  2. Re:Weird... on Israeli Army Frowns on D&D · · Score: 1

The Israeli army tends to know how to assign people to jobs they'd be good at.

So what's the army's problem then? All they have to do is assign D&D players as executioners. It stands to reason that anyone who goes out and plays with a sword as a hobby will probably become pretty good at wielding it.

    From TFA:
The game focuses on the results of decisions made by the players as determined by the roll of the dice. In a more "active" version of the game, players leave the table and go out, dressed as the characters they assume for the game

In the beginning, there was D&D. Then came AD&D. The roots of the game are entirely dice- and paper-oriented. (Plus they have those cute little miniatures, which make great projectiles when you're mad at someone.)

Personally, I'd rather spend $12.99 on a CD I can play anywhere I take it than spend 75 cents on songs that are DRM'd and can only be played on my computer or iPod.

But that's just my 2 cents -- there ya go, and don't blow it all on music, ok? ;)

The remaining functionality is called "fundamentals". Here's a link to an episode of The .NET Show that has a discussion of these "fundamentals". From the link:
Longhorn "Fundamentals" is an important part of what we feel is part of the core experience of Longhorn. It includes User Experience, System Security, Application Deployment, System Manageability, as well as many other features and capabilities.
Sounds perfectly nondescript to me, simply some buzzwords thrown together to give the impression of state-of-the-art design. Of course, I haven't watched the "show".

Speaking as a Windows user, that's a damn good plan. My first taste of Linux was a Slackware CD that I was given by a professor. Leaving aside the problem of not being able to mount the floppy drive, what I saw of the GUI and the workings of the OS left me with a positive impression.

This isn't to say that the average home user will be able to jump in and immediately feel right at home. However, given an appropriate flavor of Linux, the learning curve for a switch is likely not very steep.

Maybe a subscription fee for the entire season?

That's not a bad idea. They already do that with some sports, i.e. basketball.

OTOH, personally I can't see myself subscribing to such a thing. Any shows I'd want to keep I'd get on DVD. For example, I'm a big M*A*S*H fan. For $30 or so a season, I get 24 episodes. That's only $1.25 a show, well worth it in my opinion even if there are no special features. Actually, I do like the audio option of playing the show without the laugh track. I don't need canned laughter to tell me someone said or did something funny.

Then there are shows that cost somewhat more, such as CSI. I get it for around $60 a season at Sam's Club. I completely understand the greater cost as it's an hour-long show rather than a half-hour show, and there are special features included as well. No problem for me there.

If there are single episodes of something that I want to keep but don't want to purchase an entire season, I'll just tape them. Same goes with special shows and one-offs. At some point in the future, I may end up purchasing them on DVD (especially if the price is sufficiently low), but at least I've got a copy I can watch when I want.

I guess that depends on how "sufficient" is defined. Sufficient for having a roof over one's head, food in one's belly, and the other basic necessities of life, in addition to some luxuries, sure. But sufficient for mansions on the California coast with gold-plated toilet seats and crystal dinnerware for their dogs, no -- they need more money.
