Fear of Girls, a D&D Documentary

FhnuZoag writes "Google Video is hosting the short film 'Fear of Girls', written and directed by Ryan Wood. The film is a hilarious 'documentary' dealing with a pair of self-declared elite table-top roleplayers. The film has already appeared at a variety of fringe events, but here's a chance to see it for free and online from a server that probably can survive a slashdotting." Allright, so it's not that funny, but since I'm off to play D&D this afternoon, it tickled me.

2- Is it really that easy? yes and it has been for almost a decade now. Anyone with a copy of Adobe Premiere and a way to get video in (DV makes life really easy) has what it takes. I can set you up with everything you need to shoot a short of this quality for less than $1000.00 total. including camera, audio, lighting and editor. (Hint an old P4-1.2ghz machine with 512 meg of ram and a copy of Premiere6 thta can be had for dirt right now, coupled with a el-cheapo Canon DV camcorder, some shop lights, a painters pole and gaffers tape to hold a $59.00 audio technica shotgun microphone out there.)

Anyone with a desire to do this can do it easily. and if you already own a PC that is of decent speed (Even a PIII 1ghz will do it well) you already have most of the gear. (a pinnacle DV500 card with a copy of Premiere 6 and extra tools costs about $150.00 most places on the net right now.)

finally what gear you have means nothing. I know of a group that has 4 Canon XL1-HD cameras as well as a high end AVID editor with all the goodies and tens of thousands worth of gear and they suck horribly. Their video looks good but it's a nice and shiny turd.

Be that as it may, let me tell you about a true story from the early 1980s..

      insert TARDIS noises...

I started playing D&D (actually a totally bastardised version, as all we had for rules was about 50 pages photocopied from GMG and PG) in 1980, at Uni. During the 1980/81 long break, I told a good friend (a young lady I'd known for about 6 years, that is, since I was about 13) about it, and she thought it seemed a great thing.

Many (!!)years passed, and in 1986, circumstances were such that she actually managed to play with us. By that time we'd "graduated" to Rolemaster, but that doesnt dilute what follows. She rolled up a character (an evil caster) and eagerly joined in the game. Within 5 minutes she looked all confused. "What's the problem?" "When do we start sacrificing animals and stuff?" I had a moment of insight. "You mean like you want to kill real animals here and now, in Steve's living room?" "Oh, do we wait till night time to do that?" It was quickly explained that really the game was just a grown up version of "let's pretend". She was not convinced, but afeter the game session she told me that she'd got the impression form the media that it involved real satanic rituals and medieval witchcraft. She ended up eing a good player, and staying with the campaign for about 3 years.

Now this girl had a completely wrong idea about RPG due to certain right-wing extremists, and as she was one of those extreme rebel type people she thought D&D would be a great evil and anti-establishment thing. I have to wonder how many of these people that "go off the deep end" with RPG also start with a wrong idea what it's about, and don't get it straightend out? This little movie was funny but also touching and thought-provoking. These are two of societies gentle hermits. Many people, not just PRG nerds, live a seperated life, so it's of value to everyone to consider their situation. Habitual withdrawl from others is not good, although I won't try to support that here.

In high school the two men are shown to support each other to the point where all other relationships fell away from simple disuse. This support includes sexuality. Another possibility (not unrelated) is that they both attempted to reach out to others, and were so strongly rebuked that they did not try again. This is hinted at especially with their attempts to "attract" girls.

The really interesting point about this movie is that the only loving relationship seems to be between the two gamers. Everyone else is portrayed as hateful (but especially the women). It's not clear if this is actual mysogony on the part of the filmmakers or an attempt to show the viewer the world through a gamer's eyes. The brother seems to be genuinely concerned, but the exagerated emotion and the religious approbations would seem to be clear that his intentions aren't entirely kind.

Overall, this was an entertaining look at what isolation is like and hints about how it can come about.

Actually, I found playing the "gender roles" game to be highly annoying. Everything was giggles and winks in WoW. The flirtation made me uncomfortable as a man because I didnt want to gender play. I didn't want to act like a girl player. So I didnt respond to the guys who acted this way. And to be fair, most guys (including myself) are nicer to girl players just like we are nicer to girls in real life. Its part of our innate mating strategies.

Long story short: I made a female character for kicks and to check out all her parts not just her butt (and to play a hunter). I got her up to lev 10 or so and forgot about her for months. Later I needed a character for a quick and dirty guild formation so I got her up to speed. The guild was me, a bunch of strangers, and my female friend who had an alt at around my female characters level. We usually played together so I'm sure it came off as "sexy co-ed gamers" or somesuch. The guild ended up with a lot of RL female players. Its odd to see a group of 5 hot elf girls (the fake one being me) tearing up Ashenvale or that underwater instance there (sorry been a while). Long story short my real life female friend who've I've been playing with for ages announced in guildchat I'm male out of the blue. The funny thing is she did it out of jealousy after a lot of players were paying way too much attention to me. After that people weren't the same and it coincided with me getting sick of WoW again so I let that guild and character go back into storage. Its a stereotype, but women can be catty.

Interesting experience. I didn't get any cool gear or gold handed to me. Maybe because I was already in a guild and the guildmaster. But my female friend often got special attentions because she was playing her real gender and would flirt back, etc. So just being a female character isnt enough for gold and gear, contrary to public opinion.

So maybe you are right. Maybe a lot of guys who do this actually do gender play thus get the gold. I didn't and probably came off butch-ish, especially as I always led groups, gave orders, etc. Playing female wasn't bad. Sometimes it was fun but the novelty wore off and I wish I could ask the admins to change my gender so I can play a male lev 20+ character so I dont feel like I'm fooling anyone.

Not to mention the female night elf is hot. She's modeled after a stripper or something. At least her dance moves are. Now when I see male players playing females its just annoying. It feels like a deception. Its a game, but its also a social game. I feel like saying "Oh come on, its just us dudes here and our token four female players in the guild. Lets not get our hopes up while we play a networked video game on a friday night."

not sure I'd do it myself, especially having to deal with a pimp, but as a freelancer, there are probably plenty of guys who would be glad to. on the other hand, there are likely a fair number of women who wouldn't mind either, under the right conditions, though perhaps not as many, and perhaps they aren't as open about it in todays society, which whether you're one of those women or not, is a pretty solid example of a rediculous double standard.

I'd also like to note that while I'm not suggesting rape is acceptable, but a fair amount of women's fashion these days probably contributes to that (not blaming it on the victims at all here, but come on), and just the constantly being hit on. if a guy walks down the street without his shirt on, his friends will just laugh at him if some fat girl whistles. if a woman is wearing a skirt that is just barely long enough for her private areas to be hidden, and a shirt that leaves a 4 inch gap between itself and the skirt, she somehow seems to think she still has the right to complain about guys hitting on her. if you don't wear tight clothes/clothes that don't entirely cover your body, and you still get more attention than you would like, ok. as long as you're not being forced into anything though, I think the parent's point that I most recently quoted applies here; if you're getting hit on too much, sorry, but on the other side of the fence, most guys are expected to do absolutely everything themselves. yeah, it's more or less acceptable for a girl to ask out a guy, but very few of them actually do it! if you want us to stop making a move on every woman that interests us, make it reasonable for us to expect to be hit on ourselves once in a while. it's no picnic when it almost never happens either. "but". uh-oh, not a good start. so, earlier you said that women should quit whining about being hit on, and that men would love to be treated that way. implication: women should enjoy it instead of complaining. then something about prostitution, with similar implication. then comes the rape part, which you of course are not condoning, no no no, BUT if the tables were turned... well, all us dudes would sure love it, not like you whiny women... So you tell me, what is the obvious implication?
