Television has existed for 70 years or whatever, and I still don't think it's art. Television has never asked for acceptance as art, nor has it ever given us any reason to view it as such.

I expect something more like genres of music for which the "pinnacle" of the genre will be considered to be pretty early-on (I'm thinking 1986-1994 or so for video games, but that may be colored by my age). Video games will become art at some interval after which video game creators view themselves as artists and respected artists from other genres enter the video game industry.

I'm a college student, and I'm amazed how many people (mostly girls) shell out big bucks for an underpowered 15" wintel laptop when they never, ever take it anywhere. As the proud owner of a great 12-incher, I honestly believe laptops are meant to run at 1024x768, and you can't really do that with anything much smaller.

That's the one thing that keeps laptops from overtaking desktops for day-to-day use - the fact of the matter is that only 25% of the population actually wants to take their computer somewhere.

...you know what we could actually do? We could think of each of our 10 fingers as being a 0 or 1 in a 10 digit, base 2 number. Hold the finger up, and you've got a 1, otherwise it's a 0. Thinking of our fingers as a binary number, we'd get 2^10 (that's 1024) digits, which is a good deal better than our measly 10 we get now. Of course, this catching on would require quite a meme. Can anybody reading this do it well?

    > This reminds me of the various terms Eskimos have for snow.

This is an urban legend. Completely BS. We have half a dozen words for snow (try sleet, etc), and there is no language called Eskimo (there are hundreds of Inuit languages).

The Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, which this rumor sprang from, is also BS and should be ignored considering both men's limited knowledge of Linguistics and poor research work. Language only has an ancillary, secondary effect on thought. However, thought has near complete control of language.

For more information, read the wikipedia article which should give you some more background. And please stop spreading the rumor.

Not just Steven Pinker, but every linguist I've ever talked to (I'm a student of Linguistics) will tell you to stop spreading this myth. At least half will tell you to also stop teaching the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis. I reserve the right to flame anyone on slashdot who mentions the Great Eskimo Hoax.

why couldn't Redhat Novell (also released a desktop linux distro today) wait ONE DAY so they could include Firefox 1.0 instead of one of the RC/PR series?

Granted, the Firefox team keeps changing their deadlines, but my PR (installed as a prepackaged binary for Slackware) crashes a few times a week. I would have waited a day if i was Redhat, considering how important I consider Firefox to the success of the FOSS movement, and the money and man-hours Redhat contributes to the Mozilla project.

Um, not exactly. Patrick, who is the guy quoted in TFA, is the ONLY person working on Slackware. The whole thing is his baby (ignoring all the GNU tools of course) and that's one reason I love it.

But back on topic, Slackware is definetly a hobbyist distro. I'd say that it's more likely you'll see a split between the two desktop environments, with RedHat making GNOME/Linux systems and SUSE/HP/etc. making KDE/Linux, than problems for either desktop. Nor is it a Good Thing. If that was the case, I wouldn't have Enlightenment.
