could be integrated with some kind of desktop search software - supposedly Longhorn is going to be big on searching your stuff. I believe google were planning on getting into that.
possibly.
it still needs to be a lot clearer about a lot of things. so many differnt versions and GUI's. I want to use linux but I really don't know where to start. I've tried suse but none of my important hardware works. I won't use it until it's a lot more convenient to do so.
[If their PC had come with Linux instead of Windows, preconfigured so their Digi Camera works, their modem works, and their printer just works ]
I use windows. I update virus/firewall/win update regulalry (automated). never had a problem with viruses spyware etc. if what you said was true - I would probably use linux but linux doesn't work with ym hardware so - not interested.
[1. Based on the user's browsing habits, automatically bookmark the most frequently visited sites, and automatically put them into *multiple* categories (not just one category) to make them easy to find.]
all the sites i most frequently visit are already bookmarked - one of the first things I do.
[2. Create a full-text index in real-time of every page that has been browsed. When the user visits any web page, display a sidebar of "Related previously-viewed pages."]
how is this useful?
[3. A Google-News-like consolidation feature for the user's most-frequently visited news site, automatically highlighting stories of interest based on ones they've previously viewed.]
I fail to see why this is so good either. I use the BBC News web site. I browse the headlines. I read the ones I want to. Highliting them won't change the way I read news.
it's not cheap bullshit. Even if it was, if it works why does it matter if its cheap??!?!?
I'd happily use linux but i'm not chaning my hardware just to get it to work when everything works perfectly ok with windows.
Linux needs work. if you were really geeks surely you would now that.
Linux doesn't recognise my wireless card either... pretty shit really.
i thnk you should wait until linux and other free software is as widely-used as windows.
i think it's hardly fair to presume that linux has even been tested to to the same level as windows until it's installed on as many computers across the world. Thats very unlikely to happen very soon as linux is just not suitable for everyday desktop users (as i've discovered whilst trying a few versions of linux over the past week or so).
if linux was as widely used as windows I'm sure there'd be widespread security issues. there's always going to be someone looking for and exploiting holes.
unfortunatley this is a web site frequented by too many obsessive nerds. not that I'm a fan of microsoft in anyway at all. I just think it's a little short-sighted to presume that linux is like fort-knox just because nobody has made any big effort to break it.
phone networks in the UK don't like bluetooth because it means you can get the pictures off your camera phone easily without having to send them via MMS.
yeah i still use hotmail in outlook express. find it very useful. can move all my mail onto my hard disk (whihc was cool when hotmail was only 2mb).
i still use my hotmail address to sign up for stuff. gmail is where it's at tho.
"Sorry, links to Bugzilla from Slashdot are disabled"
that is really annoying.
on another topic, does anyone else think firefox takes quite a long time to start-up (on windows this is, 2.8ghz, 512mb)
perhaps they just don't want to side with mozilla entirley.
you shouldn't expect them to just endorse mozilla because it's your favourite and it's the IE alternative.
I'm glad they don't take sides.

another slashdot linux v windows war.
i like and regularly visit slashdot. but i by far prefer windows.
is anyone else like me?
if you were a true geek you would have known. get the hell off slashdot.
great, another smartass. just what slashdot needs.
who's gonna fly it whilst he's doing this?
perhaps he could set the wi-fi link up so he can remote control his plane.

i tried suse the other week. modem and wireless card don't work with linux. not buying new ones. back to windows for me.

Sorry, no results were found containing "gmail"
eh?
The Mole. I believe that was Pod 6 on Thunderbird 2.
am I missing something or does everyone else have to reinstall things like flash etc whenever they update Firefox.
sorry if plugins are regarded with the same contempt as IE by slashdotters...

sarcasm. i have apache running on windows right here.
read my post again. i never mentioned IIS and apache.
yeah and apache doesn't work on windows either..... oh... shit.
i'd send an email from suse. if there were any drivers for my modem.....
