Well, Adobe claims that PageMaker 5.0a (which you mentioned in another post) should work under Win95, although they do not guarantee it. There are also a number of support documents on their technical support web site which will tell you how to solve individual problems.
I don't think it's Adobe's responsibility to make its product work in the next generation OS, if the OS maker claims full backward compatibility.
Most Win 3.1 applications *DO* work in Win95. Even Office 4.x apps. It's a myth that you can't run Win 3.1 apps in Win95 or that you HAVE to upgrade them. These myths are typically propagated by people that *WANT* to upgrade their apps, but need an excuse to make the management pay for it.
With me, this not the case. Actually, the pm5a runs under w95, but practically its unusable, due to the changed behaviour of the mouse buttons. It somehoz cant tell the difference between the single and double click. We couldn't resolve this problem, altrough we tried very hard, and we are beginners or ignorants in this field.:-)
Well, I was talking about our PageMaker 5.0a what we used to produce the university newspaper. To get the money to buy this was a major pain. We used it for years. Then w95 come along, and people said its better and more stable. We could use that feature:-), so gave it a try. Well, didn't work. Gave nt workstation a try. No luck either. We couldn't get the money to buy the new vesion of PM, so we are to stay where we was.
Consumers only want to buy an upgrade if it contains new features. But they also want backwards compatibility. Hence, bloat.
True. Now please tell me, in reality, why can't I run my win3.1 applications on w95? They _claim_ to have backward compatibility, but they don't really have it. So I'm forced to upgrade the apps as well. Sheees:-(
Please don't try to tell me that you honestly think sex was intended for pleasure (that just happens to be a wonderful side effect:).
Of course it is intended to be pleasure (intended by who? I have to think you believe in a god), or else nobody would do it! It's just a simple fact of evolution! So when the humans reached a level of intelligence, connecting the sex with the babys, they also began to control it. See the bible, Onan for example! Szo
So are the American. And the Serbian. As a matter of fact, I don't like my very own Hungarian goverment either. So what? I don't hate americans just because they have bloody stupid, agressive and ignorant goverment. You shouldn't punish people for they goverment!
I've tried that before but I get an error "execve failed for/etc/X11/X, errno 13" when I "startx".
I didn't encounter this problem. Try starting with xinit 2>&1 >log, and read the log file carefully, maybe it can help. You created the/dev/fb* devices?
But during the startup of my machine, I can see the cute little penguin icon (using VGA=773 i think, 256 colors at 1024x768). Thats good, it means you got the framebuffer working.

Come on, linking and packaging not that hard. I think its much better solution than every ISV picks it's random format and library and for example makes it impossible to use civ and wp on the same machine. It is not as hard as making a gtk and a qt version. They could include all the versions on one CD.

And which liblaries will be linked to it. I think we should start a campaign to convince the companies producing commercial software for linux to use and support the linux's package formats (all of them), and produce at least two (libc5 and libc6) versions of their product. I mean it is insane that they put a whole lot of work to create a software and don't bother to spend one more day to compile it against two libcs and to package it in rpm and deb and so on. There were counterexamples (SO, wp8, oracle etc.) and it was really annoying. Let's make those companies to play the linux game by the rules of the community!
The sucky part is only that Debian CD's don't include some very useful packages due to licensing. Like a browser that supports WWW proxies a la Netscape. I kinda got locked on my system after my network worked but I could only access the web through Netscape. So i had to download Netscape onto the linux box through a windows machine.
FYI: lynx can use proxies, as well as wget; dpkg and dselect is really good, put apt-get, or dselect with apt method is the best package management system ever. Szo
Just an example: try to untar the qt source on NT.
