I've seen a fair amount in the scored events, and the consistency if judging seems to be a crap shoot. How does someone fall off of a balance beam still score better than someone who stayed on the beam?

I think to anyone who watched the events, China's gold is definitely tainted.

Well, the girl in question scored the highest in the team uneven bars event. If her score is taken out, U.S. takes gold, Romania silver, and Russia bronze. In addition, she won the individual uneven bars event. Her disqualification pushes the U.S. up to gold, China to silver, and Great Britain to bronze.

These actions need to be taken, not so the U.S. can be moved up, but so the IOC is not regarded as a joke to the gymnastics community. I do not believe they will take any action until after everyone is out of China, and even then they will probably do what the FIG did to Paul Hamm and write a letter asking the Chinese girl to give up her medal on her own volition.

It's funny that you mention this, as I just upgraded to Hardy last week. Everything worked the first time, out of the box. I did an XP reinstall for a friend last night, and after two hours of an install, the network drivers don't work, the display drivers are the wrong ones, sound doesn't work, etc.

It's too bad my friend's grandson wants to play games, otherwise I'd be going Ubuntu all the way.

I had a similar problem recently when I upgraded to the Gutsy from Feisty. It took about four times of entering the correct display driver and restarting before it would allow me to get a higher resolution than 1024x768. Then, since I didn't care about rebuilding, I did a brand new install off of a Gutsy disc rather than upgrade. It worked flawlessly the first time with both the restricted drivers and the open source ones. Afterward, I upgraded to the Hardy beta and the display drivers kept.

I think that Ubuntu isn't quite the 'set it and forget it' OS that people want it to be, but I have far less problems with Ubuntu that the recent XP rebuild I did last night with no driver disc. Sure, the OS installed fine. But with no working NIC, I had to transfer the drivers back and forth on a USB flash drive.

Check the IRC channels for support- anything I haven't found in a forum has always been answered there.

I don't think the general U.S. public will ever completely go back to liking the French. There has always been disdain, but the non-joining-our-war was just an excuse to display it. The French annoy Americans, and Americans annoy the French. And if you want perspective about Texas, there are a few people I know that refer to the State of Texas as "The Country of Texas", touting (falsely, I might add) that the Texas state flag is the only flag that can be flown as high as the U.S. flag, since it was the only state that joined the union by treaty. Of course, to them, I'm a hippie from California only good for playing acoustic guitar and kicking around the hackey sack.

Not all Texans are rednecks, but some are. And odds are (to throw in my own misconceptions) if they were working the retail counter, they are not as educated as the business contacts the GP had. Thus, they were more readily accepting that French people are all worthless.

On a related note, my wife and I spent some time on our honeymoon talking to a lovely couple from London. They seemed to be pleasantly surprised to talk to people who were not only from the U.S., but the "redneck" state of Texas. Our world views were surprisingly similar, our family values were similar, and in general we were just two couples looking to live a happy life. In short, we were both semi-prejudiced about each others cultures. I just hope the GP forgave the negative Texans and their viewpoint and helped to give a positive perception of French people. This is a double-edged sword. Texans obviously shouldn't be so rude, but the GP should also not return their negativity, as it just further fuels the fire.

While I think you have the right idea, I think your pricing is a little off.

It would probably follow something more like this:
    $20 - base charge, 1GB transfer
    $5/GB - up to 19GB
    $4/GB - next 30GB
    Cut off after 50GB usage

I think this is why people are hesitant to move to a new pricing scheme. I mean, if they are screwing us (in the U.S., anyway) as it is, what about when they start using the utility-style pricing? In addition, they have to guarantee at least some connectivity (albeit not that great of a guarantee) with the current pricing. What about with utility-style? They could be down for longer periods of time with the excuse "well, you weren't using your connection at that time, so you don't pay".

In theory, utility-style is a good idea. But until they have to start acting like a utility (gov't oversight, profit caps, etc.) this can't be a good scheme.

Yeah, it's pure laziness to not fix the errors, but this still happens. In addition, I think some people are so used to auto spell checker just working or simply ignoring their mistakes because txtspk fails spell check anyway.

I honestly didn't see too much content there that was newsworthy (or new, for that matter). The reason I subscribed was because these were the magazines I saw on the desks of the older management... the policy creators. I would read the magazine on a Tuesday, and by the Friday meeting I would know what insane user or network policy was going to be put in place. If the magazine had an article on how fingerprint scanners were the only secure way to get on the network, one manager was insistent on the need for those on everyone's laptops and desktops (including our customers, since we were a consulting firm).

I think you are right, though- the merit for the job should not be solely based on experience or age. It should be based on the ability to do the job and do the job well. I just think that because someone is unable replace an AGP card does not mean they do not know how to design a good system for the end users (or for the people administrating the system).

On a similar personal note, my mother has been programming for the better of 25 years now. I do not think she would enjoy doing hardware support or tech support, but she can manage a coding project from start to finish better than people half her age that have more knowledge of the hardware her systems are going on. From what she's told me, the people that can't do their jobs are the ones that do not know how to ask the important questions to get the job done...

And while some of those people may not be in exactly the correct position, some of them are there (as you mentioned) because they can handle a project. They can't plug/unplug AGP cards, but they can make the system work well.
