Fantasy often has people running around in what's pretty much medieval Europe, having that at the same time as sufficiently advanced technology is... unlikely. You could argue that there was an intelligent designer who created a world exactly like that, using sufficiently advanced technology to create the appearance of magic in a world that doesn't even know steam power (Strata, anyone?) but Sci Fi would still try to elaborate that while Fantasy considers it done by saying "a wizard did it".
Well, it caused some uproar when people suspected that the VS mode was developed at the same time as the main game but cut from the final release and sold separately to add a 5$ insult to the 60$ injury of current generation gaming.
Yeah, from what I read the German implementation only requires ISPs to retain the connection data to their service, i.e. when someone was connected, what IP he had then, etc. Stuff you'd have thought they were retaining anyway. For phones the requirement is to retain a log of all phonecalls, again something I'd expect them to do for billing and traffic analysis alone already. What did get people up in arms was the idea to install malware to monitor computers but the guy who proposed that seems to be enamoured with the idea of rebuilding the Reich anyway.
Of course I might have missed some later additions if they happened. Wish the Brits good luck with their web browsing logging and hope the citizenry will get some HTTP noise makers (connecting to random websites a lot) to make the logs truly useless.
Yes, the Earth has been warmer. It has also been without billions of humans on its surface. Just because it's happened in the past doesn't mean we want to see it happen again.
Our first problem is dealing with our crops and stuff, those aren't as tolerant to different climates as humans, lowering our food output is not going to go well for many million people. It doesn't have to cause major disasters, all that's needed is to hurt our harvests and reduce the food production more than we can deal with, then we've got starvation. Of course it probably won't hit the western nations much, we've got a surplus of food (that can get lost later on but I think that'll take a few centuries) but most of the human population live in poorer countries where they have enough trouble feeding people with the harvests they get.
Because they would want to know what exactly the enemy has in case a war breaks out. Hell, even if it's a satellite that could already give data about any future satellites they might launch.
Also if all they have is single missiles the US anti-nuke systems should be adequate, they have trouble with full volleys but an early attack would leave NK without much to launch (no idea how far along their warhead production is). The only problem are those artillery emplacements around Seoul, no idea how feasible it is to launch a lightning strike on those with near-simultaneous impacts to wipe them out before any shots can be fired, missiles might be trackable for too long before they hit. I doubt the NKs have emplacements the US hasn't registered yet. Also makes one wonder how far along those anti-artillery lasers are and if they could be used to stop any projectiles (probably would have to deal with a much smaller barrage if the emplacements get destroyed fast enough) that do manage to get fired.
And the modified client could just do the same thing except do the hashing on a copy of the original executable instead of the one that's actually running.
You know, it _doesn't matter_ if the Mexicans crossing the border were smuggling pot or not. Just because this van contained a benign payload, doesn't mean the next one will.
Sounds valid to me, you don't want smugglers to get across your borders unchecked, no matter what they transport or if they're even just saying hello to their aunt. A vulnerability is a vulnerability, whether it's being exploited or not.
The guy with the biggest stick of course. That's how society works, he who has the sticks gets to decide what's right or wrong, always has been like that. Why else is there a police other than to make sure the laws passed by the government are also de-facto laws by using sticks to enforce them? Why else is there a military other than to have a big stick at hand when someone else needs a good whacking?
Nukes aren't the only case of might makes right in the world, there are many other levels at which that happens.
Yeah except arming yourself with nukes is a good way to get noticed by the nuclear powers for some whack-a-mole. If you think the risk of attack is large then wait until you've got them seriously assuming that you'll be a threat soon (and building up a nuclear stockpile isn't trivial, that takes time in which you can be attacked).
Preventing cheating is more like DRM, you give the user's system information but restrict how that information can be used and the user can cheat simply by using that data in a way that's not intended.
I've only seen one upside to dubbing so far: Star Trek Voyager Elite Force apparently didn't have the original cast doing the voices in the English version but the German version had the German voice actors of the TV show so it had the voices you'd know from TV.
I'll go for a remote emergency off switch. That way noone can disable it. To prevent interference the signal transmission will consist of a steel object with a.50 inch diameter being propelled at very high velocity towards the logic circuitry of the robot.
I'd counter that with a list of games that look like ass and play like it too but that list would be so long I'd be unable to compile it. How you think XIII, WindWaker, ED, Ico or SOTC belong on the list is completely beyond me. You haven't seen bad graphics if you think those are examples. I'm talking about the no-effort slapped together garbage that populates 90% (approximation using Sturgeon) of the retail shelves. Stuff like the various Petz games, almost the entire catalog of Midas Interactive, Data Design Interactive and Neko Entertainment. Yes, those have a small number of games that are worth it but they have so much garbage that it's better to ignore them by default and only look at the ones you hear good things about. The overwhelming majority of games that look like ass do so because the developer is incompetent or just didn't care and put a similar effort into all other parts of the game.
In a toy war like Iraq the only rule is "look good for the press".

And in geek circles we just use SI prefixes without any regard to history.
"don't stand under a fragile ceiling when the quake happens"
Yeah, you can't protect the architecture but you can protect the people and possibly some amount of carry-on luggage.
The directive sounds like the memberstates can determine what duration they want as long as it's between .5 and 2 years.

Don't worry, at the rate the RIAA is working we'll have the planet frozen solid in a few more years.
And? Let's see NK try to stop the US from salvaging that secretly.

Does that really need more justification?

Because people who play twitchy arena FPSes are known for their appreciation of train simulators...

Well, you could give the Quebecians the French PAL version, would be funny for console games with their region lock...
How about simply weighting "do not interfere with the actions of humans" higher than "avoid damage to self"?
I'll go for a remote emergency off switch. That way noone can disable it. To prevent interference the signal transmission will consist of a steel object with a .50 inch diameter being propelled at very high velocity towards the logic circuitry of the robot.
Now it just needs to synthesize a "cure" for humanity and test it...
