So, basically your argument is "OMG, something bad might somehow happen!"? Perhaps we should all just revert to the freakin' stone age because all that other technology might have some side effect.
Yeah, burning all the fossil fuels is much better. No long term effects from that at all. And by the way, I wouldn't call what happened in Japan an "accident". More of a severe natural disaster. Unless you consider things like Katrina to be accidents as well.
Your user name is ironic! The moons would be "seeded" with very low level life such as bacteria. I think the bacteria that is here with us now will have a better shot at attacking us then the ones we plant on another world, esp after they have to adapt to the extreme conditions there unlike the local strains that can spend all their time trying to take advantage of humans. Oh hell, I'm drunk and seem to be writing in run on sentences...
I mean this in all seriousness, not as a troll or flamebait. After a reasonable look for indigenous life on the other planets, why not seed them with earth life? It seems unlikely that adapting to them would make the life we left there harmful to us and with just a little genetic engineering perhaps we can seed them in such a way to start rudimentary terraforming. Or even better, perhaps the bit of life we plant there will survive until the sun expands and the other planets/moons pass through the habitable zone and with the leg up we gave them by putting them there evolve into sentience with the time they would have. Sorry, distracted by wild imagination there. The question is, why not add life to lifeless worlds if we can? What harm could it do?
I was just reading about them a few weeks ago. Apparently they are intentionally engaging in channel drift in an attempt to capture more market share. That is one of the reasons they went to SyFy (others cited were spelling and punctuation confusion, yeah right). This is also where the very non-sci-fi programming is coming from (ghost hunting reality shows? wtf?).
Seems to me that this is the end for them. They decided to dump their niche market viewers to try to compete for the larger mainstream audience. I doubt they will capture enough of it. See also: TLC - formerly know as the learning channel.
My bad, not a fetus yet. Fertalized cell clump thingy... You know what I mean. No doubt this guy will pick apart the details instead of getting the point.
Oops! God is the biggest fetus aborter around. I'm too lazy to google it up for you, but some large percentage of fertalized eggs fail to attach in the womb. That's a fairly unintelligent design if it's a sin to kill a couple of cells.
Ah, that was a great question and a good answer. I'm filled with hope about the/. community.
However, the answer given does bother me a little. The question was, how to measure how far away a star was, and an answer about red shift and what's know about what we can see close by... afaik, what we see close by is stars of various sequence and their light spectrum emmisions. Then we use the red shift caused by them moving away from our view point to calculate the rate of motion.
I'm having trouble figuring out if there is enough information here. The difference in wavelength of the light we see would certainly tell us the relative speed, but I don't see how that gives us a distance. It seems to me that we asssume the uniform expansion of the universe, thus the further away something is the greater the red shift and thus greater distance. I wonder how uniform the expansion is and how we measure that...
And yes, I have a tendancy to post while intoxicated. It seems like I've heard a good explaination of this before, yet I can't seem to wrap my head around it now...
I'm not even going to bother to read this thread or article, as I've seen it enough times already. May I ask, what is Google doing that is soooo evil? I'm just not seeing it. They make thier service available in China according to local laws and constraints.
Big Fucking Deal.
To be clear, what part of that is evil? Did they make the rules that they must comply with? Is it because you all seem to think they have some crazy obligation to change the world with a freakin' search engine? Oh, I know, the Chinese can use the regular version of google. Google doesn't stop them from doing that. Their "government" does. At least the have a little something with what google provides them now. An index to the info that they're allowed to know about it now easily searchable! Oh, wait, that's evil for sure. So again, what did google do that was evil? How does it compare to the big pile of goods you have in your house manufactured in China? Who's supporting what here? Sorry for the discenting opinion, but my karma's already as bad as it can get, so I can express a different view without fear of further reprisal. And since I'm so late to the thread, I'm not going to proof or worry about anyone reading this.
Haha! That's me right now! After the last guy just like that. I can smell the death on their server setup - I've been begging for the cash to build a new one, parallel to the first from the gound up, as this one is beyond my ability to fix and they won't tolerate downtime (yeah, I know!)... So I'm outta there, and I've been asked to find a new amatuer for them. Only another week, I hope it holds together that long!
Well, duh. You use to new sun device to speed to combination of the Chenjesu and the Mmrnmhrm. Then when the Chmmr emerge, ask them about fusion. That's step 2. There must be a step 1.5 or 2.5 or something.... this isn't right!
Ah, I can't get into this flamewar, I'll get too excited. So here's the comic relief:
Takei: Let's take 'em out with us. Do you guys have a self-destruct code? Like "destruct sequence 1-A, 2-B, 3--"
[Bender's head explodes, leaving some wires, coils and his mouth poking out of his body.]
Bender: Thanks a lot, Takei, now everybody knows!
I agree. What we need is some sort of system to allow users to rate the accuracy of moderation. Sort of a meta-moderation. Then moderators that do a good job could be identified and rewarded.
Naw, that would never work! I'm smokin' crack. Nevermind.
Oh, wait, perhaps you just drink shitty beer out of a can. Sorry. You should just shell out the extra buck or drink less. Cheaping out means you have a drinking problem. You junkie you.
Never a miscommunication!
So, basically your argument is "OMG, something bad might somehow happen!"? Perhaps we should all just revert to the freakin' stone age because all that other technology might have some side effect.
I'll insert it in my reading que. Thanks.
but this is one race to the bottom I'm pleased with.
More SIM card designs = more times you will have to replace your SIM card = more money spent.
Smaller SIM cards are also easier to lose, hard to keep a handle on, when you use your SIM with multiple phones
Don't forget us poor world travelers who will get screwed when suddenly we have to find the correct sim card size to get our phones to work locally.

Clearly they simply test the urine to look for vaccines...
We all know about correlation and causation!

Looks like the thread is out of order. this reply obviously goes here.

Oh, and right after I hit submit I saw a reference to guiness, which is good and comes in a can. Oops.
