Fascist state censors Pirate Bay
We're quite used to fascist countries not allowing freedom of speech. A lot of smaller nations that have dictators decide to block our site since we can help spread information that could be harmful to the dictators.
This time it's Italy. They suffer from a really bad background as one of the IFPIs was formed in Italy during the fascist years and now they have a fascist leader in the country, Silvio Berlusconi. Berlusconi is also the most powerful person in Italian media owning a lot of companies that compete with The Pirate Bay and he would like to stay that way - so one of his lackeys, Giancarlo Mancusi, ordered a shutdown of our domain name and IP in Italy to make it hard to not support Berlusconis empire.
We have had fights previously in Italy, recently with our successful art installation where we had to storm Fortezza in order to get our art done. And as usual, we won. We will also win this time.
We have already changed IP for the website - that makes it work for half the ISPs again. And we want you all to inform your italian friends to switch their DNS to OpenDNS so they can bypass their ISPs filters. This will also let them bypass the other filters installed by the Italian government, as a bonus. And for the meanwhile - http://labaia.org works (La Baia means The Bay in Italian).
And please, everybody should also contact their ISP and tell them that this is not OK and that the ISPs should appeal. We don't want a censored internet! And the war starts here...
Indeed PEBCAK, because it is my fault that I have all these logins that I need to remember. Let me see? I have about 12 different logins that I was not allowed to select myself. Of those there are 6 that I can not change the password. These are just the ones I use at work and do not include the once that are not personal, but are group login and passwords. The other 6 I must change every month and to nt get mixed up, I use something easy to remember. And I have worked in worse places. One where I needed to change my password each week for certain access. So I started to write them down.
If that is PEBCAK, then so be it. It might just be my naive idea that if many people have an issue with e.g. a procedure, then it is not the people who need to change, but the procedure.
If you see that nobody can reach the peddles on his bycicle, don't ask for taller people, start making smaller bycicles.
If they only do it for the chalange, they could help you making your game safer and also then they would NOT distribute it.
They do it not just for the fun of it. They do it because they get a woody knowing people see their slash screen and that way they can pounce themself on the chest saying "I am THE man. I am THE man."
Perhaps they just don't give a damn about cycling and they might be smarter then the people I have seen in front of my house when I still lived in Antwerp, Belgium, when the Tour de France passed there. Setting up camp and car in the morning, waiting for the tour to pass. Shout for about 30 seconds as they pass. Pack up and go to the next place for the next day.
I know if I would be interested, I would watch it on TV.
So the fact that many people do NOT like it doesn't matter, as long as one individual (you) can use it as a convinience, it doesn't matter.
Also as you go and visit the house in person anyway, you should be buying the house same house anyway. The only thing you gain is visiting some other houses. That could mean you miss out on some other houses because of this. And that would mean you made an other houseowner unhappy, because you did not buy THAT house. Now if the neighbourhood was bad, you would not have bought it anyway.
So basicaly you give up your privicy for a few hours looking for a new house for a few hours. And yes, I like to call it privicy not having my picture taken each and every time I walk outside my house, no matter how legal it is. Just because it is not forbidden by law means you should be doing it.
The flexability of DNS and the downsides of DNS are changing. The thing is that up till now you could asume that the answer was correct in the majority of the time. In the HUGE majority of the time.
This caused the downsides to be minimal. The downsides where mostly due to people forgetting a training dot or mistyping an IP adress. Those are acceptable downsides when compared to the upsides of the fexbility.
However when the downsides become that you can not know wether or not you can trus the outcome, it then becomes a problem.
Think of people using a telephone. This has the upside of flexability. You can dial any number. The downside is that you can mistype a number or people change numbers. However in the majority you trust to get the person you intended to dial.
If, by malicious attempts, you have no idea where you are calling to anymore, then it becomes a problem. What if you dial, get connected to a paynumber for 5USD per minute who then puts you through to your intended person.
Would you still say 'hey, everybody knew there were downsides' or would you say that we need to chane it so that this never happens again?
OK, perhaps a bit to strong, what if any phonecompany could connect you to their system, without you even knowing it. Suddenly you pay more when you call. Yep, that has happend and the situation is changed now.
Unencrypted email is like a postcard. Encryped is like letters in envelopes. So why are people surprised if everybody read their postcards? Encrypting just takes out the content. It does not take out who the sender or reciever is however. And that can be used to extra investigation.
I am sure that when they find out I am mailing to and from Bin Laden, they will be looking closer. If I am however mailing with my lover and I am married, that would be something I might not want to be made public even if that in itself might not be illegal.
Now they go to the ISP to demand that data (normaly with a court order, but there are exceptions, like the USofA). This would mean they won't need a courtorder for that and can nicely lay out connections and networks and gather even more information then you want anybody to have.
The reason thay do not want to have you book by third party is that they want you to book on their website.
The reason for this (or so claims the CEO in a TV show I saw) is because the website generates income that exceeds the income of the air ticket. As an example he gave renting cars. People book via the website and will rent a car there as well. They get something for each car that is rented through their websites.
In other words, they are not so much in the business of selling plane tickes, they are in the business of cross and deep selling. Just look at their site and you see car hire and hotel bookings. And those are the people who give them money to be on their site.
That is the whole plan. First they tell you not to use faxes or internet connections to send over the information. Normaly you would delete secrets after you have send them, but not now.
Now you do not send them and bring them back on you HD where they can be confiscated at the US border.
Ooops, I was not allowed to tell this and now I have to go kill myself.
It only is a fist fight when somebody hits first. I have been in situations where I was almost forced to hit first. I have never done that. I always walked away often by saying something like 'You want to take this outside amd see who wins? Let's skip that and just say you win/ You win and I hope you are happy with your victory.'. Then I walk away with my head held high.
I was once hit in the face without any reason and without any warning. Looked around and saw that this was just another way of provoking. I did the same and declared him the winner.
To me that is a win/win situation. He wants to show he is the strongest. I do not want to be in a fight and want to show who is the smartest.
Do not forget that the walking away part is very importand and do it with pride. Because with the limited amount of braincells these idiots have, they still will somehow figure out that they actualy won a battle, but lost the war.
Have there been situations where this was not an option anymore? Yes, three times they dd not want to have it and still wanted to fight. Three times they were bigger then me and for them it looked like an easy win. Three times I kicked their butts with me being almost untouched and while they were lying on the floor I still declared him the winner and walked away.
Luckily this was many ears ago and I have not been in such a situation in a looooong time.
In Belgium it is only valid from a certain payment on. This will exclude most people and only iclude the CEO typeof people. What a lot of people also do not know in Belgium if that if it is valid, then this is not so much a bad thing.
e.g. if it states that you can not work for 12 months fr the competition, then it also must say what the punishment it. e.g. 24 months payment. However (and this is what many people forget) this is punishment for BOTH parties. So if you as an emplyee say: I can not start working for company X, you previous company has to pay out te money.
Obviously you are then 'forced' to work for a third company.
And again, it is null and void for most standard employees. Even if it is in the contract and you signed for it, the law will make it null and void and it might even mean that all other extra things in the contract become nul and void or just that one paragraph if that would be in favour of the individual.
This is about the same way Linus responded said when Microsoft talked about Linux and patents with vague allegations of a super-threat with absolutely no details provided.
Maybe the desktop is no longer the crucial front in the struggle to dominate home computing.
It hasn't been for may years. The thing that kept it back was pre-installation. Put Linux on pre-installed machines and people will use that.
People here will most likely complain that they can not put their distro on it, but the general public is not interested at all. All they want is to open the box and have a running system.
Pre-installation will also force hardware makers to have Linux hardware and drivers, which will be good for others as well.
Who would have thought such a thing? I thought that people who steal would make specific GUI's for them selves like you see in the movies and do all that other stuff.
OK, end the sarcasm. People who steal want to take a shortcut to the money. They want to have the money with the least possible effort. As the data they stole is not theirs and protecting them will take effort, why would they do it?
It is as if saying that you are surprised that if people rob your house they make a mess of it. Why would they not?
Seems to be working again.
I get the message that the video in the URL is no longer available. Happens almost all the time when linked from /. :-(
How about turning the music/movie off when a call comes in? Or just on hold.

Flat and round earthers can live together in harmony. The earth is both flat and round. Just like a pizza.
And more acurate then e.g. the GPS locator in your sig.

In other words, we have an opt-out for websites instead of an opt-in.
Then why do they have the locks?
That is why I watch FOX. At least they are objective.

Those are not friends. Those are at most drink-buddies. A friend will tell you if it sucks.
I was the first to mod it funny. What did I win?
All that these marathon men are asking is: Is it safe?
