Without Stallman you likelyy wouldn't have a GNU/Linux. He would have used a different way to get there if possible. He did not state that he had this GNU and wanted to do something with it.

What he did was looking for a way to imitate Minix and then looked at what were the best tools. You do not name your system after your tools. It is House, not HammerAndNail/House.

Strange how effective those electronic debit machines are, even though they assume 100% uptime of the Visa/MC/Debit back end systems? What about your phone? Doesn't it assume 100% uptime of the call routers and connection?

Each and every one of them have been down at some point in time, meaning they do NOT assume 100% uptime (anymore).

So I can only agree that asuming 100% uptime is realy bad architecture. Aiming for 100% is another thing.

That way not only will they lure people to the store, they know people will spend more then that one song. Turning a loss, they can taxt deduct, into a profit.

The problem is, how would you do it otherwise? Send everybody a dollar? Perhaps in this case, the best thing would be to deduct 1 dollar of the phonebill.

But seriously, how do you expect companies to solve this? Say they have 5.000.000 customers they have handled wrongly and they get conviceted to pay back 5.000.000 USD if it is a one-off purchase? I know there are poeple who say that each of those customers should get the 1USD brought to them individually in a limo. However if you want to try to be reasonable, you will see that a voucher is the only option as it is illegal to send money by postal service.

    Any other solutions?

I can not believe that people can not design a paper where you use a pen to fill out a field and then put that through a scanner. It doesn't even have to be able to do OCR. Just determine what people voted. If the machine is not sure, put it aside and let people determine this manually.

This would both speed up the counting, make it easy to use and leave a paper trail and it give Diebold and other the opportunity to sell machines and thus the need to bribe senators and others.

    Everybody wins.

Because if their auto mechanic goes bankrupt/closes they can always find another one to take their cars to. If their IT service goes bankrupt/closes, you can find another provider, but the data you had is gone.

What would you do with the same data if you would have it on your own server? I assume you would take an incremential backup every 24 hours and if it is very important, even look for an off site solution.
Now the data is off site, so why not look for an on site backup solution to back up your data.

If backing up your data is not possible then you did not care for your data.

Email is one of the easiest examples. If you leave all of your email only on Google and never place it local, then you do not mind if it is gone. This is /., so I assume everybody knows the importance of backups. Do not blame somebody else for loosing your data if you don't backup.
