You do know that you can have a 600W PSU and not use all 600 watts, right? 600W just means that 600 watts are available, not that all 600 are being used. Additionally, some people purchase larger PSUs because they output cleaner power. And actually, web servers don't take that much power. MythTV and reencoding servers don't have to be running 24/7 either. If you make sure to turn the monitors off, you can take off a lot of power usage. Throttling down the CPU helps too, if your computer supports it, as well as spinning down drives.
What you've just described is simply a high-end laptop. My 2-year-old Toshiba laptop even has a 7200 rpm hard drive (upgraded, but still 7200 rpm). It also has tv out and handles multimedia well. I can attach a 2nd monitor and watch hdtv-resolution video with no problem at all. I frequently play Unreal Tournament 2004 at 1024x768 with 32 bit color, and it does fine (unless I max out the quality settings with stuff like trilinear filtering, at which time it overheats the improperly cooled video card).
After going through all the cookies I had in firefox and seeing how many were junk cookies (totally useless to me, and billions of copies of them) I set firefox to ask me to allow/deny/temporarily allow each cookie from each site, you would be surprised about how many sites store millions of useless cookies with information that either isn't needed or should be in their database, not in a cookie. I don't mind if they send a single session ID cookie, or maybe 2 or 3 general user information cookies, but when they start sending 10 just because I visited one page of their site, that's getting a little excessive.
And about the ad-targetting mentioned in the article, haven't they heard of returning random ads?
They're going to KNOW how to use the DVD burner? And they're going to actually use all of the cpu power, hard drive space, and memory? And they haven't seen the $30 keyboards in WalMart or whatever?
The horrible part is when the tubes get backed up, it makes a horrible mess all over your bathroom floor...
Oh wait...

It's Slashdot's new automatic-dupe function. It takes all the work out of duping articles!
Especially if it's a Windows machine...
And your neighbors might get tired of the cries of anguish after you realize a few minutes later that it was also the computer...

Use adblock plus. It allows for 'element blocking' which will let you block divs, table cells, etc. It even lets you block based on classes/ids!
I'm guessing it's because they already have the xls -> html conversion with their web searching, they can just use the same tool to go html -> xls.
Are you kidding??? Repair shops are going to get freaking rich by doing hundreds of 5 minute firmware-reloads, rounded up to the hour, at $35/hour.
Did anybody else realize that most of the people pushing HD-DVD and HDMI manufacture TVs?
Future? you mean you haven't ever seen an aol instant messenger public chatroom?
It doesn't have quite enough memory to store the internet. And no, you can't download it, you have to go "outside" to buy it.

He won't be confused if he reads slashdot.
