I never understood that. A company can pull your credit without your SS#. I used to work in the mortgage industry. We just needed a name and an address to get a credit report. A SS# helped, but it wasn't necessary.

Granted I've never been to California, but I grew up in South Florida and live in Chicago. There are tons of well built, brand new condos and single-family homes in the $250,000 range.

Additionally, if you'd like to build a house construction loan programs today are pretty generous. You might be surprised.

I think you may have a point, but it's indicative of a larger problem with math education. In college I did NOT major in computer science (which I regret) because in my freshman year the math requirement seemed too difficult. After 3 years I graduated with a major in Economics and an accidental minor in Math. My interest in Econ led me to higher math.
You pointed out your C in math. I think a C is better than not being exposed to the concepts at all.

A lot of kids are scared off by math, but if any student follows what they're interested in (econ, psych, cs, art?) they'll find higher math education to be an invaluable asset. Math enriches all fields. Who knows where the fear of math starts or how to fix it? I fell victim to it.
