From being almost bankrupt they have, over the last half decade, built up a cash reserve of five billion dollars. They are also completely debt free. The interesting thing is that they achieved most of this before the massive success of the iPod. I would hardly call this a minor run-up in their fortunes.

As far as market share is concerned, they are doing very well in certain markets. Apple is still in a dominant position in professional graphics. They have also, over the last few years, gained a substantial foothold in the Video and Audio production markets some of the best software available on the market. You've got to be joking. MS is about as entrenched in Asia as it is in America. In Pakistan, MS is pretty much ubiquitous in home and corporate environments. The only difference is that in Pakistan, nobody pays for software. I really don't think that MS is going to accomplish much by pushing their inferior, budget, version of windows in these markets because everyone is already using XP pro. The only industry in Pakistan that is pretty much MS free is the ISP industry (Linux rules here). Apart from that, most people have never seen a non Windows operating system.

I remember I was once at a Mac exhibition here. You had people standing around looking at these computers in complete bewilderment. Part of that, of course, was that Apples industrial design is a step up from the usual crap Chinese hardware that people are used to. However, they were truly amazed that these machines weren't running windows. People were asking me if this operating system was made by Microsoft and, if not, then who makes it.

So anyway, its sad but true. MS really does have the entire world by its balls.

  17. Re:Excuse me? on The Cult of Mac · · Score: 1

Well, the sense of superiority among Mac users at times can be a bit much. However, some of your other concerns are nothing short of idiotic. For one, the concept of maximize doesn't exist in the Mac. So what you are interpreting as the Maximize button actually isn't the maximize button.

The reason Apple doesn't subscribe to the maximize concept is because it is basically illogical, and detrimental to productivity. For one, if you have a maximized window, you can't drag and drop objects and files between different windows and the desktop. Additionally, you can also not click on background windows to make them active. Apart from this Maximize windows make little sense. If you are working on a word document that only takes up half your screen, why would you want the window to take up the entire screen. When you work on your physical desk, do you insist on clearing the entire desk when you want to write on a little post-it note. I would imagine that you don't, and likewise Mac application windows only take up as much space as they need to. The rest of the space is there for you to be able to manipulate other objects on your desktop.

The plus button is actually a toggle that allows windows to switch between two states. The first state is the manufacturers default window size for the application. The second state is the state that you define. When you resize the window, this state becomes saved as your defined state. After this, you will be able to use the plus to switch between the applications default window size and your defines size. Now the interesting thing about this is that you can actually set your defined window size the cover the entire screen (by dragging the edge of the window to cover the whole screen). So in the future when you press the plus button, viola, you window will cover the whole screen. You can find a good explanation of the Mac way of doing this, and the disadvantages of Windows way here.

The aesthetics of the OS are a matter of personal preference. I happen to think that the Mac OS doesn't provide any iCandy that doesn't genuinely make the computing experience more enjoyable. Besides, most of it can be deactivated. So you can disable dock icon resizing, window genie effect, and even hide the dock. This will remove most of OS X's obvious iCandy.

Either way, OS X's os is certainly more tasteful that XP's fisher price theme. As far as Linux is concerned, it may be a great OS, but its hardly knows for its GUI. Most Linux GUI's are simply attempts at copying the Windows GUI. At least Mac OS X and Apple have their own design paradigm when it comes to GUI's. Like it or not, they have defined the most basic concepts of how a Graphical User Interface should work. There is a lot of history behind their UI, and there are strict Human Interface Guidelines that determine the logic for even the smallest elements in the OS X GUI.

So you asked, "Why in the world would anyone choose, willingly, to use an OS that refused to maximize a window when told to?Or that insisted on being "cute" at every opportunity, even when being so is distracting, unnecessary and reeks of an out of control case of eyecandyitis?"

Well, because the very concept of maximized windows is idiotic. However, if you do want to be an idiot OS X does give you a convenient way to Maximize. The cuteness can be deactivated in about 10 seconds, so if it bothers you, you don't need to see it.

    >> I believe those factors make it impossible to compete with Google in the short term, even if their hardware and code could be replicated for a few hundred million dollars (a more likely figure than $50M).

I, quite frankly, don't buy into any of this. I believe that Microsoft is currently the biggest threat to Googles search monopoly. Their intention has always been to control as much of the users internet experience as possible. I think MS missed the Internet boat with XP, and hence allowed a lot of brands to be established. However, with Longhorn, they are taking OS/internet integration to a new level.

Despite what Geeks would like to believe, MS has a lot of credibility with regular consumers. The MS search service is going to be pushed very aggressively in Longhorn. You'll most likely see a search bar integrated into the Longhorn desktop. If you see the Longhorn beta's, there is a large vertical bar on the right side of the screen, which gives the user access to a variety of local and remote services. Who wants to bet that an Internet+local file search bar will be a permanent resident on this bar.

With this level of integration, MS doesn't have to provide a much better serviced than Google. All they have to do is provide a service that doesn't suck, and Google will have major problems on their hands.

About six months ago I bought a 1.6 Ghz Pentium M laptop for my mother. The speed difference between the Pentium M and the Powerbook is huge. The Powerbook is simply MUCH faster than the Pentium M laptop in everyday use.

I was really under the impression that the new Pentium M chips are fast, but its performance was really quite poor compared to my powerbook. I haven't done any application benchmarking, but I can tell you for sure that the Powerbook feels much faster.

The G4 and Pentium certainly can't be compared clock for clock. You would get people equating a 1.5 G4 with anything between a 1.8-2.5 Ghz Pentium 4. All I can tell you is that the Powerbook feels very responsive, much more so than any Pentium M or Pentium 4 laptop I've used (I haven't yet used the psycho Alienware type laptops).

Thats funny, I have this HP bluetooth printer, and getting it to work has been a major pain in the ass on two different XP laptops. When I use the bluetooth detection wizard in OS X to setup the printer (default drivers), it just works.

The thing you have to remember about OS X is that things that are supposed to work with it always work, easily. A large number of the things that are supposed to work with Windows are a pain in the ass to set up.

All you have to do is make sure your device is compatible with OS X. With the very large number of printers, digital cameras, digital camcorders, phones, and PDAs that are compatible, that is usually a pretty trivial task. As least with OS X you know that if the thing is supposed to work, its usually just a matter of plugging it in. With Windows its still plug and pray.
