The *bard's* handbook? "Nobody plays this class, nitwit."
I take offense to your blatant bias against all of us bards. I've played my half-elven bard, Illiariariniara, for 12 years now and I must say it is the most fulfilling part of my life!! And I read the bard's handbook constantly to improve my understanding of my bard. She is currently level 26 and I hope that within a year she'll reach level 27. She can play a mean lute, let me tell you, and will charm the stink off a kobold! haha! Once you really get into character you'll better understand why the 2nd edition is so much better and why bards are so deep. They are the master of no trades but the jack of all but they get in all the sticky situations with the tavern wenches... I'll never forget the first time my bard had sex. So before you go jumping on people about how bards suck, you should try it for awhile and see if you like it!
And several years ago, an intel guy I knew who worked as one of the P6 designers said that the designers knew that IA64 wasn't going to fly, and that AMD would simply extend the regular x86 instructions to 64 bit and pick up some market share... and then years later it comes true. It is silly to be condencending to Intel - they have some very smart people, but they're a big company and there's plenty of politics involved.
That's totally what I'm saying! I used to play pac man all the time and now I'm totally not into that dorky video game stuff cuz I'm all chillin or partying at the club... its so great to take some X and then like BAM you like other people so much and you're so social and just haaaaaaaaaaave to touch... if that's what pac man did to me I mean turn me into a cool hip partygoing chico then so beit because its either that or become a sweaty overweight gross guy who won't stop complaining about how bad things are but man, you should just roll with me and then you'll see how good things are!
The reason they aren't networked to the internet is to make things cheap, not to make things super secure. Think of it, which is cheaper - implementing good security on an entire render farm, or just disconnecting it from the outside world? These things have to run on limited budgets, and every cent matters. If it is disconnected, you don't even have to worry about security patches for your software! The less work the better.
The LIBERAL media has been slowly forcing us to accept GAYS in the BIG GOVERNMENT and the UN because they want US to ALL become GAY, and then we'll all have to BECOME ATHEISTS and KILL UNBORN CHILDREN for the good of some THIRD WORLD TERRORIST!
How was that? I tried to get all the crazy conspiracy elements into teh smallest space possible... what did I leave out?
What the MMP medium has NOT had is the breakout hit that defines it.
From this guy's numbers, CoH has about 200k people playing it. World of warcraft had 500k in the public beta, and I would expect a whole lot more people to play the full game. 2x? 2.5x? 3x? Who knows. But from what I've seen so far, it does an amazing job of putting together things that already existed in MMO's but hadn't really been used correctly, and certainly not all at once. I think this is going to be the breakout title of MMO's. This isn't fanboy enthusiasm, I really think that Blizzard has a very polished and fun product on their hands, and they have a history of producing breakthrough titles - warcraft, starcraft, and diablo.
How is this getting rated insightful? This is either a troll or a moron.
First off, it isn't philanthropy because you can only be philanthropic towards humans.
Second, Bridgestone is doing this as a cool way to market themselves and maybe do something nice at the same time.
Third, by your argument you should sell your property, if any, stop eating nice food, stop using medical insurance, stop going on trips, stop buying new clothes, and stop using electricity. The amount of lives you could save with all of that money by far dwarfs your own - even if you die because you are homeless and malnourished, you're going to make it so that hundreds of children will live. So please, go follow your own advice and stop not saving children's lives by posting on slashdot. I figure every 10 posts is another dead baby at your feet.
This is pure apologism. I don't want to install steam before I have to because I don't play any of the games on it. I had already put money down for a pre-order when they told us about the online version. Should the retail version then be almost broken? For many people, this is pure lemon. If I bought a car, and then couldn't drive it out of the lot because there was no gas or oil in it, I would be pissed. Same here. Don't defend Valve just because you like their games so much - they screwed up, and screwed a lot of people in the process.
Honestly I have no idea what will solve your problem, I just know that's the problem I was having and I solved it by opening the ports in my router / firewall, and then restarting Steam and trying to play the game again. You could have completely different connectivity issues or maybe the servers are still borked, I dunno.:-(
Oh we're not in love with it at all. In fact, us hackers and geeks have quietly been scripting automatic posts to slashdot. The reasons we are doing this are two:
reason the first: we are practicing to beat the turing test, and feel that slashdot is full conversations that come close to beating the turing test, so this is good practice.
reason the second: we are lazy.
The current problem is that any story regarding iPods or iTMS creates a flood of posts about how much we love apple. This is being corrected but it will take some time to figure out the love apple / hate apple logic. I really shouldn't be telling you this because it is funny watching the few people who actually try to have conversations on slashdot, but I decided to give someone a hint to see if everyone else catches on or not.
For an example of an all script-generated conversation, look here. As you can see we've gotten quite good at using markov chains to produce seemlying meaningful responses without actually contributing everything. We have some troubles with grammar and spelling but that's alright because so do the people we're imitating. Anyway I hope someday you join in the fun!
Really me,

I think the required ports for steam have to be open whenever you want to play halflife 2. Unfortunately. You can likely cut down the number of ports you will need to keep open if you don't plan on playing online multiplayer, either server or client. Check the steam knowledgebase for the port listings.
Most of that unlocking time is the decryption and hard disk activity, not Steam network activity.
That is true, however it remains Valve's fault. The cd's basically just copy over the exact same files as in the preload that you could get from Steam... which means that when you stick the cd's in your drive you have to do two install processes, at least. First you have to disc swap install the cds (5) which takes awhile. Then you have to register for Steam. Then you have to wait while it decrypts everything, on top of unpacking the entire game just like a regular install does in a single step. The decryption and adding extra steps to the install process are quite a pain in the ass, let me tell you. It took me over an hour to get the game running, and I consider myself lucky because the only problems I had were closed ports, which I quickly fixed. Some of these other stories I've heard, especially with Steam registration, would absolutely enrage me if it had happened to me. We payed for this game, we expect it to at least PLAY!
Anthropocentric? What other viewpoint do you suggest, exactly? Should we think like trees? Or maybe we should think like martians! Or like cartoon characters... no wait, they're anthropocentric also. Or maybe we should do what lots of slashdot readers do - think like computers! Unfortunately they have no personality at all, and they have a tendency to build up huge stockpiles of grandma / grand-daughter / yak scat porn, but at least we won't be anthropocentric! And honestly, I think a lot of geeks would be happier living like that.
Most even say that that is what keeps them from giving it 100%s
They all give it 9.7/10 or 97% - oh what a steep punishment for completely disregarding a big portion of the game experience! Yes, CS:S is an ok substitute, but there is no reason they couldn't have made a deathmatch also. 100% is a perfect game. How can you say that a game has a truly engrossing storyline when your character has no control over it (or for that matter, any real interaction because YOU CAN'T TALK)? You're on rails the entire game, and the only way off is to die. The music could be better, the jumping puzzles are annoying. All of these things missing from the game only results in 3% reduction in total score? Please! Tell me that's not a bunch of crap. If I were reviewing it, it would get a 90%. That's because the gameplay in single player is very good and CS:S makes up for some of the multiplayer deficiency. I doubt I would review another FPS as 90% or above this year.
Am I the only one that is disgusted by the reviews of halflife 2? Yes, I've played the game and it is fantastic. But the reviews intentionally gloss over the shortcomings of the game (like the missing multiplayer version of the single player game!!!!) and drop praise on it like sprinkles on a sundae. The reviews say stupid shit like "you can almost see the pores on people's skins, and the life force behind their eyes if you use a little imagination" - IGN.
What happened to criticism? What happened to not being a whore for both Valve and the hordes of fanboys that just want to hear how good it is? I am very impressed with the game, but doesn't this sound like the game review rags are just telling people what they want to hear? That isn't review, that's trash.

Does anyone else find it funny that he put a lot of extra unnecessary commentary in parenthesis?
LOL way to correct someone and then spell plural's and cell's wrong! roofles!

Why would someone pay $3.50 for a coffee at Starbucks? Because of the experience.
And here I was thinking that people do it because they have shit for brains and wouldn't know good coffee if it burned their woo-hoo's off!

Well this is a spoiler so don't read on unless you want it to be ruined...
Ending: You win. Remember what happened at the end of HL1? Yeah, same thing here.
No, they used the physgun to snatch it from Gabe Newell's corpulent fingers, and then proceeded to strafe jump away!
lol I forgot to put "quotes" around random words.

No city that large has a cloaking device!
Thanks, now time to return to my fortress of dorkitude.

Or the other definition: Interpreting reality exclusively in terms of human values and experience. I defy you to have non-human values or experiences.
