CS: Source Half-Life's Only Multiplayer

James DeSimas writes "Halflife2.net was able to get an exclusive interview with Chuck Osborn from PCGamer. In the interview he found out that Counter-Strike: Source is indeed the only Multiplayer for Half-Life 2." This comes on the heels of the news that PC Gamer will feature a special HL2 Review in its upcoming issue. Full Steam and Retail packaging details about the game are also available from many sources today as well.

The real trick is you have to start playing dirty :D In Normal you can basically run in guns blazing, but on Legendary you really have to take it much more slowly - pop out and shoot for a second, then duck for cover until your shields recharge... you spend most of the game hiding.

The other thing is you will start (or I did) using all the alien weapons... On normal I never used the plasma pistol (the one you can charge up) or the needler, but on Legendary those became weapons of choice. The needler is actually probably the best weapon on Legendary because a lot of the time you can't afford to stick around and aim, the enemies drop your shields too fast - but with the needler you don't have to.

The plasma pistol is good because a charged shot will drop an Elites shields instantly, which is important because they recharge just like you do, so you can't simply whittle them down by popping out from time to time.

The final tip is to get real good with the pistol... it is a seriously overpowered weapon, and a few head shots with it will drop anything.

It is definitely doable, I've done it, my brother has done it, and my friends have done it - and some of us them be classed as great players... The problem is after a bit of practice co-op isn't hard enough anymore... Bungie needed to put in a special co-op Legendary mode that upped the difficulty a bit.

Reseting everything back to the starting point makes each instance of reality stand as being meaningful and potentially memorable as a whole. Definitely the best part of the whole thing is that you start with everybody back in the same spot, so when you play on public servers there is a certain amount of forced teamwork that is virtually impossible in games like Battlefield where everybody ends up scattered all over the entire map and the whole thing ends up feeling very disconnected.

The best way to play CS imo is on any 'rush' server where the time limit is around 3 minutes forcing the attacking team to blitz, many of the maps are balanced so well that this is actually an advantage to the attacking team where the natural tendency to be scared and hang back actually hurts them because they get picked off one at a time rather then just showing up in force.

Counter-Strike is great for a few primary reasons:

      1) teamplay. play on a casual clan server, it's a blast. play on a random shitty server and it can be god awful. Having an actual goal gives a lot more dynamic to the game over just "run around shooting stuff".

      2) death matters. You actually have to put some effort into survival. This makes fights more tense. As does the fact that you die easily - no more sitting there spamming each other in the face for 2 minutes before someone dies. If you stick your neck out carelessly, you're gonna die for it, and you're gonna sit there bored for 2 minutes thinking about how stupid it was.

      3) money. you're rewarded for doing well by getting more money to buy better guns, which then help you continue to do well. it's hard to quit when you have $5000 left to buy a kickass gun :)

      4) things like voice chat and good spectator modes make the wait for the next round quite enjoyable. Talk to your friends while watching your teammates and rooting for them to win. It's like watching football without the smell of B.O.

I definitely understand the reluctance to play a game where you have to wait for the next round to start. But I got so frustrated with CTF games where I would have to kill the same guy (from full health+armor+guns) three times on my way in and out of the enemy base. By the time I tried counter-strike I loved it - killing people actually kept them out of your way until completed the goal. From there, CS has a few seriously major things going for it. For me, the single biggest factor is the game's movement stability and believability, which is more or less consistent across all half-life engine games. All the other multiplayer games I've attempted to get into have serious stability issues with the movement of other players, warping slightly around, eratically changing speeds in fake looking ways, choppy movement, etc. Call of duty was actually pretty good in this regard, but that was actually too much like CS except that it was even easier, and virtually neccesary, to camp. I'm actually able to score in the top 3 regularly using just an MP5 and rush/flank techniques, which is somewhat realistic in the terrorist/counterterrorist realm of combat, and admitedly, I really only play a small number of maps where thats a valid option, I don't like the long corridor sniping maps.

If they can preserve that good netcode, in combination with the very solid feel of the counterstrike weapons, and provide more excellently balanced maps, while simultaneously bringing the game up to more modern standards, CS: Source is going to be a big big deal compared to Doom 3's very sloppy feeling chop fest.

Valve has focused on Counter-Strike Source because, regardless of your fanboy moanings, Counter-Strike is still the most popular online multiplayer game, BY FAR. Why would they waste time on doing some crappy deathmatch when they've got far more successful products to develop?

In addition, there aren't many deathmatch multiplayer games coming out because they're not fun. They've been beaten to death. Quake3 and UT were only mild successes. I bought Quake3 the day it came out, but hardly ever played it multiplayer. When I tried, it was hard to find servers with people on them, particularly for the mods that seemed interesting.

Most companies wanting to do multiplayer games right now are trying to go the route of far more lucrative and "new" (hard to say original) massively multiplayer online RPGs, with monthly fees. No one wants to be stuck with a successful game with a large and loyal fan base who continue expecting regular updates and bugfixes despite the company no longer receiving money to do so.

I think the move to specialized well-done multiplayer games over the reliance on mods to fill out a contentless game engine is a great move for the gaming industry. I think games like CS:Source, UT2004, BF1942, and I expect before long, Team Fortress 2, are a better style of games than MMORPG.

I still have yet to plunk down 50$ for a game that I have to keep paying another $10-$20 a month to keep playing though - I don't want to feel like I'm paying for every hour whether I'm playing the game or not. I *already* spend too much time playing games online :)

I do agree a HL port to the Source engine was a good idea, but is it me, or is it likely this only delayed the game further?

Relax, it happens all the time. And of course, if you dare mention it you are 'trolling', it's the only way that the mod junta can keep dissent in line - punish those who complain as an example to others :)

Seriously though, I know how annoying it is when posts just 'disappear'. It's happened to me a few times after I've written epic posts... nowadays I make sure to just Ctrl-C anything of length that I write in case it all goes belly-up when I click 'submit'.

As for the mods... if you want a real laugh write something thoughtful about how Apple is an ordinary company that wants to make money just as much as Microsoft does, and watch the mod-censors move in with ruthless efficiency and terminate you, while every reply disputing your claims receives '+5 insightful'.
