Since the State of Georgia put in Diebold machines *everywhere* after the 2000 debacle, the stickers they handed out to voters had a smiling Diebold-machine-with-arms-and-legs-shaped cartoon captioned with "I Voted - Georgia Counts". Today, however, they reverted to the old "I'm a Georgia Voter"-on-top-of-a-peach stickers. Is this because they're embarrased they blew our money on insecure technology? I so wanted one of those "Georgia Counts" stickers too -- I was planning to Photoshop it into Mr. Diebold Machine throwing a ballot into the trash!

Most IT managers create their own hell by failing to set appropriate boundaries with their customers. They tend to get into the position by kissing ass, and wonder why people yell at them so much after they didn't manage anyone's expectations.

It's even worse in consulting shops because there's also salesmanship involved. I quit my last gig after the management's need to please got me painted into a horribly unethical corner.

  16. Could improve OCR of handwriting on 3D Holograms Detect Fake Signatures · · Score: 2, Interesting

Most modern handwriting recognition techniques, such as on my Tablet PC, rely on knowing the order and direction of writing strokes to improve their accuracy. It looks like the techniques described by TFA's sources would provide similar information and might enable machines to finally transcribe handwritten papers reliably.

  18. Americans miss an important point on NTSB Recommends Black Boxes For All Cars · · Score: 1, Insightful
This would be so much less of an issue if not for the fact that General Motors et al have succeeded in convincing Americans to build a society where an automobile is a necessity - i.e., the majority of good jobs are in suburban office parks, and the majority of affordable housing is in sprawling suburbia. The distances are too long to walk and the density of people is so low that any kind of public transit is inefficient, inconvenient, a losing proposition and basically ends up as a dry bone thrown to the poor.

This is why most Americans feel that driving needs to be a right instead of a privilege.
