We just got a new PC for my mom. She uses it mostly for e-mail and usual business stuff, plus games like CivIII, SimCity 3000, nothing that really needs a lot of horsepower. Our specs were:

XP 2600($94), Abit NF7-S($91), 512MB Ram($92), GeForce4 MX440($39), DVD-RW ($149), plus a LCD monitor and video capture card that pushed the price a bit over $1000. What's suprising though, is that the DVD drive ended up being the most expensive thing to go into the box.

Most people definitely don't need the top of the line models. Even my friend who is a gamer said he is probobly not going to go all-out for the best components. I keep wondering who these people are that keep buying Opterons or Athlon64s.

I just bought a new computer, and AMD's offerings confused the hell out of me. I'm a computer geek, but I'd been tinkering with Linux for a few years, and hadn't paid attention to new hardware. When I looked at new hardware this week, I found AMD had spawned half a dozen chips and at least three sockets. It was bad enough that you had to search for the best Intel CPU/Motherboard set and compare it with the best AMD combo, now you have to see which socket's best price/performance ratio suits you.

While this decision by Intel is for the "Enterprise" market instead of the home market, I really wish AMD would simplify their sockets so that I can at least compare chips without worrying about motherboards, and vice-versa.

  5. Military Applications on Operation Moon Bounce · · Score: 2, Interesting

I haven't finished reading through the article, but I remember reading about this in one of James Bamford's book about the NSA, "Body of Secrets" or "The Puzzle Palace". Basically, when you bounce a directional radio beam off the moon, it can't be intercepted by anyone except those near the place on Earth where the beam bounces back to. This would allow Navy ships at sea to send a message from the open ocean, to the moon, then to Washington without having the message picked up by the Russians. Pretty neat trick, actually.

The reason this was in Bamford's book was that the USS Liberty, the Navy eavesdropping ship that was attacked by the Israelis in 1967, had this type of system on board and it was its primary method of communicating with the NSA people in the US. Unfortunately, the system was unreliable, and the hydraulics or pnumatics controlling the directional antenna often broke, making it unusable. Partly because of this, the ship never got the message to stay away from the conflict zone and was bombed. That's how I remember it, at least.

Maybe that's the danger of relying too much on bleeding-edge technology.

Anyone here heard of other stories of this technology?

I don't want to link to his site off of Slashdot because they're big files, but if you're motivated, you can go find it yourself(enter his name into Google) ; )He has done one feature film, "One Hour Photo" with Robin Williams.

Michael Moore has directed some music videos, notably Rage Against the Machine's "Testify" and "Sleep Now In The Fire", plus System of a Down's "BOOM", and a R.E.M. video. Whether you like him or not, he does have a style that might be more approachable, since he tends to use a lot of stock footage edited together instead of filming a lot of scenes specifically. "Testify" is really 'Moore-esqe', it consists of video footage from TV and old movies spliced together with the band to make a satirical political message. It was released in 2000, and contains a pro-Nader message. "Sleep Now I The Fire" is a live 'concert' played in front of the New York Stock Exchange where the police got called and broke it up. Not something an amatuer filmmaker could do, but still funny, especially the stockbrokers rocking out : )

I can think of some other good videos, but don't know their directors - Beck's "Loser", Rammstein's "Ich Will", Beastie Boy's "Sabotage", Alice in Chain's "Jeremy", and Tori Amos' "Rasberry Swirl". Not sure if this helps, but it can't hurt to watch these, and it'll be fun : )

Damn, reading this discussions has been really depressing. Too many people have the attitude that "Well, everyone else should speak English, just like me". The whole point of Orkut is supposedly to allow networking of friends - what's the point, if it's going to force you not to speak your native toungue?

To me, it seems like bad design to begin with. Why can't you filter out posts based on language, if they don't want people to be bothered by other languages? It's something I think they should have thought of when they were designing a "social network" - Google handles multi-language search pretty well, so it's not like they'd never dealt with the issue before.

The fact is, most of the world doesn't speak English, at least among themselves. Why should they use a second or third language to talk to their friends on a "social networking" site? It's perfectly understandable that you should speak English in a thread started in English, but why should you stop people from speaking their native language in their own threads?

Yes, English is the "lingua franca" of the internet, it's very useful when communicating between two people who don't speak the same native language. That doesn't mean you should be forced to speak it with your friends when you'd rather speak another language.

In The Beginning Was The Command Line by Neal Stephenson is a good overview of the culture of Linux, Macintosh, Be, and Microsoft in essay form. I've given it to non-computer geeks to teach them about Linux, and why it's different from windows. He talks about how modern society tries to impose a false image over everything to make things easier to deal with(like Disney) and compares that to the GUI vs. CLI differences. I don't agree with everything he says, but Stephenson is definitely a great writer, and he has the book available free at the link I put in.
