Why go for the example 'books'. Why not other common names like 'windows' or 'apple'.

I still ask why there were .com, .net and .org. I will elaborate a bit more. Why aere ther .com, .net and .org next to the country codes?

It would have been better (hindsight is always 20/20) to just have gone with the country codes. That way each country would have been able to do whatever they please to do. Do you want to give nobody a domain? Good for you. Do you want to limit id to just your citizens or just businesses or to everybody who pays you? Great.

The argument against this is often what about things like linux.org or similar things. When I look at the whois data, I see a US addrss, so it would have been linux.us or even linux.org.us or linux.inc.us or whatever they want to come up with.

And while I am at it, the order of the domain should have been reversed. So instead of e.g. tech.slashdot.org.us, It would have been better to go for us.org.slashdot.tech as you then follow the tree. Even neater if there would have been no dots, but slashes instead:
http://us/org/slashdot/tech//directory/subdirectory/file.html (Please note the second double slashes to show where the domain ends and the file system begins.

Anyway, we can contemplate on what could have been, but now we have this mess and it will have to do.

I look at the headers and I have never seen an email that was NOT intended for me. That way I can happily ignore all the legal attachments that are used. The fact that the sender did not intend to send this to me is hardly of my concern. Perhaps I do not WANT to receive it, but that is also of no importance.

About not being able to register because some email is already use, I have a simple solution (simple for the /. crowd, perhaps not for everybody)

I have my own domain. I use the format theirdomain@example.com e.g. slashdot.org@example.com for this site. Those are all aliases. That way I can easily notice who has leaked my email.
    For one-time email, I use a semi-trowaway email that I change every year. e.g. 2013@example.com that I delete after a while.

When I do a trip, I like to have everything under one roof. e.g. Italy2013@example.com for my trip last year to Northern Italy.

Not only do I know who spams me, but it is very easy to filter and maintain (for a tech person). I am sure that you can get this for around 10USD per year if not cheaper.

However I suppose they will have different ranges for different purposes. e.g. Per type of machine. Per country. Per city. Per manufacturing date. Per whatever.
And that not even in OR/OR but in AND/AND. e.g. last range could be the country. There are say 200 countries in the world. That means 50+ unused numbers in one segment or already 20% less used. Obviously they could divide it differently and look per region e.g. US states is one, but Benelux is 1 and not three.

Still I am sure they will waste some as it is nice to have some 'in case of'. Not every range will be used.

Also if they have so many, they do not have to be careful about how they use them. They can 'waste' a lot.
