Now, that being said, to do my job, you don't have to be a technical whiz. It certainly helps, but isn't a requirement.
Many good managers of technical departments are not technical themselves. They work on budgets, planning, and leave the technical decision making up to their underlings. If, as a manager, they employ qualified, knowledgable employees, he can rely on their skills for the technical stuff, and he can use his managerial skills to keep the department happy, funded and well-respected.
The technical guys can do what they are good at, and the manager can do what he is good at.
Now, if your manager is non-technical, as well as a being poor at budgeting, politics and management, I agree with the department sitting down with the company president as a group and explain the situation.
I was a network/security admin previous to my career as one of The Few, The Proud, and it sickened me to see this happen. I know that had I been in my old office job, I would have been applying patches day 1, even if that required staying late and doing all the appropriate testing beforehand. Of course, knowing full well what happens when you do things your not supposed to on gov't computers based on two up close cases, I just sat back and watched it unfold, rather than chance a trip to the brig.
It's not a slam against you, as you openly admitted you are growing into the position. You may very well be a bright, and intelligent person, but I doubt that you will consider everything on the first run. And therefore, because you are without the appropriate guidance and leadership you will probably fail. It's more of a slam your bosses and the system, for not giving you what you need up front, and for giving you more to bite off than you can chew.

I work for a "banner ad" firm which will remain nameless for obvious reasons. Despite our "in your face" tactics, tracking cookies, and the sneaky ActiveX exploit installs, the programmers really are just regular people. The group of guys I work with are a lot of fun to be around and are extremely knowledgable in the field. Some people probably think we get a kick out of hijacking some poor guy's web browser, but seriously, we've all got a family to feed. In this day and time, with the programming jobs being sent overseas, I can't be picky anymore. I wish I could work some place where I spend my days programming to cure cancer, but I've got to take what I can get until the economy picks up! So go easy on me fellas, I'm just a joe blow programmer like you.
The poster's comment about having the "right tools" (PS, Lightwave, etc.) exemplifies most programmer's and the general publics incorrect view on computer graphics and technology and art.
All too many people think that if you have the right "digital tools" amazing Pixar quality art will pop-out. Its simply not true. The primary reason that pixar is so unbelievable is not because John Lasseter and co. are incredible programmers but because they are amazing artists that understand how to use their paintbrush-the computer-to the fullest extent.
Some posts have mentioned taking evening classes and such. That's a good idea, but all too many of them are stuck in the rut of teaching you how to do different tricks on a particular piece of software.
As a programmer who has dabbled in art my suggestion is to try and forget your programmer self. Don't look at Photoshop and see all its cool features, its extensibility, effects, etc. Approach the project just like you would if someone were to hand you a paintbrush and say paint a picture or a camera and say make a movie. In other words, understand the medium you are working with, but don't get engrossed in it. It's still just art.

LINDON, UT (AP) - A member of the GNAA trolling organization was arrested Thursday morning at his Lindon home following the devastating crapflood he allegedly organized on the Slashdot.org Web site Wednesday evening. Police were able to successfully track down the suspect by tracking the IP address he used to brag about his exploits in the hours following the attack.
The attack, directed at an article on BSD, began at 9:00 PM MST (0400 GMT) and abruptly stopped 1 hour and 33 minutes later. The crapflood consisted of over 1,000 comments, and rendered the discussion virtually unreadable at a threshold of 0 or -1. It is thought to be the largest crapflood in the history of the site. This attack comes amid a recent spate of similar attacks against weblogs. One Slashdot editor whose site was vandalized responded by disabling all comments to his personal site and deleting his entire archive of blog posts.
Editors responded to the attack by adjusting the "lameness filter" and moderating the crapflood comments to -1. Some have suggested that this attack may reignite the debate on the proposed permanent disabling of anonymous posting on Slashdot.
Crapflooding of this magnitude is a rare occurrence on Slashdot, thanks to a variety of anti-troll measures that have been implemented over the years by the site's editors. Because comments cannot be submitted within 2 minutes of each other, and repeated downward moderation results in an IP ban, it is necessary to compile a long list of proxies in order to create a high-volume crapflood. It is believed that several GNAA members cooperated in Wednesday's attack.
The GNAA, or Gay Nigger Association of America, founded in 2003, is a trolling organization known primarily for its frequent boilerplate postings. The text, designed to be offensive, contains numerous racial slurs, links to pornographic web sites, and has recently been updated with text insulting the Slashdot editorial staff. Rob Malda has indicated in his journal that he considers the GNAA to be part of an "axis of abuse," along with Trollkore and anti-slash.org.
Slashdot, founded in 1997, is a popular science and technology website known for its in-depth discussions on a variety of topics. It is also a popular target of trolls, in large part because the site invites and in many ways encourages competitive manipulation of its moderation system.
The GNAA member arrested this morning is known only by his online name Lysol. His real name has been withheld because he is a juvenile.
If convicted on all counts, "Lysol" could be sentenced to a maximum of 5 years hard labor, which would likely consist of answering customer support calls for America Online. Because of his age, he is not eligible to receive the goatse penalty in the state of Utah.
Anti-slash.org has issued a statement condemning yesterday's attack and emphasized that it is in no way affiliated with the GNAA, though it does support GNAA actions as long as they are in line with its stated mission.
Here is an excellent question, and a notion of my own taxation philosophy.
Taxation should be necessary, relevent, and funds garnered from it reused in related affairs. Take, for instance, gasoline tax. This is (should) used to build and maintain roads, an act directly related to the consumption of gasoline. It even makes sense. The more gasoline you buy, the more you are driving, and the more wear you put on the road. Similarly, the more you wear the road down, so too should you aid more in repairing same.
Now, the question about taxing phone service and VoIP. Is this a necessary taxation? Is there some reason why it may be necessary for the government to seek money out of this business? Under what general principle is this money to be used? Are they attempting to compare sales tax (property acquisition) to service sales, something that does not seem to be taxed? (ie: IIRC, my cable internet bill is not taxed, and I don't recall any other cases where 'service' with no product is taxed) Seems to be to be a rather vague and specious reason to tax VoIP "just because" phone service was taxed. VoIP is a completely different breed of service, and by itself does not even require a service provider to function (direct IP to IP calls).
Screw the government if it thinks it needs to tax things just out of principle. This is how taxes should be driven, out of a need by the government to fund a related community-at-large project. I honestly don't see phone taxes as doing anything of the sort. If they can't come up with a good reason why VoIP needs to be taxed, and what that money is going to be used for, then they do not need to tax it.

Actually, it is a very practical car. The optical fiber used in place of wiring allows the weight of the cables to be reduced to about half of the weight of wires. Think of all the wiring that is in the typical automobile. If we can replace auto wiring with optical fiber, saving over 100 lbs in ecah car, just think of the increased fuel savings! About 3/4 of your average turd is made of water. Of course, this value is highly variable - the water content of diarrhea is much higher, and the amount of water in poop that has been retained (voluntarily or otherwise) is lower. I work for a "banner ad" firm which will remain nameless for obvious reasons. Despite our "in your face" tactics, tracking cookies, and the sneaky ActiveX exploit installs, the programmers really are just regular people. The group of guys I work with are a lot of fun to be around and are extremely knowledgable in the field. Some people probably think we get a kick out of hijacking some poor guy's web browser, but seriously, we've all got a family to feed. All too many people think that if you have the right "digital tools" amazing Pixar quality art will pop-out. Its simply not true. The primary reason that pixar is so unbelievable is not because John Lasseter and co. are incredible programmers but because they are amazing artists that understand how to use their paintbrush-the computer-to the fullest extent.
Some posts have mentioned taking evening classes and such. That's a good idea, but all too many of them are stuck in the rut of teaching you how to do different tricks on a particular piece of software.
As a programmer who has dabbled in art my suggestion is to try and forget your programmer self. Don't look at Photoshop and see all its cool features, its extensibility, effects, etc. Approach the project just like you would if someone were to hand you a paintbrush and say paint a picture or a camera and say make a movie. In other words, understand the medium you are working with, but don't get engrossed in it. It's still just art.

LINDON, UT (AP) - A member of the GNAA trolling organization was arrested Thursday morning at his Lindon home following the devastating crapflood he allegedly organized on the Slashdot.org Web site Wednesday evening. Police were able to successfully track down the suspect by tracking the IP address he used to brag about his exploits in the hours following the attack.
The attack, directed at an article on BSD, began at 9:00 PM MST (0400 GMT) and abruptly stopped 1 hour and 33 minutes later. The crapflood consisted of over 1,000 comments, and rendered the discussion virtually unreadable at a threshold of 0 or -1. It is thought to be the largest crapflood in the history of the site. This attack comes amid a recent spate of similar attacks against weblogs. One Slashdot editor whose site was vandalized responded by disabling all comments to his personal site and deleting his entire archive of blog posts.
Editors responded to the attack by adjusting the "lameness filter" and moderating the crapflood comments to -1. Some have suggested that this attack may reignite the debate on the proposed permanent disabling of anonymous posting on Slashdot.
Crapflooding of this magnitude is a rare occurrence on Slashdot, thanks to a variety of anti-troll measures that have been implemented over the years by the site's editors. Because comments cannot be submitted within 2 minutes of each other, and repeated downward moderation results in an IP ban, it is necessary to compile a long list of proxies in order to create a high-volume crapflood. It is believed that several GNAA members cooperated in Wednesday's attack.
The GNAA, or Gay Nigger Association of America, founded in 2003, is a trolling organization known primarily for its frequent boilerplate postings. The text, designed to be offensive, contains numerous racial slurs, links to pornographic web sites, and has recently been updated with text insulting the Slashdot editorial staff. Rob Malda has indicated in his journal that he considers the GNAA to be part of an "axis of abuse," along with Trollkore and anti-slash.org.
Slashdot, founded in 1997, is a popular science and technology website known for its in-depth discussions on a variety of topics. It is also a popular target of trolls, in large part because the site invites and in many ways encourages competitive manipulation of its moderation system.
The GNAA member arrested this morning is known only by his online name Lysol. His real name has been withheld because he is a juvenile.
If convicted on all counts, "Lysol" could be sentenced to a maximum of 5 years hard labor, which would likely consist of answering customer support calls for America Online. Because of his age, he is not eligible to receive the goatse penalty in the state of Utah.
Anti-slash.org has issued a statement condemning yesterday's attack and emphasized that it is in no way affiliated with the GNAA, though it does support GNAA actions as long as they are in line with its stated mission.
Here is an excellent question, and a notion of my own taxation philosophy.
Taxation should be necessary, relevent, and funds garnered from it reused in related affairs. Take, for instance, gasoline tax. This is (should) used to build and maintain roads, an act directly related to the consumption of gasoline. It even makes sense. The more gasoline you buy, the more you are driving, and the more wear you put on the road. Similarly, the more you wear the road down, so too should you aid more in repairing same.
Now, the question about taxing phone service and VoIP. Is this a necessary taxation? Is there some reason why it may be necessary for the government to seek money out of this business? Under what general principle is this money to be used? Are they attempting to compare sales tax (property acquisition) to service sales, something that does not seem to be taxed? (ie: IIRC, my cable internet bill is not taxed, and I don't recall any other cases where 'service' with no product is taxed) Seems to be to be a rather vague and specious reason to tax VoIP "just because" phone service was taxed. VoIP is a completely different breed of service, and by itself does not even require a service provider to function (direct IP to IP calls).
Screw the government if it thinks it needs to tax things just out of principle. This is how taxes should be driven, out of a need by the government to fund a related community-at-large project. I honestly don't see phone taxes as doing anything of the sort. If they can't come up with a good reason why VoIP needs to be taxed, and what that money is going to be used for, then they do not need to tax it.

Actually, it is a very practical car. The optical fiber used in place of wiring allows the weight of the cables to be reduced to about half of the weight of wires. Think of all the wiring that is in the typical automobile. If we can replace auto wiring with optical fiber, saving over 100 lbs in ecah car, just think of the increased fuel savings! What is poop made of?
About 3/4 of your average turd is made of water. Of course, this value is highly variable - the water content of diarrhea is much higher, and the amount of water in poop that has been retained (voluntarily or otherwise) is lower. Water is absorbed out of fecal material as it passes through the intestine, so the longer a turd resides inside before emerging, the drier it will be.

Why does poop stink?
Poop stinks as a result of the products of bacterial action. Bacteria produce smelly, sulfur- or nitrogen-rich organic compounds such as indole, skatole, and mercaptans, and the inorganic gas hydrogen sulfide. These are the same compounds that give farts their odor.
Why is poop brown?
The color comes mainly from bilirubin, a pigment that arises from the breakdown of red blood cells in the liver and bone marrow. The actual metabolic pathway of bilirubin and its byproducts in the body is very complicated, so we will simply say that a lot of it ends up in the intestine, where it is further modified by bacterial action. But the color itself comes from iron. Iron in hemoglobin in red blood cells gives blood its red color, and iron in the waste product bilirubin gives rise to its brown color.
What other colors of poop are possible?
Poop is mostly shades of brown or yellow, but other colors can arise under certain circumstances. For example, someone with a bleeding ulcer might have tarry black poop from the presence of partially digested blood. Bleeding in the intestine, from an anal fissure or split, for example, can stain the poop red. Bloody poop can also be a sign of colon cancer, so you should get it checked out by a doctor if you see blood in your stool. Some illnesses in babies gives them green or even blue-green poop. But another source of blue poop in children is more innocent: it can come from eating a concentrated source of blue food coloring such as ice cream. Intense red food coloring can produce bright red poop. I think it's safe to say he pays to have his submissions accepted. I doubt the Slashdot editors are dumb enough to find them Insightful every time and to give his blog all this free publicity. As a side note, Trolland's blog would be a perfect GNAA crapflood target. I'm sure the intelligent goat-see could find a way around his anti-crapflood filters.
