Well PSO does have action, learning boss patterns, dodging stuff, etc, it just had a sloooooow exp curve. Calling it a glorified chatroom isn't really warranted. Most MMOs I've seen do have really dumb combat (usual response by veterans is "play to level X!" but if the early levels aren't fun, why should I expect the developer to be competent enough to make the later ones work?) and you can very well chat while fighting. Try that in one of the action RPGs with online play (Diablo, Hellgate or PSO, none of these are massive IMO) and you get raped three ways to sunday.

if there exist invisible super-beings, then there's no way to tell!

If you define them in a way that prevents telling, that is. There are more ways to detect an entity than mere vision, especially if that entity is supposedly very powerful. We could detect such an entity by its effect on the universe. However the official stance on God seems to be that he's not doing anything lately.

Lack of evidence does not prove nonexistence but it makes it highly likely that assuming existence is a waste of time. Especially when you're arguing there is something that makes no difference but it's absolutely central to your life and should be to everyone else's. You have no reason to even consider the existence of such an entity (nor do you have to consider the existence of invisible monsters under your bed).

AFAIK the pope is basically a representative, his word is no more the word of God than the words of G.W. Bush are the word of the people of the US. He is recognized to be in charge and is assumed to be acting on behalf of God but he's not a puppet that just repeats God's words.

  21. Re:Hmmmmm on What's the Best Game Console of All Time? · · Score: 1

Really, less graphics mean better gameplay? I didn't notice that since games got a lot better while their graphics improved too. Controls got better (air control when jumping is a HUGE improvement), gameplay got more varied (once games could actually have levels that were more than just an increased number of enemies), frustrating gameplay got killed off, saves were introduced to allow for games that would last you longer than one sitting and at some point devs even understood that saving doesn't need to be punished, the concept of a story in a game was no longer absurd, etc. Most old games are unintuitive, frustrating and repetitive.

Super Mario Galaxy was reviewed as the best game ever (averaging scores, while it has a lower average than OOT now it was above OOT when it had an equal number of reviews). Yet its graphics are better than any of its predecessors. Mario 64 is crap compared to SMG. Some may miss the exploration but the level design got much better in exchange.

Just wondering... What's the big deal with this whole "showing your papers" fear? What's the problem with being able to tell someone who you are or having a policeman know your name? You already have to identify yourself for loads of things like voting, bank transfers or even logging into your computer (and who'd be so insane as to claim these identifications are unnecessary?). And do you really think a policeman has no way of finding out who you are if you don't carry a piece of paper with your name on it?

Yeah, sure, because protectionism is the only reason to have guarantees end when the machine is operated outside of spec. Overclocking can easily result in damage to the chip, why would anyone give a warranty on a chip that's operated at a voltage it's not designed for? Why would anyone guarantee your computer will keep working if you replace the OS with who knows what? If you know what you're doing, fine, continue but don't complain about warranties when it turns out you didn't.
