What? Nintendo is doing anime? So we're going to see Mario with 10 tentacle penis fingers and the Princess as a age old Sex Ninja that must fornicate with the evil Goombas and King Bowser in order to save the world from evil?
(I would've linked this little bit right up but I'm at work and can't remember them offhand:D)
I think they're talking about single server (or single "universe") games. Everquest and DAOC and all them only host about 3,000 people on each server or "universe".
Most likely though, this game is not a concurant world, it's probably instanced it most cases, where the play areas are split off from the rest of the world much like Gunbound where there's basically different chat channels that you can join games in (which, once in game, you no longer exist on the server).
As a minor side note, Eve Online is the only US based game that runs a single server, single universe game (largest online population) which is probably why they picked that one (there's many lesser known korean games, japan, etc).
At least I don't hear anything (yet) about a WWII mod. The next person who tries to shove D-Day/WWI/WWII/Vietnam, or any derivative thereof down my pants will recieve a severe beating culminating in years of painful, painful torture.
That would be great and fine and all if ANYONE could turn this game around from this point. Have you ever played in a MMORPG beta?
There's certain things that can be cleaned up, fixed, tuned, etc. before release but if they're going to gold it in another 3 months there is NO WAY in it's current state polish, a wax or even a full body massage on the game is going to fix it in it's current state.
Either don't expect to see this game on the shelf come Jan. or don't expect it to be even half finished (which seems to be a pretty common problem in most MMO releases these days).
I'm just giving my unbridled opinion of the current state of the game, take it as you will:) (if I played it:D.
Let's pretend I'm in the beta, not saying that I am or not. Let's also pretend that I tried the game out.
I'm not quite sure HOW this game managed (if I played it) to be so horribly outdated considering the last movie came out last year. I mean, if I saw something like the graphics in the game (if I saw them) I would think I'm playing a combination of Neocron and PONG. Because that's about where I'd place them. On an ATI Radeon 9800 pro.
Bugs, bugs more bugs, horrible HORRIBLE framerate (if you're graphics suck so much, how did they manage to drop the framerate so badly? it's supposed to be sci-fi not magic and swords). Medicore gameplay, unbalanced issues and a tank load of other things (that could or could not be in the game at this moment).
Unless there was some magic pill THEY were taking to whip this game up to speed in the time span of 4 months, I can't see this game getting past the bargain bin.
Credentials (games I've played/playing)
- Anarchy Online
- Neocron
- Rubies of Eventide
- World of Warcraft
- SWG
- DAOC
- Ultima Online
- Shadowbane
- etc, etc, etc
If I knew anything about this game and was in beta and tried it out for a full week before uninstalling it, I'd say don't buy it...ever. Looks to me (IMHO) like Blizzard are the only people out there without their head up their ass in terms of realizing people are pretty sick of the bullshit and unfinished games most MMORPG companies have been piling on. Latest release of Anarchy Online expansion was a TOTAL waste considering nothing was actually AVAILABLE upon release (and some stuff STILL isn't).
I pirate things I could possibly like, back in the days of shareware, this wasn't required to taste a game before you bought it.
So nowadays I'll grab something off BT and see if I like it, if I do, I'll buy it, if not, in the delete bin it goes. The reason I do this is because:
a) I live in a rural area, I don't feel like taking an hour drive just to grab a game.
b) I like my content on demand, including movies and games. I like to play/see things as SOON as possible. I'm getting old and tired of waiting 5 bazillion weeks for the movie to hit my theater (which I'll go and see...even with all the goddamn commercials anyway) so I download it first.
c) Sometimes games are so old, or so hard to get ahold of there's no other choice. Why wait when you have such a short time to live? I don't feel regret because I pay for what I keep, sounds fair to me:)
-They have NO hype for commercials, internet advertisements or even the occasional popup.
-They have NO credibility in the gaming community overall
-No major, minor or even INDEPENDENT names that I know of have backed them or stated they're planning to in the future
-Their CEO is known to be, by and large, an asshat and possibly the only person the company
-They have a couple million in debt with all the above and their plan is to produce a console which in order for us to keep playing on they HAVE to stay in business
So how exactly did they plan on going anywhere except to perhaps Cuba? Africa? Some other country that won't export them?
I've garnered most of my opinions on this from hardocp, PA and other misc sources btw
For those morons who are screaming "OMG BLIZZAARD IS A MONIEZ MACHINE",
Fileplant has been offering subscribers first crack at stuff FOREVER. Since they started subscribing, they had subscriber only offers. Blizzard gets not part of this, they PAY to have their stuff hosted there and panned out to the masses. If you don't like the fileplant downloads, subscribe, if you don't want to subscribe, don't bitch about it.
I vote for another video game channel, one much like G4 (techtv) except with ALL video games ALL the time.
And I don't mean the pansy ass players they currently have on where random nub team 1 fights random nub team 2 and we're forced to watch them play Soul Cal 2 using basic attacking only...repeatedly...and then the opponent losing to these awesome tactics...
He was right in his basic principles, CoH does not take a huge timesink (although time is relative;) ) it doesn't take a whole lot of time to "do something" in the game vs. pretty much every other game on the market. Even in the more power oriented games it takes some time for setup and adventuring whereas I could literally log on and fight a few criminals as SOON as I started playing.
He didn't say anything about YOU liking it personally, it's an opinion, much like every other post in existance. I will admit though, I found the character creation more fun than playing the game:P
I don't play it anymore, but I recommend it to those who were thinking about just trying it out:)
They already did this, it's called Neverwinter Nights. It didn't take off too well because of buggy tools and engines even though the players had nearly full control over them. Persistant worlds like these exist now because of the hard work of a few individuals and the ones that are up consist mainly of people who are going to stick around (another early problem was people setting up worlds and then leaving a month later).
Anyhow, your idea has already been turned into a reality, go explore it.
How did this get modded informative??? This is the same bullshit whiney complaints that troll every other board in MMO existance.
Ban eBay sales? Yeah, that'll do a whole (ige.com) freaking (playerauctions.com) lot (irc, aim, make friends, etc.). Not to mention the fact that a couple MILLION dollars are made off eBay sales every year, soon to reach into the hundred million mark. Area specific servers? What for? Are you racist? Because that's the only reason I see for telling people they HAVE to play on one server or another. My friends in Japan/China can't play on my North American server? Why the fuck not? Why can't I play on theirs?
If anything, this post should've been modded "Moronic".
I saw it played last night, it had MUCH improved physics and gameplay. Previously I, along with many of my friends had put it out of mind because it was considered a "n00b" game to anyone with real gaming talent.
Now it's got real recoil, a semi-interactive environment and lots of fancy effects. Even the flashbang got upgraded to a "real" flashbang, not only blinding you but also disorienting your sounds where all you hear is a ringing noise (mostly true, it disorients your senses).
You can even throw crap on top of the bomb to help prevent counter terrorists from defusing it. Smoke grenades actually make people's models harder to see, not just deploy smoke in the area (think a small amount of invisibility almost), and entering the smoke not only blocks your visions slightly, the gamma lowers on your screen so it looks darker, and GRADUALLY to make it more realistic.
Anyhow there was quite a bit added, it makes me drool in anticipation for HL2:)
If I worked at an arcade and my boss didn't pay me because I played games in my spare time, I'd be kinda angry (as long as I did my job)...wouldn't you?
As far as I've heard, there's not a single case in the entire WORLD where a EULA has held up in a case of virtual property disputes.
China and Korea have actually passed laws saying that virtual items can and DO have values. All lawsuits brought to court in the US have so far been thrown out in favor of the virtual property seller or...in one case...dissappeared because of the defendant harvesting cheap illegal labor in other countries (*cough* blacksnow inc. *cough*)
There are those of us that have been following VR property laws for some time and our predictions are that slow as the US might be, they will eventually adopt the same general laws as China/Korea in the matters of VR property (legal and a valid form of commerce).
Just a matter of time.
For those of you intellectually stimulated enough to want to delve more into the world of MMOGs, join the blog at http://terranova.blogs.com/ and the many links from their site.
You will be assimilated, resistance is futile.
Do not pass go, do not collect $200, in fact, we need your spleen and your left lung if it's not too much trouble.
I for one, hope that EA is like some kind of dying start, where it's gravity gets more intense as it gets full and they eventually explode all over the place.
It doesn't make any sense to NOT release a game that's doing so amazingly well hundreds of thousands of people are willing to download cracked/hacked versions of it.
Now I'm just waiting for them to fess up that they can and do keep track of their transactions so people who sell virtual items from video games can make a living without worrying half as much about young immature scammers:)
Isn't a good solution to most of these problems to hire more good quality people? The game industry JUST seems to be pulling out of the old "hire straight out of college" binge because with all the competition they're starting to see games flop...horribly.
Does it cost more money? Probably. Will it save you money in the longrun? My crystal ball points to "You bet your ass it will".
Quantity + Low Quality + Crunch Time Quantity + Good Quality + No Crunch Time

I can't wait for these to come to the PC...HOURS AND HOURS OF PRON!
:)
I'll never leave my house again
I bet most people here are about average on that scale, I know I am (except the...oooo...radeon 9800).
Aside from that, OpenGL? Yeah, I use OpenGL for HL because if I try to use D3D it crashes.
Way to go steam. I use D3D for everything else though currently.

So let me get this straight...
-They have NO hype for commercials, internet advertisements or even the occasional popup.

Well put, I personally have had a fileplanet account for almost two years now and therefore don't know how bad the "normal" downloads are.
Downloading the file through my "personal" subscriber server though was easy quick and fast (I use Opera btw).
