Exactly - and a good half of my Universitys students don't have computers. They use the lab computers, some of which require no sign in at all. How are those to be monitored? What about public libraries which also have public terminals?

  2. Re:Classes offered online on Online vs. Traditional Degrees? · · Score: 2, Interesting

How the heck are you going to do a real college-level physics lab course, for example, if you don't have any of the expensive equipment? What would a chem course be like? "OK, now mix some baking soda and vinegar, and post about what happened."

I briefly attended a community college with online and by-wire classes. I spoke with someone who had taken Chem 1314 online, and when I asked the same question I got the same answer you just assumed. They'd use household items in really basic home experimentation labs. Sometimes there'd be less common ingredients, like citric acid, but mostly stuff I did in elementary school classrooms.

I took a by-wire class in high school from the same college, the quality was pretty much the same as my traditional classes because it was a Humanities class and largely lecture based. I can't imagine how an online chem course could match my lab experience though, especially with regards to learning proper yield calculations and the use of precision measuring equipment.

I think that deleting entries in specific Google sites only relevant to certain countries with laws prohibiting such entries isn't quite the same as deleting a link to the competition..

Besides, if you're going to open that can of worms it seems like you'd point out the massive China filters, but those apply to Microsoft too, don't they? I wonder if Microsoft also deletes entries for racist sites in Germany and France where it's prohibited (or seemingly at least strongly discouraged by the governments)?

Yes I have been saying this for years. I think we should first patent the concept of a DC house and then create a smart wall jack that can determine what the DC requirements are.

I think Thomas Edison patented the idea of a DC house, didn't he?

What you guys are overlooking is that AC has very easy and efficient current/voltage transformation compared to DC, aside from power transmission benefits.

Slander is considered an abuse of free speech and will get you in trouble whether political or personal. The case wasn't whether the blogger had a right to free speech, but to anonymity. We aren't constitutionally guaranteed anonymity, as we're expected to take responsibility for what we say. This is news because typically people are held responsible for slander and the consequences can be costly.

I'm glad anonymity won, but I don't know if I'd feel the same way if some anonymous ass was slandering me on a popular website and people were believing it. It's a career killer for professional politicians, especially on the local level.

  12. Quit yer bicyclist propaganda on Practical Method for Getting Oil from Oil Shale? · · Score: 1

Does the government just assume that everyone is interested in funding that? Do they take taxes from cyclists and pedestrians to pay for the steady supply of oil? Everyone should be interested in funding that, since the prices of everything are based on it. As diesel and gas go up in price, so does everything that needs to be shipped. Bicyclists are consumers too, so they have an interest in the prices of fuel being low so that all of their goods will have low prices. Bicyclists use the roads too, so they're interested in traffic control police and good roads (albeit not highways, which are necessary for the transportation of their goods). According to our leadership the stabilisation of oil-producing middle-eastern countries wasn't the goal, it was the stabilisation of totalitarionistic nuclear weapon wielding maniacs, but that's another story..
