    I agree. You may also consider negotiating for something they do have -- time. I am a serial start-up employee and have successfully negotiated four day work weeks at the last two companies I've worked for.

    As the parent says, don't lose sight of the financials of the new company. Also, in my experience, most start-ups are missing one or more of the key ingredients to success (sales and marketing, leadership and vision, technical execution). I have found that a start up that really recognizes the importance of sales and marketing has a shot at being around for awhile.

    BTW, I think this article/question is a great advertisement for living beneath your means in a significant way. If the poster has paid down a significant portion of his home and not gotten addicted to the lavish lifestyle he can currently afford, he would probably not be asking /. for advice, but rather taking the plunge.

    Go for it! Live!

    I consider myself to a competent developer with some SQL skills and bit of DBA knowledge albeit mainly in MSSQLServer.

    I am looking forward to PostgreSQL maturing relative to the windows port. Let's hope the team feels the same way!!

    Although I was a National Merit Scholar and had an SAT score of 1540 (800 Verbal/740 Math), I couldn't hack it, since (A) Math has given me nightmares ever since one particularly awful Calc teacher in HS, and (B) in 20 years of coding, I've never had a need for any math higher than Trig, and Trig only once.

    This proves it! They've made the SAT easier. Back in the day, anyone who scored 700+ in Math on the SAT would have been eager and capable of tackling these classes,

    * FOUR (yes, count 'em, FOUR) levels of Calc.
    * Engineering Math

    He recommended doing a good job on your job. Look for a better job if need/want to. And let this be the only risk you take with that company.

    Take your risk capital and place focused investments in serval other companies.

    The biggest danger with stock options is to _ever_ assume that they will be worth anything except as a fire starter. Manage expectations down. If, in the rare case, they hit, then fantastic. Cash in half and throw a small party.
