  1. Re:Microsoft linkage on OSI vs SCO · · Score: 2, Interesting

I suspect that their is more here than meets the eye in terms of collusion between MS and SCO. I could see MS picking up SCO if they can damage Linux in the process.

It's interesting that in the month leading up to this I've seen a couple quotes from Microsoft representatives stating that they would be creating a version of their OS that doesn't require the Windows GUI. This is a big step towards Windows becoming more like Unix. Perhaps this is related somehow?

It would make sense that the best way for Windows to compete with Linux is to become more like Linux. At least in the areas where Linux is clobbering MS. It's just the timing that makes me wonder if these things are related.

Second, where do I get an N-connector? Does Radio Shack sell them? The only place I checked was Radio Shack and of course no one there knew what I was talking about. Sorry, but I'm pretty skeptical about your story. Mostly because that type of usability test would be a complete waste of time and money since it completely ignores major factors.

For one thing, I haven't met a Linux (or *BSD) admin that wasn't proficient with Windows as well. By proficient, I don't necessarily mean a proficient Windows admin, but proficient in using Windows.

Now, take your average "Windows Server Administrator"--most have no experience with other operating systems. For the most part, novice MCSA's are one-trick ponies that only know how to do things within their niche.

It's easy to see why a Linux admin would perform better in a Windows environment than an MS admin would in any non-Windows evironment.

The first time I set up DHCP in Linux it took me about 20 minutes including download and compile time. I could probably do it in less than 10 minutes now that I've already done it a couple times.

I've never set up a DHCP server in Windows, but I have needed to make configuration changes to one that was already set up. I can see why you chose MS DHCP for your example. It's pretty intuitive to use, and would be pretty easy for anyone to use that understands DHCP.

Still, having used both, I much prefer the Linux configuration. In Windows, you have the little tree on the left with expandable branches and the objects on the right. It only takes 4 or 5 clicks to get just about anywhere. In Linux it's a single text file with comments and examples interspersed. If you know how to use a text editor it's pretty simple. In fact, it's easier than clicking around a bunch of eye candy, just not as sexy looking. But it's a DHCP server so who cares if it looks sexy?

Your last line is completely ridiculous. It's not going to take any Linux admin 10 hours to set up DHCP. Get a grip.

The original Lord of the Rings. OK, maybe it was cheesy but my dad took me to see it when I was quite young and it means a lot to me. It was the first gory movie I ever saw. Taking your child to see a gory movie is probably not a good idea unless the gore is pink. This was the perfect movie to help me get adjusted to gore in movies (I still get queasy whenever I see blood though.)

Another significant movie in my life was Wargames. This is too obvious for me to comment further on it...except that I know if my computer had I spark plug I'd have pissed on it many times by now. This movie made me buy my first 300 baud modem.

Pump Up the Volume. Yeah, it was a teen movie and all that, but it really had an effect on me. Once I saw it I couldn't stop thinking of starting a pirate radio station for a long time. Actually, I still think about it. This movie is a good part of the reason "Radio" is part of my nick now that I think about it.

The Heathers. "What's your damage?" "You repay me in puke?" "Fuck me gently with a chainsaw." I guess I was probably a late bloomer, but this movie was the one that taught me an appreciation for dark comedies.

I know I'm leaving out many movies, but these were the first that came to mind.
