space, just like you expend fuel to stay stationary near a black hole. Moreover, you actually can see a black hole behind you in an accelerating reference frame, and it even exudes Hawking radiation. This latter effect is explained by the Unruh effect. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unruh_effect
