First, yes, agree that there are some misleading facts in the article.
But let me correct you about the GDP.
India has largest pool of middle class citizens, and they are more than capable of buying this kind of stuff. This costs just same as TV, Refridgerator and these items are sold in tens of millions in one year. A motorbike costs almost 1000$ there, and Hero Honda, world's largest manufacturer of two wheelers, has sold above 2 million in one year2003-2004
The trouble is GDP reflects only part of the story.
Oh..yes.. I am.:-) I love my nation. And though I agree that u r right in criticising, I am trying to explain that, the best way a nation can make its citizen produce something great is to let them try.
A famous economist (dont remember) had adviced the prime minister a method to overcome slow economy. u know what was the advice - Ask half of them to dig and ask rest half to fill it back..:-D
I am sure building simputer is definitely better than digging and refiling..:-D
Oh.. which world u r from?:P India is not about just goat hearding....
India has built computers and sold them to entire world(including US). This is not a news and dont be surprised at that.
Looking at the potential of tapping on english speaking brilliant professionals, the IT industry in India has grown by leaps and bounds. The average growth rate above 50% over a period of 15 years is deinitely impressive
What the country is trying to do is - to bring the technology, awareness and its benefits to masses. India already has over 5 million computers. But out of reach of really poor people. Definitely, the failure of Simputer might look like failure to plan or failure of market research.... But many goals are already achieved.
May be phase II will bring some better news.... What's wrong in attempting...
Now more effort needs to be applied to the other direction - cutting off the spammer's payment stream.
ROFL....man which world u r from.
More than 60% spam i have received have been talking about fixin credit card, or fixin bad credit, auto loan and tons of finance related stuff. A big proof that they are funding spamming big way.
Hmmm.... agree that IBM screwed up OS2.... Also agree that IBM screwed up when time came to launch 386 (and Compaq jumped on the opportunity). Also...microchannel...also...
IBM did great job in 60's to 80's. The company could bring revenues (and thus loads of resources) to make sure the computing industry progresses by leaps.
Linux is not the taste of IBM marketing style. Linux has much to gain from IBM, but nothing in marketing, for sure.
Yes, but you have to look at their contribution to the computing world as well.
IBM is, for sure, one of the best organizations striving for excellent quality hardware and software . Their contribution comes through highly professional and research oriented team (unlike MS). They indeed have invented loads of things. Just google a bit and u get their achievemnets and contributions.
Calling IBM wolf is not correct because of the same reason. (I might have agreed if u use this for MS, who was trying to patent IPV6, some time ago).
Agree big way....
Novell was too lazy to adopt IP (faster than Windows... I hate that word Microsoft IP). Novell was too lazy to allow/integrate webservers, ftp servers, mail servers, database servers, opening up standards for applications, ERPs etc which started becoming business need.
In spite of hardcore fan of Novell in beginning 90's, I must say that I was forced ultimately to move to Linux, facing huge change resistance.
Novell, like Lotus, are good memories....:-) Got to move on....
In spite of revolution in this field, it can hardly be said that same idea can not be implemented in 20 different more ways. Imagine everything (like OOPS, J2EE, TCP/IP etc)patented... and whoop... we are still in jurassic age.
Yes. Share price IS relevant. For an investor it is question of profitability/ROI. The risk associated with an IT company getting into red is considered much higher than that of many other type of industries. (of coz, there are exceptions).
my $.02

Just an opinion guys.
No, it wont. There is enough proof that half of the earth will not be exposed to this burst.
