The russians did an excellent job fighting the germans but one of teh most important contributions of the US was, after teh war, stopping the russians. Towards the end of the war it was becoming considerably more clear that Russia had less then altruistic motives for 'liberating' eastern europe from the nazi opressors.
That is not to say, the Americans didn't play a hugely important role towards the end of the war. Their constent air raids along side the british helped gain teh upper hand in europe and, no one can doubt the impact the bombing of hiroshima had on the war.
Still, the Americans did not single handedly win the war, though, having not endured the burden of combat as long as the rest of the Allies (and only once having been directly attacked), they emerged looking less fatigued and scarred then the rest of their allies

  12. Creating a software cost plataeu on Microsoft Extends Product Lifecycle · · Score: 1

The problem with free 'as in freedom' is it can result in free 'as in beer' which is all well and fine for generic applications but not good for specialised software.
for example, the software company i work for produces structural engineering software. These applications take many years to develop and improve apon and have a very limited customer base. As a result, in order to turn even a marginal profit, the company has to charge a fairly high sum (3-5 grand depending on the product).
I simply purchase a single copy of their software and sell it for half the price. That is until someone else does the same thing to me. Thus the cost of the product falls considerably and the comapny can't even cover the costs of development
I understand how GPL makes a lot of sense for a kick ass web browser or word processor, but for specialised niche software where most users aren't programmers, open source isn't and shouldn't eb the model of choice

  23. You still loose at blackjack on Geeks and Poker? · · Score: 1

While I have come ahead in black jack more times then i have lost, technically if you play 1 million $1 games, you should come out with $995,000 provided you are playing perfectly (which isn't hard to do given the small number of possible hands). Various house rules of course lower or raise the odds. Card counting, of course, is the way to go if you want to even the odds but it won't work on 8 decks and, to even the odds, single deck games only give a 6-5 payout on black jacks (rather then the expected 3-2).

At the end of the day, your odds are pretty close to 50-50 provided you play well, and you can get a lot of free booze complements of the house (down in vegas)

Pocker of course is the best way to earn money because, unlike blackjack, you are playing against other players, not the house and thus, your odds are as good as anyone elses so it comes down to skill. Of course the house takes a cut so the table loses overall, but, generally, if you want to earn money gambeling you need to find a game where you compete against other people and get bloody good at it
