If by flat tax you mean "everyone pays $20 tax" then that's outrageous. People who earn more money don't necessarily work harder. My grandfather worked damn hard as a butcher all his life and he worked a hell of a lot harder then other people I know who earn a lot more then he did.

All ISPs come with something called an e-mail account. Most of them allow you to store the e-mails on your computer getting around any limits. "Yes you google lets you search your entire e-mail." That is certainly a wow factor and one that almost made me want to go to g-mail, until I realised Thunderbird and Mozilla did the exact same thing. "Yes but google let's you have threads" which surprisingly enough, as does thunderbird and mozilla. "Yes but gmail let's you read e-mails anywhere" but I don't need that. I can have Thunderbird keep my e-mails in the e-mail server I use for however many days I want. Currently that's until I move it from my inbox folder (which I do when the information is no longer important and I only need it for archival purposes). I don't need archived e-mails except when I'm on my home computer. There were two things that I was excited about with gmail. Threads and the search function. But now that I can do both, I don't care anymore.

I recently did a report on censorship for university and this is COMPLETELY FALSE. Banning of books is a common occurrence in America. TONS of people in America are scared of books. This really just goes to show that Americans truly do think they're the land of the free.

People have been copying cassette tapes for years. They had also been copying software for years (all of my software on my Amiga was pirated). They have also been copying VHS video's for years. But it was only until a year or two before I got my DVD player that they started making copy-protection for VHS videos.

So the question is, why then? What happened then that made everyone from that point onward paranoid about copy-protection? It's like America with terrorism. Before 9/11 your average-day joe didn't care about it. After 9/11 they did care. What was the 9/11 in the music, video and software industry?

  14. Everyone will have to do it on Yet Another Degrading DVD · · Score: 5, Interesting

Everyone will have to do this, or else people will just stop buying DVDs from people X. Sure they might miss out on some movies, but people would rather that then not being able to own a DVD.

Also, the distributors who use these DVDs better make sure they don't distribute the same movie in VHS format, or else people will just go back to that. How this helps the distributors I'll be fucked if I know (it is possible to pirate videos, just before DVD became popular they were experimenting in copy-protection, but there would have been work-arounds).

I really don't get the point to this, this will only increase piracy. People like to own stuff they buy. If you make them think they don't own it, they won't buy it if there is an alternative (even an illegal one) available.
